The Politics Hour (February 19, 2010): DCPS Chancellor Michelle Rhee responds to questions about her statements earlier this month to Fast Company magazine about the district's October 2009 layoff of 266 teachers and staff: "I got rid of teachers who had hit children, who had had sex with children, who had missed 78 days of school," Rhee told the magazine. Rhee claimed that the magazine chose to exclude her comments praising many of the teachers and staff who were let go and discussed her challenges in dealing with the media.

The New Latino Movement and Young & Powerful - DC joined up on Saturday, August 22, 2009 to volunteer at HD Cooke Elementary School as Part of President Obama's United We Serve Initiative Over 30 volunteers from diverse backgrounds assisted by transporting several hundred boxes across the campus, unpacking boxes and storing books, files and paper supplies. Volunteers also decorated the school walls and helped individual teachers prepare their classrooms for the First Day of School. HD Cooke serves a student population of mainly Latino and African-American children, 90% of whom are classified as low-income. The school is located in the Adams Morgan / 16th Street neighborhood of Washington, DC and was named the WORST of 105 elementary school buildings in 1999. After a 5-year renovation, HD Cooke opened its doors on Monday, August 24, 2009 as the first green, LEED-certified, elementary school in the District. The New Latino Movement is a coalition of young, progressive individuals from across America that were involved in the 2008 presidential election cycle campaigning in, and empowering, Latino communities.
