The suspected drug dealers allegedly opened fire on the undercover officers, and a shootout reportedly followed. The officers were taken to St. Joseph's Hospital -- one has since died and the remaining two are in critical and stable conditions, respectively. Two suspects were apparently killed in the gunfire exchange, two were hospitalized with gunshot wounds, and two are in custody. The suspects that survive will be arrested once they are released from the hospital. A Phoenix Police Drug Task Force was nearby during the undercover drug deal for backup, and they made it to the scene almost immediately. Phoenix Police have blocked off the area, set up a command center and the investigation is ongoing. Police say it is not unusual for a team of police officers to work independently in another jurisdiction. No names have been released. February 8, 1988 Alfonse Marcello D'Amato (born August 1, 1937) is an American lawyer and former New York politician. A Republican, he served as United States Senator from New York from 1981 to 1999. Despite being a rather obscure candidate, he defeated incumbent Sen. Jacob Javits by 56% to 44% in the 1980 Republican primary election, after Javits' 1979 diagnosis of generally fatal amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Javits nevertheless pursued the seat on the Liberal Party ticket, splitting the left-wing vote in ordinarily liberal New York with Democratic Congresswoman Elizabeth Holtzman and leading to D'Amato's 45% plurality victory. D'Amato drew the nickname Senator Pothole for his delivery of "constituent services," helping citizens with their individual cases. While some New Yorkers meant the nickname as a pejorative, many others saw it as a positive affirmation of his attention to getting things done. Senator D'Amato also holds the record for the second and seventh longest filibusters ever recorded in the United States Senate. He is remembered for his unique and rather comical filibusters. In 1986, a filibuster he conducted against a military bill lasted 23 hours, 30 minutes and he was known for reading the District of Columbia phone book during a filibuster. Easter morning at approximately 2:10 am, dispatch received a call from a driver that was in pursuit of another vehicle. The caller claimed that he had given someone $400.00 in exchange for illegal narcotics. Instead of handing over the narcotics, the alleged pill dealer drove off and headed east on I-10 in a green Honda Prelude. Three Madison County Sheriffs Deputies waited at SR 53 and I-10 one on the eastbound exit ramp and two on the eastbound entrance ramp. Moments later, the pill poppers parade passed Officer David Myers who immediately began pursuit, followed by Officers Cpl. Bobby Boatwright and Scott Albritton. Officer Myers then initiated the traffic stop. The caller, driving a Lexus SUV from Tennessee, stated that he tried to make an illegal purchase of pain killers from one of the two occupants of the Honda. He said he knew them through a friend and met them for the transaction. He stated that the moment he handed over the money, the Honda drove away and the chase began. According to the driver of the Lexus, he was one of nine young people visiting Panama City for spring break and needed to return due to having their transportation home. The occupants of the Honda eventually admitted to taking $400.00 from the other driver and not producing any drugs. Both vehicles were seized and all occupants were taken to the Madison County Jail for conspiracy to distribute and/or purchase a controlled substance (felony).
