During the Monday, Sepetember 7, 2009 Miami vs. Florida State football game, fans took part of a special military tribute that is rarely executed over an athletic venue. Lt. Commander Scott Speicher was a Florida State alumnus and the first American casualty of the Gulf War when the F/A-18C Hornet strike fighter he piloted was shot down during the night of January 16, 1991. Speicher, who was promoted to Captain while in missing status, flew with the VFA-81 squadron which was based at Cecil Field in Jacksonville, Florida but now operates from Naval Air Station Oceana in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Four F/A-18 Super Hornet aircraft from his squadron flew over Doak Campbell Stadium following the national anthem and then executed the Missing Man Formation in his honor.
