February 1, 2007 Speaker: Edward Kaplan, William N. and Marie A. Beach Professor of Management Sciences, Yale School of Management; Professor of Public Health, Yale School of Medicine; and Professor of Engineering, Yale Faculty of Engineering Presented by: The Institute for Global Security Law & Policy Summary: The Distinguished Lecture in Global Security Law & Policy Suicide bombings targeting Israeli civilians were once the favored tactic of Palestinian terrorists. Israeli deaths from suicide bombings peaked in the spring of 2002, but Israeli countermeasures dramatically lowered the number of successful suicide bombings since then. This talk will present an evaluation of the impact of various countermeasures on suicide bombing rates with an eye towards understanding the decline in successful suicide bombings in Israel. An elected member of both the National Academy of Engineering (2003) and the Institute of Medicine (2004), Professor Kaplan is an expert in operations research, mathematical modeling and statistics who studies problems in public policy and management. His recent research has focused on counterterrorism topics such as the tactical prevention of suicide bombings, bioterrorism preparedness, and response logistics in the event of a smallpox or anthrax attack. These studies have influenced national and international bioterrorism policy, and his work on smallpox was awarded the 2003 Koopman Prize of the INFORMS Military Applications Society.

Sept. 21, 2009: Annenberg Research Seminar: Paul Leonardi, Northwestern University Join students and faculty for a presentation by Paul Leonardi, assistant professor in the Department of Communication Studies, Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences and Management and Organizations at Northwestern University. His topic: Turning technology into a resource for structuring: A comparative study of materiality and network change. From Dr. Leonardi: In this paper, I present longitudinal data on the use of simulation software in two engineering groups at a US automaker showed that the technology was used by engineers for more than three months as a resource for accomplishing various tasks; though not used as a resource for structuring. Initially, divergent uses of the technologies features precluded users in both groups from structuring their consultation networks differently. Eventually, engineers in one of the groups converged on the use of a common set of features and collectively altered the structuring of their networks. I discuss implications for theory and research on technology use and organizational change.

Innovation and improvisation enable Dr. Beth McMillan to engage her students every day in geology classes. The associate professor works to ensure her students receive not only the necessary lessons in earth science, but learn how to apply them to everyday life. This approach ensures that Dr. McMillan's students bring marketable skills to job interviews -- no matter if their career paths include geology or not. One focus area for her classes includes using geographic information systems (GIS) to conduct research, and she worked to institute a GIS certificate program for students and central Arkansas professionals. "GIS ties information to location," Dr. McMillan said. "I've became interested in the technology as an undergraduate and have been teaching it as long as I've been at UALR. Every time I teach the class, I learn something new. We can use GIS to figure out business locations, habitats, and demographic studies. It's truly a marketable skill that gets our students jobs." In working to set an example for her students, Dr. McMillan took on a mammoth challenge in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. First responders to the scene had no useful maps to locate homes, businesses, and victims, so she answered the call for those who had GIS skills and were "used to roughing it." Her maps were used by Federal and Mississippi Emergency Management Agencies, the National Guard, the Army Corps of Engineers, and others who needed accurate information quickly. While her work was ...
