How to remove a flywheel from a Briggs and Stratton small engine off a Craftsman mulching lawn mower. This guy charges 18 bucks for flywheel shaft key replacement and was kind enough to let me record the process. What you don't see in the video is that he ended up damaging the nut on the shaft, which seems expendable if all you need to do is replace it. I've concluded that this is the procedure practiced by almost all the experts and all of them claim if done right you will not damage the flywheel. If you're going to try this yourself you need a long, hard, screwdriver pry bar, a heavy mini sledge hammer, and someone to help apply pressure on the opposite end your prying up while pounding as in the video. Also plan on having a replacement flywheel nut. You don't see it in the video, but he takes off some metal cup looking thing from the top of the flywheel shaft and reinstalls the nut so that it's exactly on the top. I'm thinking this nut is what protects the actual flywheel shaft from being damaged from the hammer pounding. The metal of the threads in the nut are softer than the flywheel shaft and therefore give out and are prone to damage during this procedure. A good Craftsman pry bar will run you 20 bucks and the mini sledge should be about the same price. Good Luck.
This is my brand new briggs and stratton engine, 900 intek series. this engine features, low oil shutdown, cast iron sleeve, and its a intek series with ohv. This is the first time this engine has ever fired up. also ignore the loud pounding, clanking, hitting noise you hear, its just the motor has alot of torque that it hits the floor pretty hard if i don't hold it down, but it wont be that noisy at all!!! once i get it on my go kart. Then ill make a video of installing it to the kart and running it and driving it.

I know I mentioned the scott's mower being made by Murray. I've been getting mixed messages so please don't hate on me if I'm wrong. I know the Tecumseh engine was manufactured for Murray but I don't know if that means the mower is made by them.

Don't know much about it besides the fact it's newer then an '82 and has sat for some years.
There was a contest not so long ago that I missed getting into because I was down from surgery, so I took today to show you guys one of my slow idle engines. I can get all but one to idle like this one, but I don't like letting them idle so low for too long for fear the top end will dry out. Since these are splash type oil engines, they don't like low idle very much.
This experimental opposed design using Briggs & Stratton engines, is what is called an opposed engine, since there is 2 pistons with a crankshaft at each end. The crankshafts are chained together to keep them synchronized with each other. I varied from the true opposed design by staggering the cylinders so that their centerlines don't line up now. This allowed me to create more of an over-head valve design, out of 2 Flatheads. I am working on a true opposed type 2 cycle, supercharged engine,based on the Junkers Jumo 205, but it is a long ways away yet. Some of the unusual noise is the flywheels rubbing on the cooling shroud, it just wants to rub for some reason :( With about 9:1 compression, this is a beast to start, as a second person is required to hold it down. It runs well, and usually starts on the first pull. The throttle is set about 40% open, as the 1 carburator is fussy about feeding twice the engine it was designed for, so I throttle it with my hand on the vid. The whole set-up weighs in at about 50lb, it is an awkward beast to lift around due to its shape and size.
Here is the Monosoupape type 4 stroke engine that I put back together. This engine operating cycle was developed during WW1 for use in Rotary type engines (the whole engine block rotated along with the propellor, so the engine itself acted as a flywheel. The crankshaft was bolted to the airplane, and didn't rotate, the crankshaft was hollow, and the gas-air mixture was feed to the engine thru the hollow crankshaft.) My adaptation of this engine concept uses both existing valves as exhaust, with inlet ports in the cylinder that are uncovered by the piston close to the bottom of the stroke. I also changed it so that the intake ports connect to the original intake manifold, which is blocked off near where it bolts to the block. It is ground out to allow the intake valve to exhaust outwards, while the remaining part of the manifold mount holds the intake manifold in place, to allow the carb and gastank to remain in their original location. The modified operating cycle of this engine is described in my other vid about the monosoupape. My engine has oil in the crankcase, and has run about 10 minutes straight, and cut grass. It smokes badly due to a scratched cylinder, and the inlet ports could be a contributing factor. It can be throttled to a certain extent, but always needs at least 1/2 choke to run rich enough. I Always use Briggs and Stratton engines, as I don't need any unexpected holes in the block due to a broken connecting rod, as might happen when using other un-named ...
