A legal agreement that was created by the Council of Europe. Although it is not an EU agreement, all the member states have individually ratified it (voted to obey it) and the EU as a whole has signed up to it. This means that the EU must respect the Convention in all its activities and that individual citizens can take a case against the EU in the European Court of Human Rights if they believe their rights have not been respected.
An organisation that is not part of the EU but that has formed the European Court of Human Rights and the European Convention on Human Rights, both of which aim to promote human rights and tolerance across Europe and combat racism and other forms of discrimination. It is based in Strasbourg, a French town city near the German border.
