MaximsNewsNetwork: 19 April 2010 - UNMIS: Juba, Sudan - As millions of Sudanese await the result of a historic election, hundreds of poll workers work tirelessly late into the night making sure that all ballot papers cast during Sudans first multi-party election in 24 years are counted. Counting of ballot papers began countrywide early on Friday morning (April 16) after a five-day voting process. Sealed ballot boxes which remained guarded at polling stations overnight were opened early morning at various polling centers as staff began the final stages of their work. At Gudella Mango tree polling station in the town of Juba, southern Sudan, staff counted ballot after ballot as observers watched and marked each count. "This counting will take time. It will be different from the voting. We will keep counting until we finish. So we have started at eight thirty and up to now we are still counting the ballot papers," said Felix Alfred Laku, Head Officer at the Gudella Polling Station Polling staff were prepared to work through the night until the last ballot was counted. Security was also deployed to secure all polling stations. "We have police here to secure this polling station from fighting and any external attacks," added Laku. The national elections are part of the bench-marks set when a negotiated peace deal was signed in January 2005 between the Government of Sudan in Khartoum and the Sudan Peoples Liberation Army (SPLA), the two former foes, to end a two-decade war ...
MaximsNewsNetwork: 16 April 2010 - UNMIS: Khartoum, Sudan - Counting of ballot papers has begun countrywide in Sudan after a five-day voting process. Sealed ballot boxes which remained at polling stations overnight were opened early morning at various polling centers as staff began the final stages of their work. Voters in north Sudan cast eight ballots and those in the south 12 ballots - in what has been described as one of the most complex elections in the world. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mohammed Ibrahim Osman, Polling Station Master: The process of counting has just begun; we have started counting the ballot papers for the presidency and the governor elections. We thank God that since the time of registration till now our working is going on well. Iraqi officials are counting votes from Sunday's parliamentary election. Despite a series of attacks that left more than 30 people dead, the vote is being hailed as a general success. VOA's Elizabeth Arrott has more from Baghdad.
In an interview with the House of Commons Speaker John Bercow, he says that local councils should be counting the results of the general election ballots straight away after the ballot closes, and not wait until morning as many local councils want, this will prevent much election fraud. We all know that places that have counts in the morning after the vote have been cast, have results that are not as expected, as the government has a chance to change the votes cast. (Check out the many clips on Ireland and their EUSSR Lisbon Treason Treaty vote as one example). The local councils claim that having a delayed count will save taxpayers money, when in reality all they want is to aid in electoral fraud to keep New Labour in power. Recorded from The Daily Politics, 22 January 2010.
The stage is all set for the counting of votes in the Assembly elections in Maharashtra, Haryana and Arunachal Pradesh.
