A strong earthquake struck early Sunday near the northern Italian city of Camposanto, killing at least one person and knocking down a historic church bell in the region, authorities said. The 6.0-magnitude quake occurred just after 4 am (10 pm ET Saturday), 4 kilometers (2.4 miles) outside Camposanto, northwest of Bologna, according to the US Geological Survey said. Italy's Civil Protection Office said one person died and two were wounded in the neighboring town of St. Agostino, and there were reports of damage to the town's church. The church's historic bell was knocked down, authorities said. Details of the casualties were not immediately released. Authorities were still assessing possible damage in the region, the Civil Protection Office said. In January, the same area was struck by a 5.3-magnitude quake. On Tuesday, August 23, 2011, an earthquake registering 5.8 on the Richter scale occurred 84 miles southwest of Washington, DC, damaging the Washington Monument. The National Park Service has temporarily closed the Monument and is assessing the damage to it. This footage was recorded just prior to and during the quake. Here the ranger guides visitors down the stairs as per protocol. The ranger then returns to the 500 foot level to ensure that all visitors have been escorted out.

Surveillance security video from inside the Washington monument shows the moment when the August 23 earthquake happened, shaking the building and sending visitors running downstairs in panic. At the moment, The Washington Monument remains closed indefinitely to visitors because of damage sustained during last month's earthquake. Structural engineers have done a preliminary inspection inside the monument, where numerous cracks and chips were found after the 5.8-magnitude quake on 23 August 2011. Dozens of pieces of stone fell in the interior of the monument during and after the quake, and park service officials say they need to make sure the obelisk is safe before the public is allowed back inside.
