Can dancing the Tango actually improve mobility, balance and overall wellness in senior patients suffering from limited or declining eye sight? A study, being led by Atlanta Veterans Affairs researcher Madeleine Hackney, PhD, who also happens to have extensive professional experience in ballroom dance, jazz, theater dance, and ballet, seeks to determine if seniors involved in group-based partner tango dance can improve in functional mobility, balance, and quality of life. Effects of the dance classes, which are being held at Wesley Woods Towers of the Wesley Woods Health Center of Emory University, are being evaluated in each participant, to assess if there are benefits such as improved mobility, balance, endurance and quality of life. Upon completion of the dance program, specific tests that measure these aspects of physical and emotional well being will again be administered and may serve as quantitative evidence of the intervention's efficacy, according to Hackney. Sign-Up Information Those interested in participated can call Madeleine Hackney at 404-321-6111, ext. 5006. Participants must be adults over 50 with low vision. They are additional screening criteria and pre-testing is required. Rare Day In Chicago, 80 year old homer kills home invasion suspect! www.crimefilenews.com Chicago, IL—An unidentified East Garfield Park elderly couple were awakened by an armed yet to be unidentified home invader at 5:20 AM. The 80 year-old unidentified male homeowner, apparently dared possess a handgun banned in the Windy City for 30 years. That gun of his became a lifesaver as he was able to stop the crime by killing the offender in what appears to be a Justifiable Homicide. The Chicago police news affairs section had nothing to say beyond that the shooting was under investigation and arrests have not been made. They plan to provide an update sometime this evening. The timing of this shooting coincides with the United States Supreme Courts expected decision on the controversial gun ban. Legal experts have predicted that McDonald vs. City of Chicago would strike down the gun ban before the courts summer recess. Critics like Crimefile News have long ridiculed the law as un-Constitutional and ineffective. The law only impacts the law-abiding citizens of Chicago. Chicago police superintendent Jody J-Fled Weis recently said the police are powerless and cannot control crime that happens inside homes. Apparently this is just another inside Crime where the public is on their own. The big questions here are, will they arrest the old couple and hold a Show Trial so other Chicagoans that crime victims that fight back can expect punishment along with a criminal record.

Bioethicist Arthur Caplan argues that spending money on elderly invalids diverts funds from other important areas, while attorney Ken Connor contends that rationing care devalues human life. ----- Rising budget deficits have become a principal concern of the American people in recent months, and are already a cause célèbre for politicians in both parties ahead of this year's midterm elections. In this candid video, Massachusetts State Senator Pat Jehlen talks about elderly driving issues in Massachusetts. While discussing the topic, she admits that she used to renew her father's driver's license online for him, even though he was an impaired driver who would often "get lost". This is illegal. She also states that she does not support road tests for elderly drivers, but prefers to give them vision tests, which are less expensive and, according to her, equally effective.

mediamatters.org Following false accusations that Democrats' health care reform legislation would institute "death panels" for the elderly, H. James Towey claimed in a Wall Street Journal op-ed that the Obama administration revived a Veterans Health Administration (VHA) booklet on advanced planning directives that would "steer vulnerable individuals to conclude for themselves that life is not worth living," calling the booklet a "death book." As with the death panel smear, conservative media -- particularly Fox News -- have promoted Towey's false "death book" claim, ignoring facts that undermine Towey's rhetoric.

Police Brutality: On the night of August 1, at a Whitehall, Ohio Walmart, Virginia Dodson could not remember why she was sitting alone in a car. Coming to grips with her enclosed environment, it dawned on her that she did not know how to unbuckle her seat belt either. Panic began to take hold. Her solution was to scrounge up a steak knife and cut through the straps, eventually finding her way into the confusing world of the parking lot, still wielding the blade. Virginia, an 84-year-old African American, has Alzheimer's disease. Like many other sufferers, the responsibility for her care fell to her adult child. Her daughter, however, was inside the store. It was only a short matter of time before the police were called. As she wandered the parking lot calling her daughter's name, she was approached by a white, female officer who clearly ordered her to drop the weapon. She did not.

'UN responsible' for IDP toilets The Sri Lankan government says that the United Nations should take responsibility for not providing enough toilet facilities for the internally displaced people (IDPs) in Vavuniya camps. The UN has said that only half of the toilets and minimum facilities for bathing are available for IDPs in the camps. However, Resettlement Minister Risath Bathiuddeen told BBC Sandeshaya that the UN was offered government land and UN received international funding to provide adequate facilities. The delay is from their part, the government is not responsible for the dealy, he said. 'Elderly IDPs dying' Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka government says it is not abnormal that some elderly IDPs die while in the camps. Deputy Minister in charge of social services Lionel Premasiri told BBC Sandeshaya that majority among nearly 270000 IDPs are elderly and children. "So it is natural that some elderly people die in the camps," he said. He added that the police have taken over from the military on resettling elderly people. Minister Lionel Premasiri admitted that the conditions in the camps are not ideal. "Of course conditions are not similar to their own homes or hotels but we have provided them with adequate facilities," he said. The minister said the government has to be careful while handing over elderly displaced people to their relatives as there is a risk of them being abused by the relatives. In a report issued on Friday, Human Rights Watch says that a ...

DUBLIN 22 OCT 12:35 While thousands of elderly citizens and others converge on the Irish Parliament, the minister for foreign affairs Ahern faces sharp criticism for the evident 'attacks' on other members of the house. It was revealed by members that 7 of the 14 pages in the minister's Morris Tribunal Report were devoted to attacking the integrity of the members who had acted on information they received from the public domain years previously. The resultant tribunal eventually revealed various aspects of criminal conspiracy and state collusion in fabricated arrests and prosecutions. However, the original concerns brought to parliamentarians were proved to be less-than well founded. That being so, the members of parliament of the day had no option other than to come forward with the information they had received in good faith, especially bearing in mind that the Central-Party government had in-place no processes or procedures to deal with such issues as 'doubts' in the countries police forces, termed "The Guards of Peace", inside the republic. It is important to recall that, until the revelations of the members in question, one of whom since lost their parliamentary seat over the issue, it was never considered by the Central Party authority that any citizen would be placed into the position that they would be compelled to raise any manner of question as to the repute and/or motive(s) of 'any' personal individuals in the employ of the government, especially the police ...

Visit www.byteland.org Take action now!Sign the petition today that all people may appoint their own guardian/conservator at www.thepetitionsite.com Subject: Elderly Women Made Nursing Home Prisoner in Montgomery, Alabama Over $200000.00 has been stolen from my mother in the last three years by the corrupt elder care system in Alabama. The unjust appointment of non-relative lawyers by Judge Reese McKinney Jr. to administrate my dear mother's affairs is like highway robbery! This is a form of exploitation of the elderly and mentally ill! It is an outrageous injustice! It represents total corruption of the Judaical system as it is involved in management of elder care issues. Essentially this amounts to the legal rape of the elderly -- rape of their rights! Rape of their dignity! Rape of their very hearts and soul! Rape of their families and their children! This form of exploitation of the elderly is done to gain power and control of their income, property and estates. Over $200000.00 has been stolen from my own mother the last three years. Oh sure, it may have been all legal, but it was theft none-the-less, because I am the only person my dear mother entrusted to manage her affairs should she become incapacitated. Hence what the Probate Court in Montgomery County, Alabama has done is rape, robbery and theft of property through corruption. Why do we allow our courts, our legal system, to permit this form of rape, of exploitation of the elderly? This demands action to change ...
