This is an opinion piece on "global warming" and "climate change". Climate change is not a myth, but its also not necessarily the blown out of proportion disaster it is portrayed as. No im not saying we can dump toxic waste into the niger delta and assume mother nature will fix it on her own quickly enough to justify our actions. All im saying is take a deep breath, and worth through a solution to keep the earth clean. Have a little respect for the planet that keeps you alive. Who knows. The eco-nuts may be right and if they are, we are all fucked. If they arent, well then at least we have a clean earth to live on. Dont be that dick that leaves a toxic wasteland to his kids and calls it paradise. Here are my sources for the facts quoted. This is the VOA Special English Agriculture Report, from voaspecialenglish.com The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization says deforestation has decreased over the past ten years. But it still continues at a high rate in many countries. Deforestation is mainly caused by the cutting down of tropical forests to provide land for agriculture. The worlds total forest area is just over four billion hectares. About thirteen million hectares of forest were cut down or lost through natural causes each year in the last ten years. This compares with about sixteen million hectares per year during the nineteen nineties. The FAO study covers two hundred thirty-three countries and areas. The study found that Brazil and Indonesia have reduced their deforestation rates. The two countries had the highest loss of forests in the nineteen nineties. In addition, the study noted tree-planting programs in countries such as China, India, Vietnam and the United States. These programs, along with natural expansion of forests in some areas, have added more than seven million hectares of new forests each year. South America and Africa had the highest yearly loss of forests during the last ten years. South America lost four million hectares. Africa lost almost three and a half million hectares. However, Asia gained more than two million hectares a year in the last decade. In North America and Central America, the forest area remained about the same. In Europe, it continued to expand, but at ...
Global consumer product giants Unilever and Nestle have stopped buying palm oil for use in its goods from Indonesia's largest producer Sinar Mas. The company is accused by environmental activists Greenpeace of illegally clearing forests in Indonesia for its plantations. Sinar Mas denies the claims and says it's hired independent auditors to prove its case. Step Vaessen reports (27 April, 2010).
It is another corn harvesting season in Pailin, a province in northwestern Cambodia, and farmers are busy harvesting and packing the produce for buyers. A war zone during the Khmer Rouge era, today Pailin is a major agricultural center where corn, bean and cassava farms are the main lifeline for many residents like Nuon Thol. This plantation has provided me with the income that I need to support my family and the education of my four children, he said. More than 80 percent of the Cambodias population lives in the countryside and depends on subsistence farming. But land degradation and deforestation, a side effect of increased farming activity, has become a major environmental issue. The main cause of the loss of forest is the increase in the population said Deputy Governor Leng Vuth. We now have 70000 residents compared to 10000 a seven-fold increase in a 10-year period. In the past, Pailins main economic activity was gemstone mining. Today, that has shifted to agriculture, and approximately 40000 hectares of Pailins forests have been cleared and burned to make way for crops including corn, beans and cassava. UNDP, along with the Ministry of Agriculture, is addressing the growing environmental impact of farming by identifying factors that contribute to land degradation. This land management programme will educate farmers about appropriate farming techniques that insure sustainable land use. Beyond deforestation, there is an urgent need to reform farming techniques as a ...

State College Area High Schools Green Sierra Coalition presents "Deforestation!" for PSU Chance Idol. Below are the lyrics, and remember to watch in 720p! The earth is warming, and something evil's making it occur, Is it pollution? Killing the lives of organisms, Endangered now, they don't know where to go their homes are gone, They don't know how, they're ever gonna make it this way, It happens today! Deforestation! Kills the trees, There ain't no second chance for the leaves blowin' in the breeze, Deforestation! Kills the trees, When trees are all gone there will be no air left to breathe. You hear the trees fall and now the squirrels do not have a home, You feel the ground shake and you realize that you are not alone, Open your eyes, and look around as you see devastation, But all the while, you hear the chainsaw creepin' up behind, You're paralyzed. Deforestation! Kill the trees, There ain't no second chance for all the species goin' extinct, Deforestation! Kills the trees, The change it's gonna bring is much more harmful than you think, Cut into fragments, the biodiversity goes down, Wood used for projects, the urban sprawl of towns, This is the threat to all life. Axe-men out to get you, their saws closing in on every side They will enclose you, unless someone learns about your need to hide, They don't realize, that most plants and creatures live in woodlands, All through the years, the rainforest will slowly disappear, They'll make it clear! Deforestation! Kills ...

A wander around my latest collage on deforestation. All the photos are cut out from National Geographic magazines and glued down onto collage board. This work measures a whopping 160 X 110 cms! This collage took me 3½ months of fulltime work to complete. I hope to raise funds for a charity called the world land trust. I want to make it clear that the world land trust in no way endorses my work, website nor any of my products. Please go to www.worldlandtrust.org During the last 20 years they have saved over 400000 acres of tropical rain forest thanks to donations received from the public. They work in relation with local NGOs and target areas (as far afield as Brazil, India and Borneo) menaced by deforestation and where there is a particularly rich bio-diversity. I am donating 50% of all poster sales to their cause. Please go to their website to find out how you can help save both tropical rain forest and bio-diversity from exploitation. Amongst the details in this collage you can find: A herd of cows grazing on a newly deforested region of Brazils Amazon basin. Fast food restaurants in the USA including McDonalds buy this meat, even though they deny any involvement in deforestation. To the right, there is a huge area being cleared for growing Soya beans. This crop is then distributed worldwide mainly as animal feed. Towards the lower centre one can find an illegal farmer, busy planting palms for the palm oil trade. A number of animals are trying to dissuade him; a mouse ...

Every year thousands of tourists flock to Easter Island to see its famous monumental sculptures. But what was once a vital source of income for the tiny Polynesian island is now threatening its very existence. As outsiders drain its resources Easter Island has become a living example of what can happen to a human civilisation when deforestation gets out of control. Al Jazeera's Lucia Newman has this report from Easter Island.
Australia suffers from severe deforestation, along with countries like Brazil and Indonesia. In Tasmania, forests have been shrinking steadily over the past 50 years due to the state's billion-dollar timber industry. But besides depleting the forest itself, logging also releases significant levels of carbon into the atmostphere. Al Jazeera's Tony Birtley travelled to the Tasmanian forest, at the centre of the debate between the industry and the environmentalists.

They talk to us and if we listen, we can hear them" - Arapaho "What is man without the beast? If the beast were gone, man would die from great loneliness of spirit. Once considered the green lungs of Asia, Borneo now provides a lucrative home for palm oil growers and timber corporations. According to the World Wildlife Fund, the rate of environmental destruction in Borneo is faster than in the Amazon. In the second of a three-part series, Al Jazeera's Tony Birtley investigates the role of politics in the growth of palm oil plantations and timber concessions.
