Florida Language School officials charged with student visa fraud scheme The feds say more than 200 foreigners were able to stay in the US using visas illegally acquired through a small language school. The Florida Language Institute occupies two small rooms in a corner of the second floor of a strip mall near a corner of West Miami-Dade. But federal officials say the intensive English-as-a-second-language courses that the school offered to foreign students were not the only service for sale. On Thursday, the school's owner and director and the office manager faced charges of running a vast student-visa fraud scheme, and the Department of Homeland Security has essentially shut down the school, prohibiting it from accepting any more foreign students. Officials said at least 80 students from multiple countries were also taken into custody and may be deported as a result of the two-year probe. According to federal officials, the women, Lydia Menocal and Ofelia Macia, tricked immigration officials into granting more than 200 student visas to foreign nationals who were not really students. www.miamiherald.com tags 9/11 September 11 Student Visas Terrorism Illegal Aliens Attackers Florida Language Institute Operation Class Dismissed Foreign Nationals Colleges Universities Raid Miami Dade

Renegade filmmaker Georg Koszulinski takes on Florida's history from a decidedly different point of view. Blending archival and original footage, he brings to life a cast of historical characters spanning over 12000 years, from Florida's ancient Indians to the migrant farm workers of the 21st century. Meet Osceola and the Seminoles, who fought alongside escaped slaves in the most costly Indian War in American History. Unmask Florida's Ku Klux Klan and don't forget about Walt Disney and Henry Flagler perhaps the two characters most responsible for the Florida we know today. Think you know Florida? Think again. See Cracker Crazy for an eye-opening experience.

US Congresswoman Corrine Brown gradulates the University of Florida Gatas on their third national tyla, second tyla under Corch Irvin Meyers. This is what she had intended to say: I rise today to congratulate my University of Florida football team for winning their second NCAA BCS Championship bowl game in the last three seasons. Go Gators! I want to congratulate the University of Florida not only for being a great academic school but also one of the best athletic schools in the country. In their 24-14 victory over the Oklahoma Sooners, they displayed great teamwork and sportsmanship while fielding the best defense I've ever seen. They held the highest scoring offense in the country to just 14 points! The Gators proved that the University of Florida's season was no fluke and that the Florida Gators are a championship team that made history. Congratulations to their great players and outstanding coach, Urban Meyer, for coaching a remarkable group of guys! Let's do a quick fact check: The Gators have won their second national championship in the past three years and the third in the school's history. Florida is the fourth school in the modern era to win two outright national titles in a three year period. Florida finished the 2008 season with a 13-1 record, matching the single-season school record for wins. Tim Tebow became the fifth player since 1950 to win a Heisman Trophy and two national championships. The win makes Urban Meyer the fifth active coach with multiple ...

For the perfect place to RV with some history and beaches look no further than St. Augustine Florida. City is the oldest continuously occupied city in the United Sates, and with that fact you are sure to brush up on your history. A perfect way to get a tour of the historic downtown district is on a Red Train tour. In the city you can visit the fabled fountain of youth. While it is not the actual mythical fountain it stands as a tribute to where Ponce de León landed in his quest to eternal youth. Also in St. Augustine are the original Ripleys Believe It Or Not Museum and the old Spanish Quarter where it has set up a living history museum. If you like the beach you can park your RV at the North Beach Camp Resort just five minutes away from downtown St. Augustine. At this campground you can see the sunrise on the Atlantic and the sun set on the Intercostals.

A segment of my grandfather Irwin Weiner (1921-1995)'s 8mm footage of him and his wife departing from their South Florida honeymoon in 1951 in a Lockheed Constellation. This footage was converted to VHS by his son (my Dad) some time around 1986. During that transfer the background music was added. To post this on youtube, I converted it to DVD and afterwards used AVS video tools to crop out this segment of the footage. The footage was taken at the open air boarding area at the old 1928 36th Street Terminal on the north side of present-day Miami International Airport.

Bellamy Bridge is located on private land just outside of Marianna Florida. This iron framed piece of history holds more than rods and bolts...it holds a legend that the locals love to tell. Some say she flees down the red clay road to the old iron bridge; others claim her flaming figure flashes through the mist-shrouded swamps; and still others say she descends from the dark night like a fireball to plunge into the slow-moving Chipola River. But all agree that what they are seeing are apparitions of a Elizabeth Bellamy who burned to death on her wedding night. So is the story true? Is the bridge even haunted? If so, is it Elizabeth or her husband Samuel who just couldn't live without her? Forgotten Coast Paranormal Investigators are determined to find out!
www.sorryiatethebeans.com This video clip of Jim Morrison was discovered among films that WFSU (a PBS station operated by Florida State University) had donated to the state of Florida in 1989. After it was found it was digitally converted and posted to the state's film arching website. The video was found accidentally by Jaime Madden. When he watched the video he said, "Oh my god! This is Jim Morrison!" Finds like these definitely highlight an archivists' duty to pay attention to detail! Before attending UCLA Film School Jim Morrison briefly attended FSU. This video was shot in 1964 while he was enrolled there. About a year later, after he graduated from UCLA, he led a Bohemian lifestyle in nearby Venice Beach, California. That's when he met Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger and John Densmore formed The Doors. About The Film This is a public relations film on Florida State University that, in two brief scenes, features a young Jim Morrison years before his more recognized role as lead singer for The Doors. The film emphasizes the need for more college-educated Floridians to work in the state's rapidly expanding industries. It contains campus, classroom, homecoming parade and football scenes. Produced by Florida State University. (1964 / 16:55; B&W; sound; V-221; CA314) From the State Archives: "This is a public relations film on Florida State University that, in two brief scenes, features a young Jim Morrison years before his more recognized role as lead singer for The Doors ...

News report about Tampa's wrestling heritage
I found this silent clip recently in my parents' home movies. It's from December 1, 1956 at Florida Field in Gainesville. My parents were young Miami alums, graduating a year earlier. For more than a decade their tradition was to take the train to Gainesville to watch this matchup every other year. The 1956 team was Miami's highest finish prior to the 1983 national title squad. Coach Andy Gustafson's team defeated Florida, 20-7, in this game to remain unbeaten at 8-0-1. One week later the Canes apparently suffered a letdown, losing at home to Pittsburgh, 14-7, for the only defeat of the season. They ended up #6 in the final polls. Admittedly the footage isn't always great but this video gives you a feel for the styles and pageantry of the era. Note the long skirts on Miami cheerleaders. Plus the card stunts that were in vogue. Also, anyone familiar with the Gators' home field can see how much it has changed in 51 years. In contrast, the Orange Bowl would look almost identical, then and now. This video features a famous play in Miami football history, a long TD run down the left sideline by the Canes' great fullback Don Bosseler, a member of the College Football Hall of Fame and Miami's Ring of Honor. At the 2:20 mark Bosseler can be seen breaking clear, running toward the corner of the end zone where the Miami section was located. Bosseler is also shown being interviewed briefly after the game ended. He was drafted 9th in the first round by Washington months later, and ...
