from: www.huffingtonpost.com A senior military official confirmed to the AP Monday that the video that appears to show the killing of two Reuters employees in Iraq released by WikiLeaks is authentic. As HuffPost's Dan Froomkin reported yesterday, the video shows "a US Army Apache helicopter in Baghdad in 2007 repeatedly opening fire on a group of men that included a Reuters photographer and his driver -- and then on a van that stopped to rescue one of the wounded men." However the military's official response Monday was that it "working to verify the source of the video, its veracity, and when or where it was recorded." There was no update to this statement Tuesday. The AP's military source was unable to confirm the identity of the Reuters employees allegedly killed in the video. Julian Assange, one of WikiLeaks founders, explained the group's decision to release the video, and affirmed his belief in its authenticity, during an interview on Al Jazeera Monday. No, really, this is a gin-u-wine contest being run by the Washington Post. Actual prize: $2600 dollars. www.washingtonpost.com I hope the winner changes the prize into pennies and rolls around in their loot, Scrooge McDuck-style. When a once-proud American institution is crumbling around you, you might as well wallow in its remains. UPDATE/CORRECTION: It's been pointed out that the huge mammoth grand prize is in return for less than a full year's worth of contest participation and writing. I thusly amend the cheesy animated gold "a year" text, but the message stands: if you're going to tarnish your brand with a "pundit contest," at least don't be such cheap bastards about it. Next Nike will get their work done for cheaper-than-legal wages as well by offering a "contest" for the "Next Great Air Jordan Stitcher Upper." Let us not confuse Dan Froomkin of the WashPost’s dot-com and MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann. One is an important part of a large news organization, and the other, to the best of my knowledge, has never been a sports broadcaster.
