Trip to dartmoor with a wild camp near the head of the Taw river
Burrator Reservoir, Dartmoor National Park - a well chilled place. Burrator Reservoir is a beautiful spot set in the midst of farmland and moorland close to the villages of Sheepstor and Meavy. Mr Edward Sandeman (1862-1959) was appointed Plymouth's Water Engineer in July 1891. He had previously been the Assistant Engineer at Blackburn in Lancashire, where he had carried out important works worth over £1 million. In December 1891 he prepared a report on the water supply of Plymouth in which he recommended the Burrator Gorge for a storage reservoir and the provision of a direct pipeline from there into the Town. The Corporation adopted his scheme on March 30th 1892. The Plymouth Corporation Act of June 9th 1893 authorised the construction of the reservoir, along with a pipe-line from there to the service reservoir at Roborough. Work started on the construction of the Burrator Dam on August 9th 1893, with Sheepstor Dam being started the following year, both under Mr Sandeman's supervision. The Burrator Dam is built across the river Meavy at the Burrator Gorge. It is constructed of concrete faced with dressed granite. The smaller one at Sheepstor is built on a dividing ridge between the Meavy and Sheepstor Brook and is formed by an earth embankment with a core wall of puddled clay above the original ground level and a concrete section below ground. Officially opened Wednesday September 21st 1898 by the Mayor, Councillor JT Bond. It cost £178000 of which the two Dams cost ...
QUALITY DARTMOOR, LR FIRST RIDDEN. SHARPHAM WIZARD Excellent bloodlines by Premier Stallion Wilbye Victory by Brandsby Tornado, and out of Thornbrook Wilby by Springwater Intermezzo. Heartbreaking sale of a substantial, quality registered Dartmoor Pon. Beautiful rich red bay gelding, full up 12hh, rising 8. A super character!! Same family home for the past 3½ years and only for sale as hopelessly outgrown. My daughter is now nearly 14. There is no doubt if this pony was 14.2 he would be staying with us forever! We wish we could. Proven to be a super safe pony for the smallest of children and is good on and off the lead rein, although, is equally suitable for an experienced child or small adult. Shown very successfully at county level inhand as a youngster, and won Northern Dartmoor Pony Society Championship Gelding class (inhand) in 2005. He has done lots of ridden showing locally inhand, LR, FR, junior and open classes and always comes home with red rosettes and trophies (many in 2009 season). He has the potential to go a lot further. He has 3 lovely paces, a good jump and has done cross country. Would easily hunt. As well as being a super, fun pony for my daughter, he has taught two little girls to ride and given them loads of confidence. Wiz is 100% in every way ridden, farrier, box, shows, traffic, hacking, dogs, large trains!!! etc, etc. He is fully up to date with injections, worming, farrier, teeth rasping and has been very well looked after and loved whilst with ...

An amazing place, well worth a visit - From the website; Becky Falls first opened to the public in 1903 and has been attracting and inspiring poets, writers, painters and visitors ever since, including Rupert Brooke and Virginia Woolf, both of whom stayed here. But its history goes much further than that. Although a very popular destination for Victorian visitors, the Falls have been sought out for centuries. Firstly, by the inhabitants of the local Bronze and Iron Age settlements and medieval villages (the remains of which can still be visited today) who came in search of water, wood and shelter. The arrival of the railways in the mid 1800's heralded the advent of day visitors to Dartmoor and horse-drawn buses from Bovey Tracey brought tourists via the newly constructed road across the moor, a trip which must have been a source of intense pleasure and wonder as Dartmoor was, until the late 19th century, a wilderness, remote and unknown. Today's visitors tend to arrive by car or foot (although we're sure many would welcome the return of horse-drawn buses!) but they still come in search of the same woodland valley. The Becky Falls Woodland Park you see today, aside from the cafeteria/gift shop area, has remained relatively unchanged throughout that time. Some visitors come to see what is often described as one of the most scenic and untouched areas of Dartmoor, a hidden, tranquil valley in which wildlife and woodland thrive. Others bring children to enjoy the exhilarating ...

An event organised through NaturalBushcraft, four of us hooked up for a camp on Dartmoor, with a 10 miles route planned out to hike. The weather was beautiful, as was the forest and the rest of Dartmoor. If you would be interested in meeting up like this, visit www.naturalbushcraft.co.uk as there are numerous gatherings organised by NaturalBushcraft which are free and a superb way to meet likeminded bushcraft people, share skills and knowledge, learning a thing or two along the way. Coverage of 1132 (nee 205032) at Meldon and Okehampton on this excellent railway line.
This film takes us to the Dartmoor Railway located on the northern edge of Dartmoor in Devon. Once part of Southern Railway network, the 'Withered Arm' was the former Exeter-Okehampton-Tavistock-Plymouth route along with minor branchlines. The line beyond Meldon Quarry closed in 1968 as part of the Beeching Axe. The Dartmoor Railway now runs between Sampford Courtenay and Meldon Quarry, push-pull trains—usually top and tailed operates the line. In this film focuses on Diesel-Electric Multiple Unit Class 205 (known as the "Thumper") operate a regular Dartmoor Railway service. These multiple units introduced from 1957-1962 operated on the suburbs of South East London, and on the line from Hastings to Ashford. Along with the South West routes to Southamton and Portsmouth. But were never seen anywere in Devon, so its unique to see a DEMU operate out of its former third-rail territory. The impressive Meldon Viaduct can be seen in this film along with a dynamic view of Dartmoor. Ballast trains usually operate between Coleford Junction and Meldon, on weekdays "as required" basis. The route itself is owned by Aggregate Industries who maintain a quarry supplying railway ballast at Meldon.

This was the best thing I did when at Bryanston School (Blandford, Dorset). It was a few days in Dartmoor, and we got to go rock-climbing. This was my first ever go at it, and I remember that it tested me to the limit. I had totally unsuitable trainers on (they had soles that flared out at the bottom, which meant that I needed a huge foothold to get any decent grip). I had my Super-8 camera in a sort of improvised holster. This climb completely changed the way I looked at the world. I became aware of how convenient all the surfaces I walked on were (stairs etc.) and I looked at buildings in a new way - seeing them not as a succession of flat floors, but as far more 3D, intricate, and climbable. Clearly visible in this film are James A'Court and Cara Frost, class-mates of mine, a mystery lad from the year below ours, and our teacher Mr Bourne who is seen abseiling in a spectacularly tweedy outfit, including deer-stalker and plus-fours. www.LloydianAspects.co.uk

Approaching an Exchange: Dartmoor is 4:30 minute excerpt of the 12:00 minute film by Claire Long and Anna Keleher. The piece documents a series of group visits to an archaeological site on Dartmoor. This participatory project approaches an intercultural, intertemporal "exchange" with the original inhabitants of a Bronze Age settlement in Dartmoor National Park. The work addresses and presses against boundaries of time and preconceptions of past peoples through the metaphor of exchange. The ...

The bronze age prehistoric stone rows of Merrivale, in Dartmoor, Devon. The main area of archaeological interest is to the south-east of the hamlet at grid reference SX556746. Although it has been diminished over time, the site includes a 3.8m standing stone, a stone circle and a stone row. Also visible are two stone avenues running parallel to each other on either side of a stream. The southern avenue is 263.5 metres long and has the remains of a barrow in the middle. The northern avenue is slightly shorter. Both avenues are only about 1 metre wide down the centre. To the south of the avenues is a large cist which contained a flint scraper, a number of flint flakes and a whetstone for polishing metal items. The 'lid' of the cist was broken in two by a farmer sometime in the past who made a gatepost out of it. Numerous tors are visible from the site, including King's Tor and Staple Tor. The stone row was formerly known in the area as the Potato Market or Plague Market, supposedly since provisions for Tavistock were left here during an outbreak of plague. Crossing remarked on how insignificant the stones appear, given the size of some of the raw materials available.
