"Greensleeves" (Anon.) and "Fantasia" (Munday) are two examples of Virginal Music that Silvano Giuseppe Bernasconi plays before his composition *voce" from the fourth CD titled "NEW MUSIC FOR VIRGINAL"recording a Ruckers reconstruction of Carlo Mascheroni. Respecting the ornaments (according the must common use indicated by Dannreuther in his "Primer of Ornamentation") after the indefatigable researcher of English Renaissance Music, Arnold Dolmetsch, dynamic Swiss musician and his first acquitance with the great corpus of FIttzwilliam Virginal Book (collection bought by Lord Fittzwilliam in 1783) and Nevill commonplace Book (dedicated by W. Byrd to: "My Ladye Nevells - Booke of Virginal Music"), the historical PRAXIS for the OFFICIVM MVSICVM, becames interpretation during a master class of C. Hogwood. In this video, after a reproduction from "The Music Lesson" of Jan Vermeer, ONDA PRODUCTION proposes three virtual details from a picture of George Gower, representing Elizabeth I governing her World in Faire Wether and Thunder (see the alternate moments in "Fantasia" of John Munday). Queen Elizabeth I, loved the Virginal: the history relates that in 1502, for a Royal Party at West-Minster Hall's, twelve jung girls were playing their Virginals for Her Majesty. Finally, Sivano G. Bernasconi with his round painting "diafonìa con suoni di pace" for "voce" seems to suggest this epitaph engraved in Norwich's Cathedral: "For Descant most, for Voluntary all He past, on Organ, Song ...

From Second Service & Consort Anthems, William Byrd(1540-1623) Stefan Roberts, treble; Rogers Covey-Crump, tenor; dir.: Bill Ives A few other compositions by Byrd should probably be assigned to his teenage years. Apart from his contribution to In exitu Israel (Similes illis fiant a4), these include his setting of the Easter responsory Christus resurgens (a4) which was not published until 1605, but which as another Sarum liturgical unit could also have been composed during Mary's reign. Some of the hymns and antiphons for keyboard and for consort may also date from this period, though it is also possible that the consort pieces may have been composed in Lincoln for the musical training of choirboys. Byrd's first known professional employment was an organist and choirmaster of Lincoln Cathedral, a post which he held from 25 March 1563. Residing at 6 Minster Yard Lincoln, he remained in post until 1572. His period at Lincoln was not entirely trouble-free, for on 19 November 1569 the Dean and Chapter cited him for certain matters alleged against him as the result of which his salary was suspended. Since Puritanism was influential at Lincoln, it is possible that the allegations were connected with over-elaborate choral polyphony or organ playing. A second directive dated 29 November issued detailed instructions regarding Byrd's use of the organ in the liturgy. On 14 September 1568 Byrd married Julian Birley, a long-lasting and fruitful union which produced at least seven ...
William Byrd "First Pavan and Galliard" Glenn Gould: Piano Photos: Winter Scenes around the Medway River near Rochester, England. Photos taken by Frank, Belgium - William Byrd William Byrd (1540 or late 1539- 4 July 1623) was an English composer of the Renaissance. He cultivated many of the forms current in England at the time, including various types of sacred and secular polyphony, keyboard (the so-called virginalist school) and consort music. The greatest English composer of his generation, comparable in stature to his most distinguished continental contemporaries, William Byrd was a versatile composer. Although remaining a Catholic, loyalty that cost him considerable trouble in times of persecution in England, he served as a member of the Chapel Royal, providing music for the liturgy of the Church of England and, on a more private scale, for his fellow-Catholics. Church Music Byrd's compositions for the church may be separated into those for the Catholic liturgy and those designed for the officially recognised Church of England. The first category includes settings of the Mass for three, four and five voices, and a large quantity of other works for the various seasons of the church year. For the Church of England Byrd wrote a Great Service and three other service settings, using the texts of the Anglican liturgy. In addition to these compositions there are a number of anthems and psalm-settings, and consort songs with sacred texts of one sort or another. Vocal Music ...
An In Nomine by William Byrd. Score available at: serpentpublications.org I Better quote the Wiki article, to explain this genre: Wiki (engl.): "In Nomine is a title given to a large number of pieces of English polyphonic, predominantly instrumental music, first composed during the 16th century. This "most conspicuous single form in the early development of English consort music" (Edwards 2001) originated in the early 16th century from a six-voice mass composed before 1530 by John Taverner on the plainchant Gloria Tibi Trinitas. In the Benedictus section of this mass, the Latin phrase "in nomine Domini" was sung in a reduced, four-part counterpoint, with the plainchant melody in the mean (alto part). At an early point, this attractive passage became popular as a short instrumental piece, though there is no evidence that Taverner himself was responsible for any of these arrangements (Bowers, Doe, and Benham 2001). Over the next 150 years, English composers worked this melody into "In Nomine" pieces of ever greater stylistic range. In Nomines are typically consort pieces for four or five instruments, especially consorts of viols. One instrument plays the theme through as a cantus firmus with each note lasting one or even two measures; usually this is the second part from the top. The other parts play more complex lines, often in imitative counterpoint. Usually they take up several new motifs in turn, using each one as a point of imitation. However, there are In Nomines ...

Orlando Gibbons (1583 - 1625) belongs to the generation of English composers that followed that of William Byrd, forty years his senior, who had died in 1623. He was a chorister at King's College, Cambridge, where his elder brother was Master of the Choristers, and later became a gentleman of the Chapel Royal, which he served as an organist and to which he later added the position of organist at Westminster Abbey. He wrote music for the Church of England, madrigals, consort music and keyboard works.
William Byrd (1540 - 1623) was the greatest English composer of his generation, comparable in stature to his most distinguished continental contemporaries. Byrd was well known as a keyboard-player. He wrote a wealth of music for the virginals, Fantasias, Pavans and Galliards, the fashionable paired dances of the time, and song variations.

'Te Deum Laudamus', Orlando Gibbons(1583-1625) Orlando Gibbons was one of the most important English composers from the early seventeenth century, with only William Byrd eclipsing him in rank. His church music, exclusively written for the English Church, is among the most popular and enduring in his oeuvre. Notable in this realm are his polyphonic anthems, O clap your hands, Hosanna, and Lift up your head. His two Services are also of great significance: the Short Service is polyphonic and the Second Service is a verse work with organ accompaniment. In the keyboard realm, several of his compositions have been widely declared of such masterful quality as to be unsurpassed by anything until the era of Bach. The Fantasia of Four Parts, from the Parthenia collection, is one such example. His fairly substantial output for keyboard includes many corantos, galliards, pavans, and fantasies. His First Set of Madrigals and Mottets demonstrate his considerable talents in the realm of secular music. Orlando Gibbons was born in Oxford, probably no more than a week before Christmas, as his baptism took place on December 24, in St. Martin's Church, Oxford. With older siblings who were accomplished musicians, the young Orlando was raised in a musical environment strongly conducive to his burgeoning talents. It is likely that his first music training came from them, perhaps mostly from his brother Edward. On February 14, 1596, Orlando became a member of the King's College Choir at ...

This is again a "remake" of a former video. I recorded it again, because I didn't like the sound of the first. Sometimes it is not easy to do that with a video which is quite appreciated and favoured a few times, but I hope you will like the replacement too. I think that is a big advantage of these videos: to be able to delete, or replace something you once recorded. (ernst stolz on viola da gamba) Jenkins was an English composer, born in Kent, and died at Norfolk. Little is known of his early life. His father was a carpenter who made musical instruments. Jenkins performed the Masque The Triumph of Peace in 1634 at the court of King Charles I. He was employed as music-master to two Royalist families, the Derhams at West Derham and Harmon L'Estrange of Hunstanton. In the 1650s Jenkins became resident music-master of Lord Dudley North. Jenkins wrote more than 70 suites. He was a virtuoso upon the lyra viol and played also lute. After the Restoration he was musician to the Royal Court. Jenkins was a long-active and prolific composer whose many years of life, (from the time from William Byrd to Purcell) Jenkins's music was a bit conservative compared to many of his contemporaries. It is characterised by a sensuous lyricism, highly skilled craftsmanship, and an original usage of tonality and counterpoint.
