Ohio Governor Ted Strickland and US Senator Sherrod Brown visited Project HIRE on January 11th, 2010 to discuss the state and federal government's job retraining efforts in Cleveland. Project HIRE, a state recovery initiative created this past spring through American Recovery and Reinvestment Act's Workforce Investment Act funds, helps provide worker retraining programs and connects Ohio job seekers with potential employers. "Ohioans who work for a living have been knocked down by this global recession. That's exactly why we're investing in job training and education--because we know that to rebuild Ohio's economy from the ground up, we need to provide everyday Ohioans with every opportunity to obtain the knowledge and skills they need to find good jobs and sustainable careers," Gov. Strickland said. "Project HIRE is a federal-state partnership that's working." The Cleveland/Cuyahoga County Department of Workforce Development (Employment Connection) has connected 160 workers with job placement, including 39 at the Cleveland Clinic, by utilizing workforce dollars, including federal stimulus and Project HIRE resources. In addition, a new Cleveland company, SP Data, is using workforce funds and Project HIRE for mass recruitment and hiring assistance for hundreds of new jobs. Massachusetts Recovery and Reinvestment Office Director Jeffrey Simon visited GLFHC to examine first hand the progress taking place on the North Site (Park Street) Expansion Project. GLFHC has received nearly $1.5 million in stimulus funding which it is using to expand its current clinical site. The center currently has 14 treatment rooms and the project will enable it to expand to 29 treatment rooms. The stimulus funding also led to an expansion of lab services and a newly launched pharmacy service has already opened as part of this overall expansion.

Congressman Darrell Issa (R-California), with information supplied by Red Mass Group, recently asked Governor Deval Patrick why Massachusetts is wasting $174M in stimulus money. To recap, due to the difference in Federal Prevailing Wage and Massachusetts Prevailing Wage, 17.7% of every construction dollar in Massachusetts is wasted on inflated wages. We at Red Mass Group originally talked about the waste of stimulus money through our own prevailing wage (www.redmassgroup.com here, and followed up www.redmassgroup.com here. We then followed up by (www.redmassgroup.com interviewing David Tuerck of the Beacon Hill Institute. Dr. Tuerck confirmed that our calculation of $174 Million in wasted money was accurate based on the Beacon Hill Institutes calculations. The House Republican leadership tried to force a vote, to exempt stimulus money from the Massachusetts Prevailing wage law on June 11, 2009 and was unsuccessful. Below you will see the exchange between Congressman Issa and Governor Patrick. After that exchange, Governor Patrick needed to be excused to check the facts.
