JAKARTA, Indonesia, 5 October 2009 Less than a week ago, the children of Padang, in Indonesia's West Sumatra province, were standing amidst the devastation of an earthquake that had destroyed buildings, caused massive landslides, blocked roads and shattered the water supply. They talked to aid workers of their fears: that more shocks would hit the town, that their homes if still standing would fall, that their lives would forever be changed for the worse. Today, they walk to school by the thousands. In three of Padang's schools, UNICEF has already delivered temporary classrooms in the form of school tents. For UNICEF Education Officer Amson Simbolon, the crowds of young people back in their schools, even if under canvas, are a reminder of the importance of quickly re-establishing routine for those affected by sudden emergencies. "These children are seeking reassurances, looking for comfort in the normal daily activities that they enjoyed before last week's quake," he said. "Bringing in school tents, and school equipment, is not just about re-starting education. It's about providing a new focus for these children, one which is not only on the destruction and loss that surrounds them." UNICEF is bringing 250 school tents into West Sumatra, along with School-in-a-Box kits, each providing basic classroom materials for about 80 students. Rescuers in Indonesia's West Java are battling to reach dozens of people believed to have been buried alive by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake. Nearly 50 people have been killed and about 5000 forced into shelter homes. Tremors from the epicentre off the coast of West Java were also felt hundreds of kilometres away in Jakarta, the capital. Al Jazeera's Step Vaessen reports from the town of Pangalengan, one of the worst-hit areas.

The focus of the quake was detected at 200 kilometers south of Jakarta and 63 km in depth. Houses in villages near the epicenter of the quake leveled. From the Department of Health announced that crews were sent to doctors in Tasikmalagia, near the epicenter of the quake in West Java. The Disaster Management Agency of Indonesia announced that 5000 people were forced to flee their homes. Initially the United States Geological Survey said the quake was magnitude 7.4 on the Richter scale, but then revised downward its assessment by referring to Richter 7. The Indonesian seismological agency spoke of 7.3 Richter. Originally issued tsunami warning in the Indian Ocean, which was subsequently lifted. Representative Office of the earthquake in Indonesia said, however, that changes in sea level, indicating that there was a small tsunami. The quake was felt up to Jakarta, where office buildings and shopping malls were evacuated.

A powerful earthquake rattled Indonesia's main island of Java on Wednesday, shaking buildings in the capital Jakarta. Hundreds of residents evacuated from their high rise office buildings after feeling the tremors. Jakarta residents spoke of their experience. "I was in the training room when I felt everything swinging, then we rushed out of the office." "The air conditioner in my room went off-- I was on the 20th floor." There were reports of damage in Tasikmalaya near the epicentre of the quake in West Java and in a nearby city Bandung. Local tsunami warnings were issued for coastal areas within several hundred kilometers of the quake's epicentre soon after it struck, but were withdrawn shortly after. Indonesia's seismology agency put the magnitude at 7.3. Officials say there have been no disruptions to power supplies, and refineries in the area have not been affected.
