(July 9, 2010) If you must experience a devastating industrial accident, pray you live in a rich and powerful country. Americans are justifiably angry, but they have 24-hour tar ball removal, a hotline for oiled birds, and a 20 billion dollar compensation fund. In Bhopal, India, tens of thousands were killed 25 years ago when toxic gas escaped from a factory run by the US company Union Carbide. The compensation was meager, the plant is still oozing toxic waste, and the first trials, which took place this year, found executives guilty and handed out 2-year sentences. The American CEO skipped bail and lives comfortably in the US Is suffering, justice and executive accountability different in a rich country than a poor one? The Pick Dow Chemical (NYSE: DOW): On Jan. 5, Mad Money host Jim Cramer said, While DOW made a mistake by overpaying for Rohm & Haas, the company has done everything right since then. DOW shares were trading around $31.80 at the time of this episode, up from $31 back in January. Dow Chemical (NYSE:DOW) reported a fiscal first quarter profit of $466 million, or $0.41 per share, up from $24 million, or $0.03 per share. Excluding one-time items, the company earned $0.43 per share. Revenues rose 48% year-over-year to $13.42 billion, up from $9.04 billion. Sales climbed 27% in North America and 35% in Europe, Middle East and Africa. Analysts on average expect earnings of $0.29 per share on revenues of $12.86 billion. Chairman and CEO Andrew N. Liveris said, "The earnings power of Dow's new portfolio was evident this quarter with our robust sales growth driven by significant volume and price increases in all geographic areas, with notable improvements in North America and Europe. When combined with broad-based EBITDA margin expansion and record equity earnings, this enabled us to achieve greatly improved operating results."
Dow Chemical is a leader in the production of plastics, chemicals, hydrocarbons, and agrochemicals. The largest chemical company in the US and #2 worldwide (ahead of ExxonMobil and behind BASF), Dow also makes performance plastics (engineering plastics, polyurethanes, and materials for Dow Automotive). Other products include materials for packaging (such as its Styrofoam brand insulation), fibers, and films, as well as performance chemicals like acrylic acid. The company also manufactures commodity chemicals (chlor-alkalies and glycols) and agrochemicals. Its Hydrocarbons and Energy unit makes olefins and aromatics, raw materials for other chemicals. Dow also owns half of silicone products maker Dow Corning.
With a number of chemical firms preparing to release earnings in the oncoming weeks, including Dow Chemical (NYSE:DOW) and Huntsman Corporation (NYSE:HUN), Citigroup Equity Research issued a note to clients Thursday saying they see anecdotal evidence of restocking. Citi analyst PJ Juvekar said they believe "restocking has a long way to go with the exception of China, which may be at normal inventory levels. US ethylene inventory days are expected to reach a record low of ~3 days this month, according to CMAI. Recent discussions with converters lead us to believe that inventories in the supply chain still remain low." Citigroup expects raw material costs to dominate discussions on second quarter guidance as prices for oil and oil derivatives increase. Companies that are more exposed to oil such as Lubrizol Corporation (NYSE:LZ), Sherwin-Wililams Company (NYSE:SHW), The Valspar Corporation (NYSE:VAL), and Huntsman Corporation (NYSE:HUN) may find it difficult to boost prices. Juvekar concluded, "We are generally raising 1Q and FY10 estimates for specialty and commodity names. We prefer early cyclicals and beneficiaries of cheap gas -DOW, PPG, PX, and AGU - and select specialties like ALB, ECL, and NLC."

My favorite part from the documentary: The Yes Men Fix the World. The Yes Men Fix the World (2009) is a documentary film about the culture jamming exploits of The Yes Men. The film premiered in New York City and Los Angeles on October 23, 2009 and in other US cities beginning on October 30. After first appearing at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah. The Yes Men are a group of culture jamming activists who practice what they call "identity correction" by pretending to be powerful people and spokespersons for prominent organizations. From their offices in Milwaukee, they create and maintain fake websites similar to ones they want to spoof, and then they accept invitations received on their websites to appear at conferences, symposia, and TV shows. They express the idea that corporations and governmental organizations often act in dehumanizing ways toward the public. Elaborate props are sometimes part of the ruse, as shown in their 2003 DVD release The Yes Men. Their method is often satire: posing as corporate or government spokespeople, they often make shocking comments which they contend are an honest rendering of the organization's ideology which is usually hidden by spin, or extrapolate what they feel is the organization's ideology in a 'reductio ad absurdum' to come out with outrageous conclusions, such as that it should be possible to sell your vote or that the poor should eat recycled human waste. On most occasions no shock or anger is registered in the ...
