When his father returned home from serving in World War II, the family moved to Oklahoma before settling in Stockholm, Texas. At the age of 12, Scaggs already had an interest in the music crackling from the car's AM radio. Listening in rapture to T-BoneWalker, Ray Charles, Jimmy Reed and other legends of the era, he knew that this is what he wanted to do.
