Jermaine O'Neal scores 25 points and Quentin Richardson adds 23 as the Heat defeat the Bulls. Heat jump into 7th in East, hand Bulls 7th straight loss By Chris Perkins, for NBA.com Posted Saturday March 13, 2010 12:00AM MIAMI (NBA.com exclusive) -- You figured it would eventually get ugly between the Miami and Chicago, two teams with a bitter playoff history in recent years. Things did get a bit ugly with about five minutes left in the Heat's 108-95 victory on Friday. In the span of about three minutes of real time (no time ticked off the game clock), Bulls center Brad Miller picked up a flagrant foul and a technical foul, and guard Kirk Hinrich got two technical fouls and an automatic ejection. The posturing didn't end until about 30 minutes after the game when Heat superstar Dwyane Wade said Miller needs to "stop crying." It was just another chapter in the colorful history between the Heat and Bulls, a rivalry that got going in 2006 and 2007 with two contentious playoff meetings that included hard playoff fouls, ejections and a few stare-downs. Since then there have been plenty of incidents, including a 2007 episode in which Hinrich, a known Wade tormentor, allegedly grabbed Wade's wrist and injured him, causing Wade to miss four games. "It wasn't a pretty game all the way through," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said, "but at least we're learning how to grind out some of these games and come away with the most important thing, and that's the win." There wasn't much ...

CHICAGO(AP) Another playoff thriller between Chicago and Boston, and this one went to the Bulls. If the Celtics want to advance, they're going to have to earn it. Ben Gordon scored 22 points, hitting the tying 3-pointer in the first overtime, and the Bulls beat the defending champions 121-118 in double overtime Sunday to tie their first-round series at two games apiece. The teams split two tight games in Boston, before the Celtics blew out the Bulls in Game 3. This time, they stretched the drama into a second overtime. "Everybody I'm talking to is saying this is the most exciting series that they're watching right now,'' Gordon said. It's tough to argue. Derrick Rose added 23 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists. John Salmons scored 20 points after a slow start, hitting four free throws in the final 26 seconds of the game and blocking Paul Pierce's tying 3-pointer. Boston's Ray Allen buried a 3-pointer with 9.8 seconds left in regulation to tie it at 96 before Rose missed a potential winning fadeaway in the closing seconds. Gordon came through with 4.5 seconds left in the first overtime, hitting a 3-pointer over Pierce to tie it at 110, and the Bulls never trailed in the second OT. Salmons hit two free throws with 26 seconds left and, after a 3-pointer by Pierce, he hit two more at the line. After a timeout, Pierce got the ball on the left side but couldn't shake Salmons, who deflected his 3-pointer. It was a dramatic end to another dramatic game. The series goes back to ...
LOS ANGELES(AP) The Los Angeles Lakers letting the Utah Jazz shave a 22-point lead all the way down to six wasn't quite as cool. Bryant and the Lakers are moving on in the NBA playoffs - as if that was really in doubt. It's just that even as they ran away from the Jazz 107-96 on Monday night, they still left some questions about their defense. With Bryant scoring 31 points and Lamar Odom adding 26 points and 15 rebounds, the Lakers finished the opening-round series in five games to earn a few days rest. They move on to play the winner of the Portland-Houston series. The partying fans at Staples Arena - and the Lakers - were slapped back to reality as the Jazz came back in the closing minutes, cutting the lead to 93-86 with 4:37 left. Bryant hit a turnaround jumper and Odom finished a fast break with a slam dunk to fend off Utah's late run. "We've got to give a better effort defensively when our second unit comes in there, getting back on defense, not giving up easy baskets, stuff like that,'' Bryant said. "We've got a week here before the next series to have a spirited conversation with the group and see if we can't correct that for the next series.'' The Lakers didn't want to have to go back to Salt Lake City, the site of their Game 3 collapse - when they blew a 13-point, third-quarter lead - and their Game 4 bounceback. Bryant doesn't care who the Lakers play next. "I'm just ready for the next series, whoever it is,'' he said. "We have to kind of go over it and evaluate ...
NEW ORLEANS(AP) In a relieved New Orleans locker room, Chris Paul and James Posey chatted about all the hard fouls, all the flying bodies that more than anything defined the Hornets' first win of this postseason. "This is the fun part of the playoffs, all the contact, all the flagrant fouls,'' Paul said. "You never want anyone to get hurt, but after it's all said and done, you smile about it because that's the nature of the sport.'' Playing a grueling 46 minutes and shaking off a hard foul committed against him, Paul had 32 points and 12 assists, helping New Orleans hold on for a 95-93 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Saturday in Game 3 of their first-round series. The Hornets cut Denver's lead in the series to 2-1, with Game 4 on Monday night. Posey, who sprained his right knee in the first quarter but returned before halftime, had 13 points and nine rebounds, none more important than his last, which came after Carmelo Anthony's jumper for the lead bounced out with under 5 seconds left. Posey also played the last 4:39 with five fouls. "I wanted to finish out the game, just be smart about it,'' Posey said. "The fouls I did commit, I felt were needed at the time - nothing easy, make them earn it at the free throw line.'' The game was loaded with hard fouls; there were 58 personal fouls called in all, 29 on each team. Two players on each team fouled out - David West and Tyson Chandler for New Orleans, and Nene and Kenyon Martin for Denver. Chandler, Posey and Denver's ...
MIAMI(AP) Dwyane Wade swished a 3-pointer, then turned and shook his hand like it was burning. Yep, Wade and the Miami Heat are that hot right now. Wade finished with 29 points and eight assists, Jermaine O'Neal added 22 points and 10 rebounds, and the Heat extended Atlanta's decade-plus road playoff drought, beating the Hawks 107-78 Saturday night in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference first-round matchup. It was over early: Atlanta missed 17 of its first 19 shots, and a 25-6 Heat run to end the first half pushed the lead to 50-29. "We knew there would be a lot of energy in the building, so we played off that early,'' Wade said. "And defensively we came out very tough.'' Josh Smith, Al Horford and Mike Bibby scored 13 apiece for Atlanta, which is 0-12 in road playoff games since May 8, 1997, losing all but one by at least 10 points. The Heat lead the series 2-1 and host Game 4 Monday night. "No more excuses,'' Horford said. "We're going to have to bring it fuego on Monday.'' When teams split the first two games of an NBA series, the Game 3 winner advances 76 percent of the time. And in recent years, the edge has been even more pronounced - of the last 27 series that were tied at 1-1, the Game 3 winner ultimately prevailed on 22 occasions. That's a bad sign for the Hawks. "By any means, we're not out of it,'' Hawks coach Mike Woodson said. "But we can't come out and give effort like we did tonight. I just thought the Heat did everything that they were supposed to do and we ...
SALT LAKE CITY(AP) It took Kobe Bryant only a few minutes to end his shooting slump. Bryant scored Los Angeles' first 11 points and once his teammates joined in, the Lakers overwhelmed the Jazz 108-94 on Saturday night and moved within one game of advancing to the second round. "It was important for me to come out and be a little more assertive,'' said Bryant, who scored 38 two nights after one of his worst shooting games in years. Bryant scored 38 points and added only 1 assist but when you win a playoff game, who cares? Kobe was coming off a 5-for-24 night Thursday in the Lakers' only loss of the series. "We never could get close enough to guard him,'' Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "I think he put everyone on his back and got them off to the way they wanted to play.'' He scored in double figures in each of the first three quarters and more than doubled his scoring from Game 4. "Coming off that semi-bad performance - that horrible performance I had in that last game,'' Bryant said with a grin, "it feels good to respond with a game like this.'' Lamar Odom had 10 points and 15 rebounds and Pau Gasol added 13 points for the Lakers, who host Game 5 on Monday night. tags: Eastern Conference Cleveland Cavaliers (cavs) vs. Detroit Pistons Boston Celtics vs. Chicago Bulls Orlando Magic vs. Philadelphia 76ers (sixers) Atlanta Hawks vs. Miami Heat Western Conference: Los Angeles Lakers (LA) vs Utah Jazz Denver Nuggets vs. New Orleans Hornets San Antonio Spurs vs. Dallas Mavs ...
CHICAGO -- Willing to defer in the first two games, Paul Pierce took the initiative and the Boston Celtics seized control. Pierce scored 24 points, Rajon Rondo added 20 and the defending champions beat the Chicago Bulls 107-86 on Thursday night to take a 2-1 lead in their first-round playoff series. Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls struggled and look to bounce back in game 4. tags: Eastern Conference Cleveland Cavaliers (cavs) vs. Detroit Pistons Boston Celtics vs. Chicago Bulls Orlando Magic vs. Philadelphia 76ers (sixers) Atlanta Hawks vs. Miami Heat Western Conference: Los Angeles Lakers (LA) vs Utah Jazz Denver Nuggets vs. New Orleans Hornets San Antonio Spurs vs. Dallas Mavs (mavericks) Portland Trailblazers (blazers) vs. Houston Rockets game 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
LOS ANGELES(AP) The Utah Jazz played better and it still didn't matter. Kobe Bryant scored 26 points, Pau Gasol added 22 and Lamar Odom had 19 off the bench in the Lakers' 119-109 victory over the Jazz on Tuesday night, giving Los Angeles a 2-0 lead in the best-of-7 first-round Western Conference playoff series. "We're not thinking about it being over at all,'' Bryant said. "We're thinking about Game 3.'' The Lakers' Phil Jackson notched his 195th career postseason victory, the most of any coach in NBA history. "It was an offensive display, not always great ballhandling, but a lot of scoring,'' he said. "That was a trial out there and they threw some new things at us.'' But the Lakers handled the Jazz like they always have at Staples Center, sending Utah to its 11th consecutive loss, including playoff games. Deron Williams scored a career playoff-high 35 points and Carlos Boozer had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Jazz, who head home for Game 3 on Thursday. They again played without injured center Mehmet Okur. "We played a lot better in Game 2 than we did in Game 1. We still got down by a lot early but we were able to fight back,'' Boozer said. "We had chances to win it in the fourth quarter. They just made plays.'' The Lakers' shooting sizzled in the opening quarter, but they found themselves in a tight battle throughout much of the second half. "It's Deron Williams being a bad boy,'' Bryant said. "He kept them in the game and made plays.'' The Lakers stretched their ...
ATLANTA(AP) Dwyane Wade didn't call "bank.'' No need. This was the playoffs, not HORSE. With 13 straight points to close the first half and an unlikely 3-pointer off the backboard in the waning minutes, Wade showed it's hard to keep him down two games in a row. He scored 33 points in all, leading the Miami Heat to a 108-93 victory over the Atlanta Hawks that evened their playoff series at one game apiece Wednesday night. "This is where amazing happens,'' Wade said. Amazing, indeed. Remember how bad Wade and his Miami teammates looked in a 90-64 loss to open the playoffs? They were that good in Game 2. Wade already had more points by halftime than he had in Game 1, when he was held to 19 points and turned it over eight times. Only once during the regular season was he held to less that 20 points in consecutive games, and he wasn't about to do it again in the playoffs. This was vintage D-Wade - 6-of-10 from 3-point range, 11-of-20 overall, five rebounds, seven assists, two blocked shots and a steal. Wade was locked in for this one, and the Hawks didn't stand a chance. "He set the tone,'' Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said. "Before I came out to talk to the team, right before the game, there was some joking and laughing in the locker room and I heard him tell everybody to shut up and get their minds on the game.'' After trailing by as many as 18, the Hawks twice closed within five points in the fourth quarter - but never got over the hump. Wade delivered the decisive blow when ...
BOSTON(AP) Ray Allen landed the final blow in a memorable duel with Ben Gordon on Monday night, shooting the Boston Celtics back into their first-round series. Allen made a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 2 seconds left and finished with 30 points, leading the Celtics a 118-115 win over the Chicago Bulls. Gordon nearly carried Chicago to a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series. He scored with 12.3 seconds left to tie it, the final hoop of his playoff career-high 42 points. Then Boston set up a play for Allen, who took a pass from Rajon Rondo and connected from the right side. Allen scored 28 points after getting some advice from coach Doc Rivers at halftime. "Doc said going into the half, 'Be aggressive, but let it come to you,''' Allen said. "I never think I'm not in my rhythm. It can be a grind as a shooter. As a scorer you're always trying to find something.'' Allen and Gordon each had several clutch baskets in the second half as the former University of Connecticut guards battled for control of the game. After Tyrus Thomas missed a shot from midcourt as time expired, Allen headed for his bench where injured Kevin Garnett delivered a couple of congratulatory slaps - to his head and chest. Allen said he doesn't like "being made a fuss over.'' But that was unavoidable after he broke out of his shooting slump. He scored just four points on 1-for-12 shooting and missed the final shot in Chicago's 105-103 overtime win Saturday. "It felt like we were at UConn in the summertime ...
LOS ANGELES (AP) Pardon Phil Jackson's lack of enthusiasm for how the Los Angeles Lakers played in the second half. They piled up 62 points on Utah in the first half, then got outscored over the final 24 minutes. "It wasn't a coach's delight, that's for sure,'' he said. But his players sure liked the outcome, a 113-100 victory over the Jazz in the teams' playoff opener Sunday. Kobe Bryant scored 24 points, Trevor Ariza added 21 and Pau Gasol 20 as the Lakers pretty much had their way against the eighth-seeded Jazz. They led by 22 points at halftime and then answered resoundingly both times Utah got within nine in the second half. "They kept knocking on the door and we just never let them in,'' Bryant said. Allowing a Phil Jackson-coached team to win Game 1 of any series doesn't bode well for the opposition. Jackson's teams have never lost a playoff series after winning Game 1, going 41-for-41 with Chicago and the Lakers. "We had a very difficult time,'' Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "We gave up 62 points in the first half and it's virtually impossible to beat this team giving them an edge.'' Carlos Boozer led the Jazz with 27 points and Deron Williams added 16 points and a career playoff-high 17 assists. Both were in foul trouble, with Boozer getting his third just before halftime when Williams already had two. "I didn't shoot the ball too well,'' Williams said. "I did a good job getting in the lane and distributing the basketball, I just couldn't finish.'' The Jazz sorely ...
BOSTON(AP) Derrick Rose had a playoff debut like few others and led the Chicago Bulls to a victory over the Boston Celtics in the playoffs. Not even Michael Jordan did that. Rose matched Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's record with 36 points in his playoff debut, adding 11 assists to lead the Bulls to a 105-103 overtime victory over the defending NBA champions in Game 1 of their best-of-seven first-round series. Playoff experience? "He doesn't need it,'' Bulls guard Ben Gordon said. "He's poised beyond his years. He already carries himself like a veteran out there. He had a phenomenal game tonight, to say the least.'' Game 2 is Monday, the anniversary of the 1986 playoff game when Jordan scored 63 points against Boston - in a Bulls loss. In fact, Chicago had not beaten the Celtics in 10 postseason games since the Chicago Stags beat Boston in the 1948 Basketball Association of America quarterfinals. "I hope this is a wake-up call,'' said Paul Pierce, who scored 23 points. "I hope we realize that the Bulls, they're not just a team that's happy to be in the playoffs. So hopefully the guys will wake up and realize this is reality. We've better come to play.'' Tyrus Thomas scored 16 points - making six of Chicago's eight points in overtime, including the game-winning jumper with 51 seconds left in overtime. Joakim Noah, who was also making his postseason debut, scored 11 with 17 rebounds for the Bulls as they wrested the home-court advantage from Boston. "As the games go on, the moments ...
THE LEGEND
Jason Kidd has forged a reputation as one of the NBA's premier passers during his 14 seasons. The Dallas point guard has the numbers to prove it. Kidd handed out 15 assists to become the fourth player in NBA history with 10000 for his career, Dirk Nowitzki added 24 points and 10 rebounds, and the Mavericks beat the Toronto Raptors 109-98 on Sunday night. Kidd reached the milestone with 1:04 left in the third quarter with his 13th assist of the night, passing to Brandon Bass for a 10-foot turnaround. Kidd received a standing ovation when the feat was announced to the sellout crowd. ``It means a lot of my teammates put the ball in the basket over the years,'' Kidd said. ``It's nothing I ever thought I'd accomplish when I started out.'' He trails John Stockton (15806), Mark Jackson (10334) and Magic Johnson (10141) on the NBA career list. In the final minute of the third quarter, Kidd registered his 14th assist when he passed to Jason Terry for a three-pointer that gave Dallas a 90-75 advantage. Dallas went on to lead by as many as 18 in the final quarter and won its third straight. ``It's nice to be a part of it,'' Nowitzki said of Kidd's big night. Josh Howard contributed 16 points and Antoine Wright added 15 for Dallas. James Singleton had a career-high 16 rebounds and scored 12 points. Former Dallas high school star Chris Bosh paced the Raptors with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Andrea Bargnani added 18 points for Toronto. The Raptors were unable to get closer than 10 in ...

Whether it's getting blown out early or faltering in the fourth quarter, the Chicago Bulls keep finding ways to lose. Chris Bosh had 16 points and 13 rebounds, rookie Jamario Moon matched his career-high with 15 points and the Toronto Raptors pulled away in the fourth to beat Chicago 93-78 Sunday, handing the Bulls their fourth straight loss. "There's no fun in moral victories,'' said a downcast Kirk Hinrich. "I feel like we played better but we lost the game and we struggled down the stretch again.'' The energetic Moon added nine rebounds, six blocks and three steals. "He gave us a lot of problems,'' Bulls coach Scott Skiles said. Starting in place of the injured TJ Ford (sore left arm), point guard Jose Calderon had 19 points and 14 assists for Toronto. "Jose is playing fantastic right now,'' Bosh said. "He's moving the ball where he's supposed to and taking good shots. He's just poised and controlled. We need that right now, especially with TJ being out.'' Luol Deng had 21 points and nine rebounds in his return to Chicago's starting lineup after missing the previous three games with a sore lower back. Ben Gordon added 17 and Hinrich had 15 for Chicago. Carlos Delfino had 13 points and eight rebounds for Toronto. The victory was the 114th for Sam Mitchell as Raptors coach, moving him past Lenny Wilkens for the most wins in team history. The Raptors led 70-64 after three quarters, but missed their first six shot attempts in the fourth. A pair of jumpers by Chicago's Joe ...
