US Senator Jeff Bingaman highlights some key elements of the short-term unemployment insurance (UI) extension package passed out of the Senate and later signed into law in this week's update. In addition to containing UI extension, the law extends COBRA (health care) coverage and includes a temporary fix for Medicare doctor reimbursement. Bingaman also touches on the Keep Our Educators Working Act and the Taxpayers Bill of Rights, two pieces of legislation he co-sponsored and introduced this week, which aim to maintain public school instruction and protect taxpayers.
Ways and Means Committee Chairman Sander Levin (D-MI) speaks to the House of Representatives on the need to pass HR 4851 the Continuing Extension Act of 2010. The Bill would extend unemployment insurance benefits and COBRA assistance, among other provisions.

UNEMPLOYMENT EXTENSIONS, UNEMPLOYMENT TALK, THOUGHTS ON UNEMPLOYMENT Washington abandoned millions of long term unemployed by failing to include any help in their "so called" unemployment extension in HR 4213 even though the Senate sold this in the media as "extending vital emergency benefits through the end of this year". Truth is they lied. ENOUGH of the little 6 week extensions for only a few states. The economy will not be fixed in 6 weeks. The long term unemployed in all 50 states need Congress to extend the weekly benefits through the end of 2010 and hopefully do it before their Spring Vacation. We cannot wait.

US Senator Jeff Bingaman highlights some components of legislation passed by the Senate this week that contains, among other things, a one-year extension of unemployment insurance benefits and COBRA (health care). This help New Mexicans struggling to find work in this difficult economy. Bingaman also speaks of his appointment to the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC), where he will have the opportunity to advocate for New Mexicos defense and defense-related activities. Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay that Sen. Jim Bunning was brave for blocking an extension in unemployment benefits. DeLay subscribes to the notion that people only try to find jobs when their benefits run out. There is an argument to be made that these extensions, the unemployment benefits keeps people from going and finding jobs. In fact there are some studies that have been done that show people stay on unemployment compensation and they dont look for a job until two or three weeks before they know the benefits are going to run out, DeLay told CNNs Candy Crowley Sunday. People are unemployed because they want to be? asked Crowley. Well, it is the truth. and people in the real world know it, said DeLay.

Senate Democrats joined Donna Norton of MomsRising at a press conference last week to discuss how tax relief and safety net programs within the Senate jobs bill will assist American workers, states and businesses. This bipartisan bill, the American Workers, State and Business Relief Act, will extend long-term assistance to unemployed workers, provide additional funding to protect Medicaid through FMAP, help states through critical disaster relief and extend tax relief to individuals and businesses. As mothers, were used to rolling up our sleeves and solving problems. But what we saw on Capitol Hill this week was dysfunction that caused, rather than solved, problems," said Donna Norton. "We received many letters from our members asking how a simple extension of unemployment and health insurance for families in trouble became a political football. Americas moms are asking lawmakers to extend these vital programs through the end of the year. Every week of delay means that 200000 more workers lose their benefits.
Democrat Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said the Congress under Democrat leadership will be the most ethical Congress. Perhaps Madame Speaker should have informed Democrat Representative from New York City, Charles Rangel of that. Democrat Rangel is chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, the committee that writes the nations tax code. Democrat Rangel is under investigation for ethics violations for not reporting on his taxes earned income from rental property. When Democrat Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi was asked about Democrat Rangel, she saw no trouble with his position or accusations as it did not involve the nation's security. Meaning to Democrats is okay as long as it does not involve the nation's security or Republicans. Democrat Rangel resigned his chairmanship temporarily. This was done to defuse the criticism when in essence he will be able to take that position back if he so desires. President Barack Obama (Democrat) and Senate Democrats advocate the implementation of pay go or pay as you go. Meaning no legislation to be passed which would result in deficit spending. In the Senate recently had a thirty extension on extending unemployment benefits held up by Republican Senator Jim Bunning from Kentucky. His objection to the bill was pay-go was being ignored and the legislation did not provide for its funding. The Democrats were furious, while his fellow Republicans were basically silent. The legislation eventually passed. Recently Democrats in a ...

US Senator Jeff Bingaman focuses on two pieces of Senate business in this weeks update: unemployment insurance extension and health insurance reform. The Senate passed a 30-day, short-term extension of unemployment benefits and COBRA (optional extension of previously provided group health care benefits for workers who have lost jobs) and is now working on a long-term extension to help those impacted by unemployment in this difficult economy. Some Americans lost these benefits last Sunday because the Senate was unable to vote for passage, held up by a one-man-filibuster by the junior Republican Senator from Kentucky. Bingaman also highlights the push for health insurance reform after President Obamas Wednesday speech. The bill referenced by the president and being debated by the House (and all across the country) has already been passed by a 60-vote supermajority in the Senate. Bingaman outlines the next steps in health care reform.
