I stand 2 eggs on end
Balancing of the Egg
Autumn officially arrived on Wednesday at 10:09 pm in Paducah, KY. While many of you were getting ready for bed, "Science Guy" Jason Lindsey and his son, Ethan put an old saying to the test.
I balance an Egg for Autumn Equinox
Can an egg stand on its end during the fall Equinox?? Wayne says it can
I had to see it myself. I had heard for years that you could balance an egg on a flat surface during the spring and the fall equinox. So here's a short clip of it.
Amity and Delta are in a scientifical mood! Supposedly, you can balance an egg on it's head during equinox. They decided to test that theory. Does it work? Watch to find out and be bored!

A Chinese folk legend may have given rise to the idea that you can only balance a raw egg on its end during the vernal or autumnal equinox. Actually you can balance one on any day of the year. Here's how.
The legend of standing a raw egg on its end on the first day of spring can be attributed to the Chinese. They believed that due to the sun's equidistant position between the poles of the Earth at the time of the equinox, special gravitational forces apply.

They say an egg can balance upright on a vernal equinox. So I put it to the test.....
An equinox occurs twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth's axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the Sun, the Sun being vertically above a point on the Equator. The term equinox can also be used in a broader sense, meaning the date when such a passage happens. The name "equinox" is derived from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night), because around the equinox, the night and day are approximately equally long. It may be better understood to mean that latitudes +L and -L north and south of the equator experience nights of equal length. The word is also used for the same event happening on other planets and in setting up a celestial coordinate system; see equinox (celestial coordinates). At an equinox, the Sun is at one of two opposite points on the celestial sphere where the celestial equator (ie declination 0) and ecliptic intersect. These points of intersection are called equinoctial points: By extension, the term equinox may denote an equinoctial point. The Spring 2010 Spring equinox happened on March 20th 2010, 17:32 in time when a location on the Earth's Equator where the centre of the Sun can be observed to be vertically overhead....and a egg can be stood on end....Or something like that.....

One day a year, on the Vernal Equinox or Spring Equinox you can stand a non-hardboiled egg on it's tip. It's pretty cool because today is that day March 19, 2010. Check it out and try it at home.
I balanced an egg on it's tip on March 16th, before the equinox, just to debunk the myth that the amount of daylight affects the bumps on an eggshell! Heh... Also so many others put the egg on the wide end, but you can balance it on the point (sadly I didn't have any extremely pointy eggs in the carton). No gimmicks or tricks, I didn't even wash off the mineral oil that eggs are coated with, it's all one shot from the time.gov website showing the date, I just sped up the video and had practiced ahead of time to find the egg I could balance quickest for the camera. (This was the third egg I balanced and the second recorded take.) It wouldn't show on video, but you might also be able to pound the table next to the egg to get it to "hop" and land still balanced on it's tip! FYI the myth about balancing on the equinox came from a Life magazine article in 1945. A correspondent shared a Chinese tradition of balancing eggs on the first day of spring, neglecting to pass along that their spring begins about a month after the solstice (aka Lunar New Year)--NOT when the Gregorian calendar starts spring. The equinox falls in the midst of their springtime, about two months after their egg balancing festivities.

(MYFOX NATIONAL) - Tuesday marks the first day of fall, or the autumn equinox. And there will likely be many who will try to balance eggs.

Contraindicating evidence that an egg can only be stood on the day of the vernal equinox (first day of spring when Earth's axis is tilted neither towards or away from Sun). Myth busted. :) www.badastronomy.com Filmed: 5/5/2009 (A non-Equinox day)
At school, my teacher said that on an equinox, an egg would stand straight up. I tried it, and it was true. It was really awesome. Just watch. :)
Around 11pm on the 2009 vernal equinox - while everyone else was outside partying - I sat in Jef Palm's kitchen balancing raw chicken eggs on end for the camera. They say this is easiest to do on the equinox and this year it seemed especially so. Enjoy!
Here is a super amazing egg trick. you can only do this on the spring and winter equinox but I don't know why. If somebody knows, then please comment.
I guess mom was right!
We decided to put the myth to the test! We all were able to balance several eggs on their end! Some were even balanced on the small end of the egg.
The only day of the year you can balance an egg on it's end. We did it.
Egg is able to balance extactly at the equinox, 7:44 am March 20,2009.

Did you know you can balance an egg on the spring and fall equinox? Here's proof!
Spring Solstice Egg Standing Up! I got this egg to stand up for over an hour during the Spring Equinox this morning.
The Vernal Equinox!! Grab some eggs, stand them on end, get a pic or vid and attach it to mine. March 20, 2009, at precisely 7:44 AM EDT., the earth is said to be in perfect balance. It is the only day when an egg will balance on it's end. It's is a date that most of us recognize as symbolic of changing seasons. As we welcome spring, people south of the equator are gearing up for the cooler temperatures of autumn. Translated literally, 'equinox' means "equal night." Because the sun is ...
