Following the results and comments I made above, I found an interesting and easy to read article in which some of the same concerns are shared and openly discussed.
In what I find to be a useful guide based on their experience, Davis and Lindsay ask “How can we teach digital citizenship when the digital landscape is changing so rapidly?”
They start by suggesting that as teachers and facilitators we should research and be aware of technological trends and evolution. In order to connect to your students you must first “be” connected yourself and understand how technology works.
You should start by monitoring the uses of technology more locally before moving to broader projects and, when possible, try to work in teams and learn from others.
You should carefully plan your projects without being afraid of trying different thinks, always keeping an open mind.
It is important to empower student-centered learning, listen to your students and trust them by, for example, giving them administrative rights within your projects.
Even though I agree with all these ideas, this last part is very tricky. We seem to know what to do, but the problem is how. Customization may be one of the answers in the sense that it can empower students and make them more responsible for managing their learning, however, it also raises questions on how to combine that with the fact that you have to “meet standards”.
And then there’s the time issue. All these changes take time and it can be a while until we see actual results.
Again, this is a complex topic. I’m looking forward for your opinions. I anticipate a very fertile discussion ☺

Hi everyone,
I am back with my allusion to McLuhan's global village. Today in my visit to the library I discovered a very interesting book Information Technology and Societal Development by Andrew Targowski. Targowski (2009) identifies an Electronic Global Citizen (EGC) which is I guess the same with GDC we are talking about. He defines electronic global citizen as "a citizen of the Electronic Global Village, who is certainly an enlightened person, ready for dialogue and to share his vision and opportunities with others, respecting diversity, seeing the planet from above as one world, one civilization and wanting to learn about it to protect it as long as possible" (p. 307). Moreover, he postulates that the development of EGC would make best schools, teachers and courses available to all students regardless of geography, distance, resources or disability (p. 307). I found especially his prediction valuable because with the development of GDC, people can be encouraged to contribute to open learing environments which will eventually contribute to collective global intelligence. This is perhaps what we need to do as online learners and teachers. Being a part of online learning community will give us, learners, a chance for dialogue which enables us to share ideas, visions and knowledge with people from diverse backgrounds and different places. As for our roles as teachers, we should perhaps introduce our students to the digital community of learning since I believe the cyber space is only a place to socialize for many students. Personally I believe many students are already global digital citizens, but they have not yet discovered the digital world's potential in creting a learning community where the can learn and help people learn.
As for my score my level is 4, howeverI have also discovered that I need to improve my digital instruction practice and involve in more global projects.
Regards,
Ela

Hello Everyone.
Level 4
Even though I try to contribute to local and global communities, going through my results I find that there is still work to do, namely when it comes to fostering online communities when working with my students. In spite of the institutional and structural constraints, there is a lot teachers can do working with their own students, helping them become more competent global citizens (thus helping themselves!).
Being a language teacher there are also many cultural issues that should be addresses. But I'll come back to that later :)

Hi everybody,
I took the survey yesterday, but I cannot see my results. I have checked the link I have recorded and the one that is here, but the last result presented in that list is in 2011. Am I checking a wrong link?
As for Global Citizen roles, that reminded me of McLuhan's global village. I will be back to this topic again :)

Hi,
I just finish the quiz and here´s my score - Level 4!
I have participated in several European studies related to the use of ICT in teaching and learning. I am currently working in in project SMILE (http://leedu.eun.org/web/smile)
Although I create, develop and try to participate in global learning, cultural issues, including the language, is certainly a constraint in the sense that use Portuguese language. Although Portuguese is the third most spoken language in the world the truth is that English the LANGUAGE.
I will return to this topic later (Still recovering from assignment 3...)

The tendency to confuse these terms should be stemming from their clear and close relationship as well as their multiple meanings. For example when I log in Nabble discussion board, I see green buttons/lights on next to people’s names and realize that they are online in Nabble board just like me; this should be awareness. I think we can also talk about connectedness in this scenario though there’s not sharing. However, I don’t think I would feel socially present in such a situation. Sometimes, on the other hand, I do not see anyone online, read posts asynchronously but still feel connected. Discussing “the interconnection” among social presence, awareness and connectedness, Rettie (2003) suggests the following figure to explain the differences:

Even though we are all struggling to get our Assignment done, I couldn't help trying to answer your question. Or at least a part of it...
Presence and Awareness are different in the sense one is mode immediate and recognizable than the other (Presence).
Awareness implies understanding (yourself and others) and is harder to observe and "measure".
I found this article that I would like to share with you. I've only read through it very quickly but is with re-reading tomorrow, after finishing the work at hand. :)

I agree with Fátima when she says it's complex.
Because it involves people, relationships and intimacy it is definitely a very challenging area. I believe that in order to better understand the concept we must carry out multidisciplinary studies that combine not only researchers in the area of Education and Technology but also Psychology, Sociology and even linguists (considering the role discourse analysis can play in this setting).
This kind of study is very demanding and hard to put together. :)

Thanks for your contributions to the theory of social presence! While I was reading your postings, I noticed that there are a few concepts/words caught my attentions: Presence, Awareness, Connectedness, Social Presence, & Social Interaction. It seems we use them interchangeably. Are they the same or different? Let’s use this question to help us to gain better understanding in social presence since many of you have a great deal of interests in this topic.
This is a tough question. Do your best to answer it to see you are able to justify it!

Hi,
Given the complexity of all the aspects involving social presence, seiing inside and outside the online context, I think that this is a very difficult field...
It is a matter which, besides being very complicated (involve many variables to be studied) is also complex (as interconnects those variables)
What do you think of this?

Hi
I believe social presence is not too complicated to study, but it is very comprehensive as you have just stated, and there are several variables that affect online social presence. As far as I have read, there are not many deviant definitions od social presence, however, some address social presence for its own sake whereas some other include especially teacher presence as a defining factor. I guess online presence is dynamic as the same student may be socially present in one course whereas the same student may not feel socially present depending on some factors such as the perceived socila presence of peers, teacher presence, instructional design or the course content in another course. Because the variables are so varied a study addressing social presence has to be quite comprehensive if not necessarily complicated,

Ela

That late bird badge is mine!!! At least for this particular topicAnd you should all get "special sharing badges" for the resources you have posted.
I must say this has probably been the hardest concept to define so far. Maybe because it is such a familiar term... The idea that "the overall goal for creating social presence in any learning environment, whether it be online or face-to-face, is to create a level of comfort in which people feel at ease around the instructor and the other participants" is easy to understand but hard to explain.
It's all very subjective and relative. What is comfortable for me, may not be comfortable for someone else.
That being said, I definitely need to keep reading... :)

Sandra, that´s not fair!!! Minory report is definitely one good example!
As professor Chi points, the distinction between virtual environments (VE) and AR, sometimes is not very clearly. For instance, the google´s project Glass in one very good examples of AR. On the other hand, second life is a excellent example of VE.

Chih,
Bibeau (2001, as cited in Aragon, 2003, p.57) states that "teaching and learning functions are inherently
social endeavors" and that is what makes social aspects significant for online learning. Tu (2002) points out that "social presence is a dynamic variable based upon the user’s perception and the characteristics of the medium." Therefore, the degree of social presence is subject to subjective assessment.
With regard to the definitions "social presence", Tu and McIsaac (2002) as “a measure of the feeling of community that a learner experiences in an online environment” (p.131). Gunawardena and Zittle (1997) simply define social presence as “the degree to which a person is perceived as a ‘real person’ in mediated communication” (p. 9). Suggesting that social presence can be created in any learning environment, "whether it be online or face-to-face", Aragon (2003) contends that "the overall goal for creating social presence.. is to create a level of comfort in which people feel at ease around the instructor and the other participants" (p.60). I can't confidently argue that online social presence is defined differently, but obviously authors may be emphasizing one aspect more. For example, while Tu and McIsaac (2002) mentions "community", Aragon (2003) highlights "comfort".
On the other hand, when I started to read about Social Presence I began to wonder its relationship with "Transactional Distance" (which I found more complicated than social presence itself) and to think "less TA, more SP". Then I met Rovai's (2001, as cited in Aragon, 2003, p. 57) view on the issue and felt this is the summary of the issue:
..... recent thinking views social presence asone variable among many that
contributes to building a sense of community among learners at a distance.
Rovai (2001) presents a model of community that, in addition to social
presence, suggests that student-instructor ratio, transactional distance,
instructor immediacy, lurking, social equality, collaborative learning, group
facilitation, and self-directed learning all have an impact on the sense of community
within online environments.
PS. I'd like to be awarded a "Late Bird Badge" for the consistency I performed in engaging lateAragon, S.r. (2003). Creating social presence in online environments. I remember the time I was presenting an Assignment about AR with Fátima for one of our courses. In order to make the concept clear to people attending, we gave lots of examples we had seen in Science fiction movies like "The Terminator" and "Minority Report". This is another case of life imitating art...
Keeping up with the gaming strategies here's a challenge: what other movies showing examples of AR can you think of?

In this recent article, discussing the potential of AR in Education, Billinghurts states that "AR experiences should be used to enhance traditional teaching rather than replace it".
This raises some interesting questions. On the one hand, I don't believe in this idea that technology will simply replace the so-called traditional learning environments. It's a bit like saying ebooks will completely replace books or that we won't have newspapers (printed in actual paper) in the near future. As I see it there is room for different formats and even though technology keeps changing the way we perceive reality and how we interact with it, that's evolution, rather than "replacement".
On the other hand, there are many educational fields in which AR can play a pivotal role, like in the military or medicine.
And then there's another question: having all these media and possibilities, will it even be possible to learn or teach "traditionally"? Are AR and other developments enhancing the way we learn or completely changing it?

I'm not really sure we can separate the real and the virtual world when discussing AR. There’s a “seamlessly blend” between the two.
As for its use in Education, it can help understand complex concepts and phenomena and set contextual relationships between subjects, making it possible for users/students to physical manipulate objects and to experiment. It’s dynamic and lives on this real/virtual dichotomy.

Chih,
I must say I'm impressed by the immediacy of your feedback as usual. I see what you mean by "complicated"; at least, I think, this is what Tu&McIsaac (2003) assert by saying "social presence is much more complicated than previously imagined" .
