I hope the pain in this poem is old fashioned and long gone. That in our new emancipated age this poem no longer resonates. This is about growing up an obvious effeminate in a reaaly hard area. Its about being weak and lost. It is also about strength and power. The power of the effeminate to survive the brutality and violence of his upbringing. While this might not be the most popular opinion within the gay community [I'm more like the outskirts, anyway] it's always helpful to take a good long look within. The way I see it, the gay liberation/equality movement has two big problems. One is confusing and mixing Sexual Orientation and Gender Orientation. They're apples and oranges. Another is over-emphasising and blowing up the minority Transvestism, Hyper-Effeminacy, and Promiscuity in the fringe of the "gay culture". The last three, very typical in PRIDE parades, is unfortunately what many people think when they hear the word "gay" or "homosexual". A big obstacle in showing heterosexuals that gay people are normal are those three. Transvestism [without any sort of moral judgement on my part] has nothing to do with sexuality, and yet it's lumped in with being gay--unwanted baggage. Hyper-effeminacy isn't that some men are effeminate, but rather that some men choose to adopt affectations that they didn't have before when they "come out'. And although I hear countless excuses as to why gay people are "naturally" more promiscuous, I don't buy it. Men may have a higher sex drive, but it doesn't mean that we need to be fucking everything that moves. Unless we disassociate Sexual Orientation with Gender Orientation, and distance ourselves from the "gay culture fringe", we will never be given credence or a real dialogue with the straight community. Think about it.
