An independent production celebrating the 2002 total solar eclipse that passed over South Australia. This documentary is comprised of more than 30 interviews with eclipse chasers, a live CSIRO broadcast from the path of totality, footage of the eclipse itself and animations explaining some of the science behind a total eclipse of the sun. The Path of Totality is fast paced and the wide variety of characters interviewed provide elements of humour, drama and excitement. A Starkey production www.starkey.net.au
A solar eclipse that reduced the sun to a blazing ring surrounding a sombre disk plunged millions of people in Africa and Asia into an eerie semi-darkness on Friday. The spectacle, visible in a roughly 300-kilometre (185-mile) band running 12900 kilometres (8062 miles) across the globe, set a record for the longest annular eclipse that will remain unbeaten for more than a thousand years. An annular eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun but does not completely obscure it, thus leaving a ring -- an annulus -- of sunlight flaring around the lunar disk. The Moon's shadow first struck the southwestern tip of Chad and western Central African Republic at 0514 GMT and then reached Uganda, Kenya, and Somalia before racing across India, Bangladesh, Myanmar and China. Local media in the affected areas issued warnings about the dangers of looking directly at the sun, but fascinated onlookers thronged streets to witness the celestial phenomenon. "It's getting interesting. Birds are singing. It's actually getting cold here," said John Saitega, a 34-year-old father of six in Olte Tefi, 50 kilometres (30 miles) south of Nairobi. In India, where the eclipse was visible from the southern-most tip, astronomers and curious spectators watched in awe, using sunglasses and even ultra-dark welding masks as day turned into darkness. There were cheers and applause in the city of Bangalore when clouds cleared just in time to show the Moon glide into position to cover ...

The sun lit up the Duat, but no-one sailed. Above the horizon, into space between the Duat and Akhet the sky, life dwelled. The sun was believed to be capable of life before it's birth. On course toward the Earth to be born in the universe. Went away to the sky. Way up high. Traveling through cosmic strings to get ahead. The daily solar cycle was the triumph of life over death. The Duat was believed to exist under the Earth. Hollowed out, the sun grants rebirth. Perception and stardust memories transplanted in the heart. When the sun rises, a new spiritual cosmic journey starts. en.wikipedia.org www.eclipse-chasers.com

The July 21, 2009 total eclipse of the Sun, as seen from the bow of the ship, aboard the m/s Paul Gauguin, at sea in the Northern Cook Islands in the South Pacific. This location placed us near the end of the path with the Sun 7° above the horizon in the early evening about to set. This is real-time, not time-lapse, shot originally in 1080p HD video with a Canon 5dmkii camera and 16-35mm lens at 35mm moderate wide-angle setting. Notice Mercury above the Sun. And the brightening of the horizon below the Sun as the far edge of the lunar shadow approaches us and rises to meet the Sun as totality ends with a diamond ring. This movie takes us from just past mid-totality, through "third contact," to into the partial phases and sounds of celebrating eclipse chasers. Note that for us on this side of the dateline, the eclipse was on July 21, not July 22 as it will be officially listed and as it was for people in China, the most popular location for viewing this eclipse.

The total solar eclipse of March 7, 1970 as seen and photographed from Cape Charles AFS, VA. Cape Charles also happens to be 'ground zero' of the largest impact crater in the United States. en.wikipedia.org July's total solar eclipse brought back memories of my drive from Silver Spring, MD to Cape Charles, VA to see and hopefully photograph the March 7, 1970 solar eclipse. From the Wash., DC area the eclipse was 95% total. The weather was perfect. Not a cloud in the sky. First contact was at 12:19 pm local time. An exposure was taken approx. every 5 min., ending at last contact. The eclipse was photographed on three frames, 31 images, and covered 2 hrs., 32 min. Before the eclipse there was a slight breeze, and bird sounds in the air. At totality there was a noticeable drop in temperature, total silence, and complete stillness of the air. The sky had taken on a purple hue, and the Moon's disk had a grayish cast. The solar corona appeared silverish, and quite spectacular. At the conclusion of the eclipse, as if on cue, a curtain of clouds started to march across the sky. If one has the chance, a total eclipse of the sun is an awesome spectacle. An experience you will never forget. It's easy to understand why some people become eclipse chasers, and in times past, maybe even still, some become fearful. The next total solar eclipse visible from the United States will be on Aug. 21, 2017.

The Total Solar Eclipsed 22 - 7 - 2009 Dishui Lake - Shanghai - China. To all eclipse chasers everywhere on Earth! Despite cloud, one a half minute of totality captured with the video camera this year. A really glorious chromosphere and an amazing second diamond ring that I feel so lucky being there! After four minutes of totality I realized that the exposure settings on the camera were totally wrong to capture the corona through clouds! I replaced this lost time with the best shots of my friends during totality. Hope clear skies next time!
