Pacquiao opts for basketball over sparring 09/29/2010 | 12:21 AM Sparring will have to wait a while. It's basketball for now for Manny Pacquiao. The 31-year-old boxing champion was spared from undergoing his first sparring session in training camp at Baguio City on Tuesday after playing a ballgame just the night before at the top court of the Cooyesan Hotel. Pacquiao engaged Baguio-based players in a loose but highly-competitive game, which foreign sparmates Glen Tapia and Michael Medina also joined. Although reluctant at first about Pacquiao playing the game while in training, Freddie Roach has since softened up and relented. "As long as he works hard at the gym, I'll have no problem with that," said the celebrated trainer. The congressman from the lone province of Sarangani said playing basketball while in training for a big fight is a staple of his busy timetable. He added that the game is a sort of therapy for him. "Basketball `yung pampa-relax ko sa training," said Pacquiao, who co-owns the MP GenSan Warriors basketball team seeing action in the Tournament of the Philippines, a joint league co-organized by the Philippine Basketball League and Liga Pilipinas. Pacquiao was later allowed to skip his morning roadwork following the night of playing basketball. Then, sparring was called off too, later in the day. Roach reset the start of the sparring session to Thursday. But the two of them went hard at the mitts during their afternoon training, going for 11 solid rounds ...

Miao Lijie, a former WNBA player, ended the third quarter with an unbelievable back-field three-pointer at the buzz, helping China to a 74-43 lead and making the fourth quarter junk time. "The Asian Games is part of our journey to Beijing (Olympic Games)," said Thomas Maher, head coach of the Chinese team. "I have never seen a team younger than us. I think we still have to improve in many ways." Chinese Taipei, making its first appearance in an Asian Games final, trailed by just three points in the first quarter, but was well beaten from the second half. "We had thought of the loss, but never thought of such a big loss," said Chien Wei Chuan, captain of the Chinese Taipei team, which was edged by four points in their last meet in the final of the 2005 East Asian Games. Lin Hung Ling-yao, coach of the Chinese Taipei team, expressed her great disappointment. "It's really discouraging," she said. "I don't think we have such a big gap with the Chinese team." "My team didn't perform very well. Chiang Feng Chun committed three fouls at the early part of the first quarter, which made us very passive in the inside," she added. The Chinese center duo Chen ...
