Part 2 - Byron Stripling sits down with Keith David to discuss the the upcoming Columbus Jazz Orchestra concert entitled Cole & Cole at the Southern Theatre April 21 25, 2010. A witty and sublime homage to Cole Porter and the unforgettable Nat King Cole with singer, movie actor and narrator Keith David. These songs live in our hearts forever. Where do you start with the superlatives about Keith David performing Cole Porter and Nat King Cole? This Tony Award nominee for 1992s Jellys Last Jam, has appeared in dozens of movies, TV roles and as a voice actor, most recently as Dr. Facilier in Disneys new animated film, The Princess and the Frog. He also narrated the Ken Burns documentaries Jazz and The War.
Here is Cabbage Alley that came out of Hey Poky Way to end the Wanee Allstar Funk Jam (as we called it)..... this was a totally improvised set that George Porter decided to throw together after we learned that Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings could not make it due to planes being grounded in europe. The Funky Meters started about an hour early and when they were finished with their set George told everyone to hang around and there would be a jam session. This is only a few minutes of the 55 minute set that took place Saturday afternoon. This was definitely the set of the weekend for me. In this Video: George Porter Jr - bass Ivan Neville - organ Ian Neville - guitar David Russell Batiste - drums Cody Dickenson - cymbals Oteil Burbrigde - bass Bobby Lee Rodgers - guitar Kofi Burbridge - fender rhodes Matt Grondin - guitar Played earlier during this set: JoJo Hermann - fender rhodes (first 2 songs) Cody Dickenson - electric washboard through wah-wah pedal (first 2 songs) Art Neville - organ Luther Dickenson - guitar Robert Randolph - dancing across the stage near the end

Isaac Lee Hayes, Jr. (August 20, 1942 August 10, 2008)was an American singer-songwriter, actor and musician. Hayes was one of the main creative forces behind southern soul music label Stax Records, where he served as both an in-house songwriter and producer with partner David Porter during the mid-1960s. Alongside, Bill Withers, the Sherman Brothers, Steve Cropper and John Fogerty, Hayes & Porter were named to the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005 in recognition of their string of successful hit songs for Sam & Dave, Carla Thomas and others In the late 1960s. Their hit song "Soul Man" by Sam & Dave has been recognized as one of the best or most influential songs of the past 50 years by the Grammy Hall of Fame, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Rolling Stone magazine, and the RIAA Songs of the Century. In 1970, Hayes released two albums, The Isaac Hayes Movement and To Be Continued. The former stuck to the four song template of his previous album. Jerry Butler's "I Stand Accused" begins with a trademark spoken word monologue, and Bacharach's "I Just Don't Know What to Do with Myself" is re-worked. The latter spawned the classic "The Look Of Love", another Bacharach song transformed into an eleven-minute epic of lush orchestral rhythm (mid-way it breaks into a rhythm guitar jam for a couple of minutes before suddenly resuming the slow love song). An edited three-minute version was issued as a single.[7] The album also featured the instrumental "Ike's Mood," which segued into ...
"Dreamlover" is a song written and produced by American singer Mariah Carey, Dave Hall and Walter Afanasieff, and recorded for Carey's fourth album Music Box (1993). Columbia Records executives brought in Afanasieff to tone the song down, because they felt the original production was too rough and mellow. It is built around a sample of The Emotions' "Blind Alley," written by David Porter, but uses a Hammond organ.[2] Its protagonist pictures an ideal man, her "dream lover". It was released as the first single from Music Box in the third quarter of 1993, and marked the start of a trend of Carey's to use samples as backbones for the lead singles from her studio albums; later examples include "Fantasy" (1995), "Honey" (1997) and "Heartbreaker" (1999). It was nominated for the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, losing to "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston. It won a BMI Pop Award, as had Carey's every US single other than "I'll Be There". "Dreamlover" has been one of Carey's most popular songs in concert, through 2006 holding a regular slot in all of her tours' setlists, often near the beginning of the show. Rock singer Bruce Springsteen sampled "Dreamlover" for his song "Let's Be Friends," from the album The Rising (2002).

Few figures exerted greater influence over the music of the 1960s and 1970s than Isaac Hayes; after laying the groundwork for the Memphis soul sound through his work with Stax-Volt Records, Hayes began a highly successful solo career which predated not only the disco movement but also the evolution of rap. Hayes was born on August 20, 1942, in Covington, TN; his parents died during his infancy, and he was raised by his grandparents. After making his public debut singing in church at the age of five, he taught himself piano, organ, and saxophone before moving to Memphis to perform on the city's club circuit in a series of short-lived groups like Sir Isaac and the Doo-Dads, the Teen Tones, and Sir Calvin and His Swinging Cats. In 1962, he began his recording career, cutting sides for a variety of local labels. Two years later, Hayes began playing sax with the Mar-Keys, which resulted in the beginning of his long association with Stax Records. After playing on several sessions for Otis Redding, Hayes was tapped to play keyboards in the Stax house band, and eventually established a partnership with songwriter David Porter. Under the name the Soul Children, the Hayes-Porter duo composed some 200 songs, reeling off a string of hits for Stax luminaries like Sam & Dave (the brilliant "When Something Is Wrong with My Baby," "Soul Man," and "Hold on, I'm Comin'"), Carla Thomas ("BABY"), and Johnnie Taylor ("I Got to Love Somebody's Baby," "I Had a Dream"). In 1967, Hayes issued his ...

In honor of Pete Seeger's 90th birthday, a segment of June's interview with Pete at his home on May 28, 2008. Pete knew her grandmother Marjorie Porter (her dad's mother), who was an archivist/historian in Vermont and upstate New York. Anyone who's known June for any period of time knows that she is passionate about the IMA archives, and considers that an integral part of the IMA legacy. Now she knows for sure that she came by that "legitimately" ! ~ Pete not only remembers Marjorie vividly but gives an eloquent account of her and how she collected songs that she passed on to people like Pete. [Songs on his album "Champlain Valley Songs" were ones that he got directly from her]. The IMA archives include tapes and various memorabilia that June has been collecting since the 1960's. Recent artists who have agreed to be taped exclusively for the archives include Ani di Franco (Italy tour, 2001); Dar Williams (with cellist Matt Haimovitz, Chicago 2002); Melissa Ferrick (Live at IMA East); Maria Muldaur (Live at IMA West); Toshi Reagon (Live at IMA West and IMAEast); Joel Zoss (recording at IMAEast); Ferron (recording, and Live at IMA West); Holly Near and Ronnie Gilbert (recording live at IMA West); Bitch and Animal (recording their album Sour Bitch and Rhyme at IMA East, 2002-'03); Issa (formerly known as Jane Siberry, live at IMAEast); Cheryl Wheeler (Michigan Women's Festival); Patty Larkin (various live performances); Leah Kunkel (live, in the studio, and teaching a IMA ...

A Tribute to Jerome "Chef" McElroy + ( Isaac Hayes ) Chef dies March 22 2008 Jerome "Chef" McElroy is a former recurring character on the Comedy Central series South Park. He was voiced by Isaac Hayes. The character was killed off in the beginning of the tenth season in "The Return of Chef", following public controversy with Hayes, who left the show after the controversial episode "Trapped in the Closet", which satirized Scientology. Issac Hayes August 20th 1942 - August 10th 2008 saac Lee Hayes, Jr. (August 20, 1942 August 10, 2008)[1] was an American Academy Award-winning singer-songwriter, actor and musician. Hayes was one of the main creative forces behind southern soul music label Stax Records, where he served as both an in-house songwriter and producer with partner David Porter during the mid-1960s. Hayes & Porter were named to the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2005 in recognition of their string of successful hits songs for Sam & Dave, Carla Thomas and others In the late 1960s. Their hit song "Soul Man" by Sam & Dave has been recognized as one of the best or most influential songs of the past 50 years by the Grammy Hall of Fame, The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Rolling Stone Magazine, and RIAA Songs of the Century. Hayes became a recording artist, and recorded successful soul albums such as Hot ...
This Memphis, Tennessee Stax Records mainstay was formed by Norman West (formerly of The Del-Rios), and included the talents of John Colbert aka J. Blackfoot, Anita Louis and Shelbra Bennett. The group was formed by Isaac Hayes and David Porter in order to fill the gap that Sam & Dave had left after parting from the Atlantic record label. They scored 15 R&B hits between 1968 and 1978. Norman R. West, Jr., a country preacher's kid, grew up in Louisiana, and whereby singing in his father's church and any other church where his father was asked to preach, Norman and his brothers (Joe, James, Robert) were there to offer a few songs. Norman also was a member of various quartets and groups in his formative years before he began sneaking out and singing in local clubs, then later formed The Soul Children. 'J. Blackfoot' is a nickname Colbert picked up during his early years, due to his habit of walking without footwear on the tarred sidewalks of Memphis during the hot summers. He spent six months as lead singer with a new line-up of The Bar-Kays after the original members were killed with Otis Redding in a plane crash. He later launched a solo career as J. Blackfoot with the single "Taxi", which climbed into the R&B Top Ten in 1984. Both Norman West and J. Blackfoot are still touring performing to date with their solo careers. Norman West is due to release a new single in 2008 called 'Long Way Home'.
With albums including 1969's "Hot Buttered Soul" and the double-disc, Grammy-winning "Black Moses" in 1971, Hayes laid the groundwork for both disco and hip-hop. His rich, baritone voice backed by gently unfurling, string-laden arrangements showed how R&B could be both funky and ornate. His famous ruminative interludes on such songs as his cover of Jimmy Webb's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix" set the stage for rap's elevation of the black male speaking voice. He was most famous for his 1971 soundtrack for the blaxploitation classic "Shaft," which brought him an Academy Award for best song as well as two Grammys, but Hayes had a long and storied career beyond that Hollywood high point. In 2002, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His music and his image as a black artist had a titanic power, especially during the apex of his fame. With his shaved head, omnipresent sunglasses and equally ever-present gold jewelry, he cut a strong, marketable figure. In the 1970s, he released a string of albums for Stax Records, a label that offered a grittier counterpoint to the Motown sound. Hayes' recordings expanded the playing field for soul and R&B artists, proving that an album-oriented market existed for his experimental sounds. "Hayes' story is one of epic proportions," wrote ethnomusicologist Rob Bowman in "Soulsville USA: The Story of Stax Records" (1997). "In the first few years of the 1970s he single-handedly redefined the sonic possibilities for black music, in ...
Caryn Rae one more time at the Hollywood Beach Theatre - I posted this just a few days before Isaac Hayes died. He was one of my musical heroes and co-wrote with David Porter some of the greatest R&B songs of the 60's that Sam & Dave sang & recorded so brilliantly. Isaac, I Thank You. XOXO

One of my favorite songs ever. A Cole Porter tune. I regret saying I do not remember the name of the girl singing with Judy. The man's name is David Wayne. I also know that this is from the Ford Star Jubilee.
Porter Wagoner's - Trouble in the Amen Corner, originally released on the 1966 RCA Victor LP called 'The Grand Ole Gospel'. More recently re-issued on the 2003 TeeVee Label 2-CD set entitled '22 Grand Old Gospel 2004' and again on the 2005 Gusto Teevee album ... 20 All-Time Greatest Hits. The music and the lyrics are provided for entertainment and educational purposes only. Trouble in the Amen Corner It was a stylish congregation; you could see they'd been around, And they had the biggest pipe organ of any church in town. But over in the Amen Corner of this church sat brother Ira, and he insisted every Sunday on singing in the choir. His voice was cracked and broken; age had touched his vocal chords, And he'd get behind and miss the words. Well, the choir stormed and blustered that brother Ira sang too slow And he sang the tunes that were in style a hundred years ago. So at last the storm cloud burst, the church was told in vine That brother Ira must stop his singing or the choir was gonna resign. So the pastor appointed a committee, I think it was three or four, And they got in their big fine car and drove up to Ira's door. They found the choir's great trouble sittin' in an old arm-chair, And the summer's golden sunbeams lay upon his snow-white hair. He was singing rock of ages in a cracked voice soft and low But the angels in Heaven understood him and that's all he cared to know Said York, "We're here dear brother, with the vestry's approbation To discuss a little ...
THE SONG FEATURED IN THIS VIDEO, "HERE'S TO THE SONGWRITERS" IS AVAILABLE AT cdbaby.com Bless the songwriters for the songs that they sing The beauty and truth in the music they bring They get up each day and they struggle to say What they feel, to write something real Some days a good line is easier to find Than getting their own lives to perfectly rhyme But they take all the hurt and they put it in words and they smile, it's all been worthwhile Sing your song for us Full of glory, life and love And if the words you say are true Then the song lives in me like the song lives in you Bless the songwriters, the keepers of the flame Whether they're famous or we don't know their names They pick out a tune in a quiet, lonely room Like a soul, digging for gold Some days inspiration just flows through the pen Some nights it feels like they'll never write again But they keep playing on for the sake of a song And the times when everything chimes Sing your song for us Full of glory, life and love And if the melody rings true The song lives in me Like the song lives in you Come on and sing your song for us Full of glory, life and love Sometimes life's a dance, sometimes a blues But there's a song in us all Like the one that's in you So here's to the songwriters And the power of what music can do WORDS AND MUSIC © JIMMY SCOTT 2008 www.jimmyscottsongwriter.com XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX For those who might need a little help, here's a breakdown of the great songwriters ...
