May 12, 2010: I can't believe how loyal these eagles are to their nest and one remaining egg. Surely, it is past the time when we can expect this egg to hatch. NatureWatch Eagle Cam www.fs.fed.us
May 10, 2010: A lot of bad luck for these eagles, Cascade and Lady Odell, who are so loyal to their nest. There have been snow storms in March and April. I believe the eggs were laid on March 24 and 27. On May 9, Cascade removed a broken egg, so there is only one left. The chance of that egg hatching is slim -- too much time has gone by. But we can hope. See the nest completely covered in snow on April 2, 2010: www.youtube.com NatureWatch Eagle Cam www.fs.fed.us

This is from a live streaming video of a Bald Eagle's nest in the Deschutes National Forest in Oregon. It shows the female, Lady Odell, returning to the nest relieving the father, Cascade. You can find this live cam at www.fs.fed.us/outdoors/naturewatch/eaglecam.html I am sorry it is from my Canon and not recorded to RealPlayer. For some reason my computer won't record to RealPlayer from QuickTime. But I hope you enjoy it anyway. It is mid-April and starting to snow yet again.

In the fall of 2003 two video cameras were placed in the nest by Phil Allen and Tim Brown (Installation Contractors) under the direction of Don Virgovic If you ever wanted to see a bald eagle develop from birth until flight, you now have the a perfect opportunity. Following an unsuccessful year last year, there is a new life for a bald eagle pair, Cascade and Lady Odell, located high in the Cascades of the Deschutes National Forest in Oregon. The eagles were successful battling the late snow and cold to produce an offspring. The eaglet starting working itself free of its shell around 7 am on May 15, 2009 and was confirmed out at 5:30 with video at 3:30 pm by the faithful watchers at Maine Bald Eagle Cam Discussion Forum. The newly hatched eaglet, Pengra Crescent Odell, is estimated at 3 ounces and 5 inches long. Pengra is covered with soft downy feathers and will depend entirely on its parents for food, warmth, and protection from predators. The youngster is the most recent successful hatch of this pair. The last successfully raised chick was in 2006. The name comes from historical figures and place names in the area. Willamette Pass was originally named Pengra Pass after the Oregon State Surveyor General who surveyed the routes between eastern and western Oregon in 1865 and advocated a railroad crossing the Cascade summit at the pass that bears his name. Newberry National Volcanic Monument was designated on November 5, 1990 to protect the area around the Newberry Volcano in the United States. It was created within the boundaries of the Deschutes National Forest and is managed by the US Forest Service. It includes 50000 acres (20000 ha) of lakes, lava flows, and spectacular geologic features in central Oregon. The highest point within the Monument is the summit Paulina Peak 7985 ft, (2434 m), with views of the Oregon Cascades and the high desert. Paulina Peak may be accessed by road during the summer months, and as the road is both steep and rough, with hairpin turns towards the summit, trailers or long vehicles are discouraged. The summit area of Newberry Volcano holds two alpine lakes full of trout, East Lake and Paulina Lake. The park is also home to Lava River Cave, Oregon's longest known lava tube, just south of Bend. The cave is easily accessed by US Highway 97 and may be explored by lantern.[2] Lava Butte, a 500-foot cinder cone, is located next to US Highway 97 south of Bend, next to the Lava Lands Visitor Center. The visitor center is under renovation, and is open during the summer until 5:00pm. The monument also features a Lava Cast Forest, which is accessible via a 9 mile dirt road from US Highway 97. The Big Obsidian Flow, created 1300 years ago, covers 700 acres. The black, shiny obsidian field, is easily accessible from good roads within the caldera, or a trail that traverses the flow.
The former Lava Cast Forest Geological Area (now part of the Newberry National Volcanic Monument) was established by the Forest Service in 1942. The geological area was established to protect the many lava trees and tree molds which occur in the area. The various flows of the Lava Cast Forest were all erupted from the Northwest Rift Zone of Newberry Volcano. There is a one mile paved self guided interpretive trail with barrier free access. The trail loops through an area where hot molten lava erupted from the northwest flank of Newberry Volcano and engulfed a forest here 7000 years ago. The landscape now includes the "casts" or molds, of these ancient trees. Colonizing plants, such as delicate penstemon flowers and Indian paintbrush, have taken root in the rocky soil. Ponderosa pine trees have re-established themselves and flourished as well, so that the landscape now includes a blend of the past and the present.
East Lake is one of the twin lakes that occupy part of the Newberry Crater or caldera in Central Oregon, United States. It is located in the Deschutes National Forest near the city of La Pine. The caldera was formed over 500000 years ago from volcanic eruptions. East Lake's water comes from snow melt, rain fall, and hot springs only. The average depth is 67 feet (20 m), 180 feet at the deepest point, and covers 1044 acres (4.22 km2). East Lake is about 50 feet (15 m) higher in elevation and is to the east of its twin, Paulina Lake.East Lake has two main camping grounds along the lake shore as well as East Lake Resort. The resort has cabins and boats for rent as well as a general store. The lake offers fishing for brown trout and rainbow trout. The lake is stocked with sockeye salmon (Kokanee) and Atlantic salmon.

Male Eagle, Cascade, delivers a fish to his Deschutes nest. As soon as the fish arrives, Cascade's female partner, Eagle Lady Odell, quickly hides the whole fish in her mouth. Once Cascade leaves the nest, Lady Odell releases the fish for their offspring, Pengra Crescent Odell. Did Cascade know what happened to his fish? Deschutes National Forest, Oregon: 12 Jul 2009, 7:40 am PDT.
Eaglet, Pengra Crescent Odell, gets a little snippy with her Mom, Lady Odell, over a fish. Pengra is at the age where her instinct tells her to mantle food. Being selfish with food is a survival skill that Pengra will need after she fledges from the nest. Adult parents need to be cautious on the nest during this stage of the youngster's development. Deschutes National Forest, Oregon: 12 Jul 2009, 7:58 am PDT.
Deschutes National Forest is home to Eagle Parents Cascade, Lady Odell and their offspring, Pengra Crescent Odell. On the morning of 2 Jul 2009, Eagle Parent delivers breakfast to Pengra Crescent. A bronze "peak finder" is located at the top of the structure. The Civilian Conservation Corps, Camp F-23 of Company 927, built the observatory from lava rock during the Great Depression. It is named after Dee Wright, the foreman in charge of the Camp. Since its completion in 1935, the observatory has been a favorite attraction for thousands of visitors each summer.
