Phoenix, AZ - Summer may have just begun, but 2500 volunteers invaded the gymnasium at University Public Schools Phoenix (former Phoenix Preparatory Academy) to help more than 9500 children get ready for the new school year at the annual Back to School Clothing Drive "New Clothes, New Beginnings Distribution Annual Distribution" event. More than $400000 of school clothes and supplies are being distributed to pre-registered K-6 graders during the week of July 12--16. The first bus arrives at 7:45 am each day with the last child departing by 4 pm. The 5000 kids pre-registered to attend receive a full complement of new school clothing, uniforms, and school supplies. Another 4000 children in Bullhead City will receive backpacks filled with school supplies and dental hygiene items through the BHHS Legacy Foundation's "Backpack Buddies" program. The remaining 500 students will receive the same backpacks through their affiliations with six other local nonprofit and community-based organizations. "The children we serve are from families that choose between buying groceries, paying rent, or buying school clothes and supplies," said Karl Gentles, the executive director of the Back to School Clothing Drive. "They certainly can't do all three so our effort hopefully gives them piece of mind about their child's readiness for their first day of school and beyond." Major sponsors of the event include BHHS Legacy Foundation, Western Destinations, The USAA Foundation, City of Phoenix CDBG ...

Jamestown, ND (KCSi-TV News) -- North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem, was in Jamestown, Weds July 14, 2010, introducing the "Prescription Drug Take Back" program. Residents can anonymously dispose unwanted prescription and over the counter drugs in the "Prescription Drug, Take Back" box located at the Dispatch Center downstairs at the Law Enforcement Center, in Jamestown. Stenehjem says, the program is in 15 North Dakota cities and continues to grow across the state stemming from local law enforcement agencies requests. Stenehjem says prescription drug abuse is becoming an epidemic, surpassing methamphetamine use as the state's number one illegal drug problem. He adds, the public is largely unaware of the epidemic, as the drugs my be purchased from such avenues as, fellow students in schools, who, as other may do, obtain the drugs from home medicine cabinets, or purchasing over the internet, or lying to doctor's for prescriptions. Some individuals cause intentional physical injuries to obtain painkillers. 80 percent of local Drug Task Force's investigations involve abuse of prescription medications. He says the state has established a data based with pharmacies, of names of those purchasing certain prescription drugs, to avoid the individuals obtaining more than would normally be needed, over a period of time. Stenehjem points out with flushing, or putting medications in landfills, an environmental hazard, taking the unused portions of prescription or over the ...

REPORTER: Breaking news from Wall Street. Today the chief executives of the six largest Wall Street banks admitted to reaping profits at the expense of higher education institutions from high interest loans, and pledged to end the practice. The move will save schools billions nationally, staving off further layoffs, furloughs, cuts to student services and student fee hikes. Since the financial meltdown that a majority of Americans blame on Wall Street, the Federal Reserve reduced its interest rate for bank borrowing to as low as one half of one percent. Yet the Wall Street firms charged interest rates up to and sometimes exceeding 5 times that when lending to state and local governments and educational institutions, scraping profit off the top for themselves instead of stimulating the economy as they were expected to. This morning, Citigroup CEO Vikram Pandit [VICK-rum PAN-ditt] said, quote: These schools were so strapped for cash they would take any deal they could get. It was working out for us because we could charge them 5 times the interest rate weve been getting money from the federal government for. End quote. Perhaps even worse, banks have kept schools and state and local governments in long-term interest rate swap deals with rates consistently 10 times the current Federal Reserve rate, scraping exorbitant profits off the struggling institutions. Brian Moynihan, President and CEO of Bank of America told reporters, quote: We were making a handsome profit keeping ...
