A year after the bittersweet Daytona 500, it was time for another classic Speedweeks. One thing I can't help but notice is NBC's coverage of the pre-race. 1. Cut to the call to start engines, where we see Jeff Gordon already sitting in the car... 2. After chatting in the booth, cut to Jeff Gordon walking to his car with Brooke.... wait. That isn't Brooke, this chick is blonde?? 3. A few months later, Brooke files for divorce, stating she saw Jeff with a "svelte, curvy blonde" at the Daytona 500. 4. Jeff says "Thanks for that, NBC...." I don't usually make my videos this long, but as long as there are highlights to show, I don't really care. ***EDIT*** So... I just saw a picture of Brooke Gordon with blonde hair. Hmm... interestingly enough, I do remember her saying she saw him with a blonde woman. Maybe she didn't recongize herself. lol I am thoroughly confused.
This is the live footage of Dale Earnhardt Sr.'s fatal crash. Dale was one the greatest NASCAR drivers of all time, and he will never be forgotten. On the front stretch coming to 3 laps to go, Earnhardt made contact with Sterling Marlin's front right fender. Earnhardt's car wiggled but Earnhardt kept control and he remained in third position. Marlin was known for having a fast car throughout the race, and Earnhardt repeatedly blocked his attempts at passing during the last few laps. With less than two laps remaining, Darrell Waltrip commented that "Sterling has beat the front end off of that old Dodge (Marlin's car) trying to get around Dale (Earnhardt)". Heading into Turn 3 on the last lap, Earnhardt was racing three wide with Marlin to his left and Schrader to his right. In the corner, Earnhardt's left rear quarter made slight contact with Marlin's front bumper. Earnhardt's car slid off the track's steep banking, onto the flat apron, and then turned sharply up the track toward the outside retaining wall. As the #3 car came up the track it collided with the #36 Pontiac driven by Ken Schrader. Schrader's car hit Earnhardt's car just behind the passenger door, causing both cars to run nose-first into the wall. Earnhardt's #3 hit at a critical angle at nearly 160 miles per hour. The right-rear wheel assembly broke off the car on impact. The hood pins severed and the hood flapped open, slamming against the windshield as the car slid slowly down the track. To most observers ...
Bobby Allison is the winner of the 20th running of the great American race. The competition is thinned on lap 60 when Richard Petty, Darrell Waltrip, and David Pearson (running 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at the time) all tangle and crash into the inside wall just before pit road entrance. Buddy Baker's blown engine late in the race ensures the victory for Bobby Allison in his 15th attempt to win the big one. Does anyone have footage of AJ Foyt's crash on lap 68 of the race (not shown here)? I believe he may have flipped during the race but have never seen the crash. Time of race: 3:07:49 Average Speed: 159.73 mph Pole Speed: 187.536 mph Cautions: 5 for 24 laps Margin of Victory: 33.2 sec Attendance: 140000 Purse: $56300
Cale Yarborough defeats Benny Parsons by 1.39 seconds to take his second Daytona 500 victory. Yarborough is one of only 3 drivers to win the Daytona 500 back-to-back (Petty in 73 & 74; Yarborough in 83 & 84; Marlin in 94 & 95) and also has the record for the longest gap between victories for repeat winners (9 year gap between his wins in 68 & 77). The race is also noteworthy that for the first time a woman, Janet Guthrie, competed in the Great American race. Time of race: 3:15:48 Average Speed: 153.218 mph Pole Speed: 188.048 mph Cautions: 6 for 37 laps Margin of Victory: 1.39 sec Attendance: 135000 Purse: $63700
Richard Petty captures his third Daytona 500 win ahead of Buddy Baker, giving Petty Enterprises a 1-2 finish. This was the first Daytona 500 where restrictor plates were mandated for all cars running greater than a 358 cubic inch engine. The restricted speeds didn't prevent one of the most spectacular crashes in Daytona 500 history from happening as Maynard Troyer suffers a series of barrel rolls early in the race. Dick Brooks pilots the only winged car in the field and drives his Dodge Daytona to a 7th place finish. This would be the last NASCAR event to feature the aerodynamic winged car. Time of race: 3:27:40 Average Speed: 144.462 mph Pole Speed: 182.744 mph Cautions: 7 for 44 laps Margin of Victory: 10 sec Attendance: 80000 Purse: $45450
The first running of the Daytona 500 took place on February 22, 1959 with Lee Petty edging out Johnny Beauchamp in a dramatic photo finish. Beauchamp was initially declared the winner and it took NASCAR 3 days to determine that Petty had won. There were no caution flags during the race and it was the only Daytona 500 that featured convertibles (20 of the 59 starters ran convertibles). The race lasted 3:41:22 with an average speed of 135.521 mph. Time of race: 3:41:22 Average Speed: 135.521 mph Pole Speed: 140.121 mph Cautions: none Margin of Victory: 2 feet Attendance: 41921 Purse: $19050

Jamie McMurray has wandered through New York before largely unnoticed. That changed big time when he won the Daytona 500 Sunday. So much so, while part of a media tour in New York Tuesday, he was confronted by fans thrusting all sorts of stuff at him for autographs - including a Big Mac box. "NASCAR fans will bring some pretty random stuff to sign," McMurray told the Daily News. "The Big Mac box was the most creative." Moments before the fan left, McMurray shot a picture of the box and posted it on Twitter. McMurray isn't the first to win the Daytona 500, but he's the first to Tweet his way through the media blitz that follows. That's how the new stars of NASCAR roll. "The great part of Twitter is you get to show the fans what you're doing," McMurray told the News. "They can read about it from the writers, but when you see it from the driver's perspective and have pictures from his phone, it's different." McMurray has been doing a lot of Tweeting along his whirlwind tour of the city that started the morning after his win at Daytona. He got to New York Monday via NASCAR's jet, and had to rush off to Bergdorf Goodman for a suit and clothes for his wife. Then, with just moments to spare he was on the set at CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman." The tour picked up Tuesday with stops with Duke Castiglione at WNYW/Ch. 5, the Fox Business Channel, "Live with Regis & Kelly," a media luncheon, a call with the News, and a conference call after that.

"I can't really put it into words the way it feels," said McMurray, who broke down in tears several times after the race. "I'm trying to be genuine and as sincere as I can and not sound cliche: as a kid growing up, this is what you dream of, of being able to win the Daytona 500." McMurray did it with a huge push from former teammate Greg Biffle to move past leader Kevin Harvick on NASCAR's second attempt at a "green-white-checkered" finish - a two-lap overtime policy that was tweaked this week to create exciting finishes. It worked. Once out front, McMurray still had to contend with Earnhardt, a 12-time Daytona winner who was bearing down on his rear bumper. When he beat him to the finish line by .119 seconds, McMurray climbed from his car, sprinted to the race logo in the infield grass, and dropped to his knees in a tear-soaked celebration. "Fans deserve probably more of a show, so that's what they got," said Earnhardt, who settled for second. Because the drivers weren't positive the patch of pavement between turns 1 and 2 could hold, they couldn't risk holding back after the second repair. It was possible that the track would split again over those final 80 miles, and the race would be called before its conclusion. So the drivers beat and banged their way through the field in a white-knuckle final 32 laps. Then a flurry of late-race accidents created three two-lap sprints. It was that final segment that was so breathtaking, in part because of Earnhardt's unbelievable ...
