Nearly 200 cancer patients, survivors, caregivers and peers submitted essays to this year's contest nominating their oncology nurses who have demonstrated exceptional compassion, expertise and commitment in their patients' fight against cancer. This year's winner, Dorothy Wahrman, RN, OCN, (bit.ly was awarded the Extraordinary Healer Award in front of hundreds of her peers. Nominated by Valerie Bosselman, Wahrman cared for Valerie's daughter, Megan, who lost her battle with adrenal cortical carcinoma. Wahrman was described in the winning essay as "the most remarkable woman," whose "ability to sense the every need of patient and family was the most beautiful and natural part of her character." Another post from a nursing home program in Denton. Md on 8-9-07, and an example of my approach to stride piano. Now, how do I say this? In this nursing home/senior citizen "realm", there is much amateur(ish) "entertainment". For a variety of reasons (including activity budgets that are too often shamefully inadequate) professional (quality) presenters are sometimes hard to find. In my case, since the time of understanding that my task as a performing musician is to connect with and uplift those around me - and subsequently pursuing opportunities and a certification as a Music Therapist (MT-BC), I see these situations as a God-directed opportunity and privilege, and find ways to make it work. Although I present many programs and activities, and have maintained relationships/contracts with dozens of facilities over the last 14 years (of music therapy related work), I still don't see myself as (essentially) anything other than a performing musician; blessed with an extraordinary number of opportunities to make connections with those around me. In the days surrounding this little event (one of several that day), I had opportunities to perform solo in public concert (in a church), at a 3-day jazz festival, in a casino-hotel, in a rhythm section, on the concert stage, as an accompanist, and still more.
