In this video, author and journalist Christopher Hitchens delivers the 2010 Daniel Pearl Memorial Lecture. The lecture was presented by the UCLA Burkle Center for International Relations, the Daniel Pearl Foundation and the Yitzhak Rabin Hillel Center for Jewish Life at UCLA. BACKGROUND: Daniel Pearl was a prominent Wall Street Journal reporter and the paper's South Asia bureau chief when he was kidnapped and murdered by terrorists in Pakistan in early 2002. Pearl's father, Judea Pearl, a computer science professor at UCLA, and his family established the Daniel Pearl Foundation to promote and continue Daniel's mission of fostering cross-cultural understanding throughout the world. The lecture series, established at UCLA in 2002, features scholars, journalists and policymakers who have contributed original analyses or constructive approaches to problems of international concern. Previous presenters of the Daniel Pearl Memorial Lecture have included Anderson Cooper, David Brooks, Ted Koppel, Larry King, Jeff Greenfield, Daniel Schorr and Thomas Friedman. In 2006, a parallel lecture series was established at Stanford University, which has featured Sen. Joseph Lieberman, Philip Zimbardo, Bernard-Henri Lvy and Christiane Amanpour.
For the second year in a row, the US Embassy in Skopje joined the global celebration of Daniel Pearl World Music Days with a concert of "The Reporters," a band of journalists from Macedonia, who played on the evening of October 25 at the popular spot near Mother Teresa Monument in the center of Skopje. Many citizens, including a large number of journalists came out to watch Mile, Zarko, Borjan, Petrit and Stojan as they performed familiar songs, but also premiered a song of their own, named Freedom, energizing the audience and making the point loud and clear of the importance of free press in a democratic society. PAO Angela Aggeler introduced The Reporters, stating that freedom of the press requires courage as well as the pursuit of truth and the embrace of integrity. She noted that Danny Pearl was dedicated to these values as well as the understanding that music in our lives raises our spirits and inspires our souls. - For more information about Daniel Pearl World Music Days go to www.danielpearlworldmusicdays.org

the personal attacks is what betray your intent on leaving your wording open. you aren't slick. we've seen this before in our generation with the ilk of Hilary Clinton and Livni. double tongues. people like Livni sponsor groups like J Street that then condemn Livni as a war criminal. Same Game. Hilary says she is against settlements, but then praises Bibi for trying to work something out. Same Game. It is called denying the correlative. the truth is only within a context. IT IS CALLED LYING! apologies are voided for the same reason. they were in the context that I thought maybe there was a different meaning to your words for a bit. I admit I was wrong for apologizing, but Dave Simmons seemed decent and I thought I'd thimk it over. then you attack and play superior... by calling others Narcissist? you've seen a tad too much pop culture. sorry Dave. I've taken a walk. breathed some fresh air, got well balanced and called a spade a spade video.seesmic.com
One fine Thursday afternoon, I was talking to my father (the Stevenson orchestra director) about Daniel Pearl Music Days-related things. He suddenly informed me that I would need to prepare a speech and a piece and do a video recording of both, to be shown at their concert the following Tuesday. Thus followed a very frightening four days, culminating in five straight hours of recording on Monday night with a camera borrowed from the Case Western library. ("Are you okay?" the librarian asked...) Well, it seems I survived, and got away with a good take or two as well. I'd like to record this caprice again under different, not-so-panicked circumstances, but I like to think this turned out pretty well. Thank you, Mark, for letting me be the guinea pig for your cello transcription! :] Happy Daniel Pearl World Music Days - share the love!

Huh? That's sick. Obama says Islamic radicals sawing off a mans head with a butter knife "capured the world's imagination." No, Barack. It was horrifying and it had nothing to do with freedom of the press. They murdered Pearl because he was an American Jew.

As Sudanese hip-hop star and former child combatant Emmanuel Jal says, It took a simple British aid worker to invest in me and here I am today. So my call is: Invest in somebody. I can never change my past. But I can only use that experience to affect my future. In a celebration of music by Sudans rising generation, their voices join those of the Harmony for Humanity concert series around the world to promote cross-cultural understanding through music, innovative communications, and the dedication of journalists everywhere to keeping the public informed. The Ama bring together eight Nuba tribes that speak a single tongue, the Ama language. All eight tribes perform the same traditional dances and songs. The dances all represent moments of daily life and ritual passage.
