Renowned Tenor Anthony Kearns performs at a "Celebration of Irish Spirits" holiday reception at the Capitol Hill Club in Washington, DC on Thurs., Dec. 17, 2009. In this clip, Kearns sings Danny Boy. At the piano is Eric Stern. Possibly the most beloved of all Irish music was finalized in the form most used today by Frederick Weatherly when he set his words to the tune of the "Londonderry Air" in 1912. There is arguably no song more dear to the Irish than Danny Boy. Its sweet poignancy, its delicate strains bring a tear to the eye. It brings visions of a mother's parting from a dear lad; a father's difficult good-bye to his son; a lover's parting in time of war. It is an incredible piece of music which can be heard in pubs and in churches, at parades and wakes, by choirs and soldiers. To the expatriate Irish, it has become an unofficial anthem to the home country left behind, the home of their fathers, Mother Ireland. It is sung wherever people of Irish blood gather, and it is said that all people become Irish when that song is crooned. Danny Boy is never sung more sweetly, with more emotion, care, and purity than when Anthony Kearns sings it. Kearns' appearance was made possible by the Distilled Spirits Council, The Capitol Hill Club, DIAGEO, DDC Advocacy, MH Media, NBC Universal, Reflections Photography, and Kirsten Fedewa and Associates, LLC. Event proceeds benefited The Consortium of Catholic Academies. store.anthonykearnsmusic.com Contact: Kirsten Fedewa (Kirsten ...

The Queen of Swedish rock 'n' roll did this version of "Danny Boy" in 1959. Rock-Olga (real name Birgit Jacobsson) won a talentshow in '58 and got herself a recordcontract at once. She was born on March 16, 1940 and died June 10, 2010. Until the end she sang and toured and was a very popular act when touring together with other early Swedish rockers.

Writers have said it. Poets, too. The only thing the Irish are truly serious about is saying goodbye.
From fabled wakes to the wake-like farewells for sons departing from Ireland to America during the Great Hunger, the Irish linger over goodbyes.

"Danny Boy" is a song whose lyrics were originally written for a different tune in 1910 by Frederick Weatherly, an English lawyer. In 1913 they were modified to fit the melody, Londonderry Air . By many Irish Americans and Irish Canadians Danny Boy is considered to be their unofficial signature song and is often included at Irish-American funerals. Fire department bands throughout the country honor their fallen fire-fighters with this sentimental and bittersweet classic. While the song is supposed to be a message from a woman to a man, Weatherly provided an alternative "Eily dear" for male singers in 1918 as it is just as often sung by men. In addition, some people interpret the song as a message from a parent to a son going off to war. Lyrics: Oh Danny Boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling. From glen to glen and down the mountain side. The summer's gone, and all the flowers dying. 'Tis you, 'tis you must go, and I must bide. But come ye back when summer's in the meadow, or when the valley's hushed and white with snow. 'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow. Oh Danny Boy, oh Danny Boy, I love you so. But when ye come and all the roses falling, and I am dead, as dead I well may be, Go out and find the place where I am lying, And kneel and say an Ave there for me. And I will hear tho' soft your tread above me, and then my grave will warm and sweeter be. For you shall bend and tell me that you love me, And I will sleep in peace until you come to me.
This was one of President Gordon B. Hinckley's (1910-2008) favorite songs and I learned to love it, too. Danny Boy is a song whose lyrics are set to the Irish tune Londonderry Air. The lyrics were originally written for a different tune in 1910 by Frederick Weatherly, an English lawyer, and were modified to fit Londonderry Air in 1913 when Weatherly was sent a copy of the tune by his sister. The first recording was made by Ernestine Schumann-Heink in 1915. Weatherly gave the song to Elsie Griffin, who made it one of the most popular in the new century. Weatherly later suggested in 1928 that the second verse would provide a fitting requiem for the actress Ellen Terry. Source: Wikipedia.
A collection of rather sad Judy Garland pictures and clips to the song 'Danny Boy' (sung in 1955, when she was 33.) I read in one of her biographies that her Dad used to sing this song to her when she was a little girl back in Grand Rapids. The clips are from movies such as Babes on Broadway, Love Finds Andy Hardy, A Star Is Born, Girl Crazy, Meet Me In St Louis and Easter Parade.

Performer - Deanna Durbin Lyrics - Frederick Weatherly The famous ballad "Danny Boy", ironically, was written by a man who never set foot in Ireland. Weatherly, an English barrister who was also a prolific poet, had originally set "Danny Boy" to music he had composed. The song was not successful. When he heard the "Londonderry Air", he realized that "Danny Boy" would fit nicely to that tune. Over 100 songs have been set to "Londonderry Air", but "Danny Boy" is the most famous. Band and ...

So many singers, unknown as well as famous, have unsuccessfully sang this Irish song. I admit this is a hard song to sing but to me, this version by Eva Cassidy is perfection if ever there is perfection. I don't believe anyone can sing this song as beautifully and with as much sincere emotion as Eva. A note I wish to add on Nov1, 2007, for those who do not know, tomorrow Nov 2, 2007 is the 11th anniversary of Eva Cassidy's death 11 years ago.

We are now available to sing in weddings and functions. On the 11th and 12th October, 2008 this trio recorded on a brand new (not Danny Boy) CD to raise money for the Motor Neurone Association. The CD consists of members of Cantorion Colin Jones (The North Wales Male Chorus), now under the baton of John Daniel. As one of our most popular members of the choir, John Puw, suffers from this condition, all proceeds from the CD will go directly to the MND Association Charity in order to assist John and others to cope with such a debilitating disease. Details on how to purchase the CD will be on the choir website (www.cantorioncolinjones.com) as we hope to have it on sale for Christmas. Any support will be much appreciated.
