Frequent Quakes Jolt Iran on Thursday TEHRAN (FNA)- Several tremors jolted the town of Ashkanan in Fars province in Southern Iran on Thursday. A report by the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University said that the slight tremors measured 4.1 and 4.2 on the Richter scale. The Seismological center of Fars province affiliated to the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University registered the main quake at 12:07 hours local time (0737GMT). The epicenter of the main quake was located in an area 53.6 degrees in longitude and 27.2 degrees in latitude. There are yet no reports on the number of possible casualties or damage to properties by the quake. Iran sits astride several major faults in the earth's crust, and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating. The worst in recent times hit Bam in southeastern Kerman province in December 2003, killing 31000 people - about a quarter of its population - and destroying the city's ancient mud-built citadel. The deadliest quake in the country was in June 1990 and measured 7.7 on the Richter scale. About 37000 people were killed and more than 100000 injured in the northwestern provinces of Gilan and Zanjan. It devastated 27 towns and about 1870 villages. Tehran alone sits on two major fault lines, and the capital's 14 million residents fear a major quake. The last deadly quake in Iran happened on Sept. 10, 2008 when a magnitude-6.1 earthquake killed at least 7 people and injured almost 47 more in the southern ...

Magnitude 5.6 Earthquake Shakes Cuba A magnitude 5.6 earthquake shook the island of Cuba on Saturday afternoon. There are no reports of major damage, but residents of Santiago de Cuba, about 37 miles from the earthquake's epicenter, reported the shaking to have been very strong. The quake, which occurred out at sea, was also felt in Baracoa, Cuba, and Abricots, Haiti. The epicenter was about 22 miles south of the US Guantánamo Bay compound. People ran screaming into the streets in light of recent earthquakes in Haiti and, most recently, Chile. The Cuba earthquake, yet another in the chain of numerous - and often devastating - earthquakes in the region appears to have produced only minor damaged, such as cracked walls, but no lives lost. Aftershocks were reported throughout the day yesterday, but they were of lower magnitude. Within the first three months of 2010, major earthquakes have struck Haiti (over 200000 lives lost) and Chile (close to 1000 lives lost) with major damage to both countries (Chile is now estimated at $30 billion.) Cuba is still recovering from the $10 billion economic loss created by the devastating hurricanes of 2008. The earthquakes appear to be extending their reach. Building designs are put to the test on the University of California-San Diego shake table, where engineers recreate destructive earthquakes to help make our structures safer and survivable. Jorge Ribas reports.
Chart of the Chile tsunami's travel time, released by the National Atmospheric and Oceanic Administration. Photograph: AFP/Getty Images The devastating earthquake that has struck Chile also caused a string of tsunamis across the region. Although the tsunamis weren't as strong as first feared, they also caused deaths and destruction: as many as 350 people had died in one Chilean coastal town, Constitución, which was hit first by the earthquake and then by a tsunami. Tsunami events are monitored around the globe by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the DART system of wave monitoring buoys. It initially warned of widespread huge waves - these warnings were downgraded - and the final list of tsunami events in different countries was published this morning. Feb.28, 2010 09:00 Eastern time. The day after Chili earthquake. Tsunami Alert was warning Hawaii. The waves are extremely high at the Coronado beach, San Diego, California, United State.
San Diego was the first point in the US to be subjected to the tsunami (hence it would receive the largest waves). A friend of mine visiting from out of town decided to brave the storm and check it out. We were doubtful that we'd see anything at all, but decided to head to Point Loma, a spit of land that extends furthest out into the ocean and overlooks San Diego. From our comfortable and scenic perch about 300ft above sea level, this video shows what we saw before and during the tsunami. We later checked the times with the ranger station, so what we saw coincided time-wise with the tsunami event. Fortunately, San Diego was spared. My commiserations to the victims of this latest earthquake in Chile.

New song played by Southtown Generals at Red Circle in downtown San Diego. This is from a benefit concert for Haiti earthquake victims performed on February 4, 2010.
I've never been more proud of my country then when hearing of the efforts of our country to assist the people of Haiti, following the earthquake which struck there. And knowing that the crew of this ship was the first Navy vessel to arrive off Port-au-Prince, and to think of all they did to help those suffering people...this video was a must to make. I am proud of these men and women, of this ship, and the others who have helped, and continue to help, such a devastated people, in Haiti. About this video: The USS Higgins returning to San Diego February, 2010. During this six month deployment, they'd been around the world; literally. As they were heading home to San Diego, the Haiti earthquake struck, and they rerouted to Port-au-Prince, to help the victims of this devastating quake. Now, they're home, two weeks later than originally scheduled, but with a successful round-the world deployment, in addition to 11 days of extensive humanitarian help accomplished on behalf of Haiti. Bravo Zulu, Higgins.
