Diabetes has now become an epidemic in China, according to a new study, with more people there being affected by the disease than in any other country. The study, published in The New England Journal of Medicine, was carried out by 20 Chinese researchers. It estimates that 92 million people in China have diabetes. In a country with 1.3 billion people, that's almost 10 percent of the adult population. The researchers point out that More troublesome is the finding that the majority of cases of diabetes are undiagnosed. The study was carried out between 2007 and 2008 on a group of more than 46 thousand adults from rural and urban cities. Experts blame the epidemic on the rapid change of lifestyle in China, becoming more sedentary as more rural residents head to cities to find work. The uptake in fast-food eating habits has also contributed to a higher rate of obesity—a leading factor for Type-2 Diabetes.
