Burning Roma completed his march through Tampa Bay Downs's three-year-old races on Sunday when he cruised to a 2 3/4-length victory over American Prince in the $200000 Tampa Bay Derby. Harold Queen's Rubiano colt now has the Triple Crown in his sights, but the likelihood is that he will go for the Preakness Stakes (G1) rather than the Kentucky Derby (G1). Last fall, Burning Roma was awarded a victory in the Futurity Stakes (G1) on the disqualification of City Zip, and he subsequently finished fourth in both the Lane's End Breeders' Futurity (G2) and the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (G1). For the Tampa Bay foray, trainer Anthony Dutrow turned Burning Roma over to Heather Giglio, with impressive results. Under Tampa Bay jockey Juan Umana, Burning Roma won the Sam F. Davis Stakes by a length over American Prince on March 3. For the Tampa Bay Derby, Giglio turned to the experienced hands of Richard Migliore. Burning Roma lost his most significant competition when trainer Bill Mott scratched Cradle Stakes winner Mongoose, and he went off as the 9-to-10 favorite in an Giglio-trained entry with Cielo's Honor, who finished tenth. Leaving from the eighth post position in a field of 11, cruised to the lead on Tampa Bay's final turn and gradually pulled away from his opponents. American Prince finished 1 ¼ lengths ahead of third finisher Paging, and early pacesetter Tour of the Cat tired to finish fourth. Burning Roma ran the Tampa Bay Derby's 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.30 on a fast track ...
