On Tuesday, April 27, NC State chancellor Randy Woodson travelled to Kannapolis, NC to meet with scientists and administrators at the NC Research Campus (NCRC). The North Carolina Research Campus is located north of Charlotte in the former textile mill town of Kannapolis, North Carolina. Scientists and university administrators from several North Carolina universities moved into two newly-constructed, jointly operated NCRC buildings in October 2008. Major research themes for most NCRC faculty center on the study of plant-based foods and how compounds produced in plants can protect against disease and support human health. The campus represents a major effort by the state of North Carolina to revitalize the region following the decline of the textile industry. The campus is supported mainly through annual funding from the state of North Carolina, federal research grants to university researchers located on the campus, and investment of real estate by businessman David H. Dole and Chiquita remain the top two US banana companies. Today the company does business in over 90 countries and takes in upwards of $7.7 billion in annual revenue. Dole is owned by billionaire David H. Murdock. Banana company Chiquita Brands International said Wednesday it has agreed to a $25 million fine after admitting it paid terrorists for protection in a volatile farming region of Colombia. The settlement resolves a lengthy Justice Department investigation into the companys financial dealings with right-wing paramilitaries and leftist rebels the US government deems terrorist groups. In court documents filed Wednesday, federal prosecutors said the Cincinnati-based company and several unnamed high-ranking corporate officers paid about $1.7 million between 1997 and 2004 to the United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia, known as AUC for its Spanish initials. The AUC has been responsible for some of the worst massacres in Colombias civil conflict and for a sizable percentage of the countrys cocaine exports. The US government designated the right-wing militia a terrorist organization in September 2001. In Colombia, however, the Chiquita name has recently come to symbolize the confirmation of a long-suspected relationship between multinational firms and illegal armies fighting in the nation's four-decade-old war.
