This insightful portrait of French painter Edouart Manet (K100656) is available as part of a series of over 40 documentaries on art and fashion icons from Arthaus DVD. Manet was a flâneur in 19th-century Paris. At ease among the grande bourgeoisie, a friend of Zola and Baudelaire, his interest turned gradually from history painting to scenes of city life. All his life he longed to be recognised, but works like Luncheon on the Grass and Olympia gave rise only to scandal. Moreover, his provocative snapshots of everyday life struck the viewer as only half-finished a quality appealing to the artists later called Impressionists. The film tells of this eventful period and of the role played in it by Manet, who paved the way for modern art.

There is a group of Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts alumni who have reconnected through Facebook. Recently, we have begun to meet occasionally offline. A little while back, we met for dinner at the studio of an artist named Dick Ranck. Dick's wife Brooke cooked up a batch of incredibly delicious lasagna, and there was more than enough alcohol for those of us who still haven't managed to quit drinking. One of our friends, the painter Fred Danziger, could not be with us that night, but on May 6th, he wrote to us on Facebook: " Whoever attends, I implore you to reconstruct the Manet painting with live models and post for our group." He was referring, of course, to the legendary party painting, Dejeuner sur l'Herbe or Luncheon on the Grass that caused a sensation when he exhibited it in the Salon des Refuses in Paris in 1863.

The Norton Simon Foundation. During the nineteenth century, peasants and other unfortunate individuals became popular subjects in art and literature, a reflection of the prevailing belief that poverty was associated with wisdom. The Ragpicker is the largest of a group of paintings inspired by the Spanish artist Diego Velazquezs Philosopher series of monumental, single figures of impoverished men set against undefined backgrounds.
