Simulation of Game 5 of Conference Finals: Detroit vs. Chicago. Who will win this exciting series and move on to the NHL Conference Finals?
This is a departure from my normal bowling material. The date was April 13, 1978. Back then, prior to the quarterfinals, there was a preliminary round where there were 4 best of three series to move on. This was the first playoffs the Wings had been involved in since 1970. This recording was from game 2 between Detroit and Atlanta (before the Flames moved to Calgary) and was played at Olympia Stadium. When this game was played, I was 12 years old, and I used to put my tape recorder up to the radio to make recordings. This was broadcast on WJR, and the announcers were Bruce Martin and Sid Abel. I was hoping to capture a goal with the crowd going nuts. We join the game with the Wings down by 1 goal. I recently digitized this, and wanted to share it with all of you. Unfortunately, the Red Wings run that year was short lived. After closing out the series in 2 games, the Wings moved on to meet Montreal, where they lost 4 games to 1, with the only victory for the Wings coming at the Forum. The Canadians went on to win the Stanley Cup that year. In 1978, the Wings were 32-34-14 in the Norris Division, 51 points behind Montreal. After the Wings playoff run in 1978, it would be 6 long years until 1984 before they qualifed again for the playoffs. Except for 1986 and 1990, they've been in the playoffs each and every year since, and the rest is history.

In an era when most hockey enthusiasts follow the on-ice exploits of their heroes on the radio, Montreal Canadiens fans become the first to see their team play a game on television. On Oct. 11, 1952, popular Quebec media personality René Lecavalier is behind the mike for Canada's first televised National Hockey League contest. In this retrospective clip, the inaugural edition of La Soirée du Hockey (the French-language equivalent of Hockey Night In Canada) features the Habs taking on the visiting Detroit Red Wings at the Montreal Forum. • This season opener was a particularly contentious match, as the Red Wings swept the Canadiens in four straight games during the previous season's finals to capture the Stanley Cup. The game also pitted the nhl's two biggest names against each other: Montreal's Maurice Richard and Detroit's Gordie Howe. • Television sets were prohibitively expensive for most Canadians in 1952 (only 10 per cent of households had one), so most of those watching at home were well-heeled enough to have attended Canadiens games in person. • The Canadiens went on to win the game 2-1, bolstering many fans' positive impressions of the groundbreaking experiment. • English Canada got its first glimpse of televised NHL hockey three weeks later. Foster Hewitt ascended the Maple Leaf Gardens catwalk in Toronto to provide play-by-play for the final two periods of a match between the Leafs and the Boston Bruins.
