Flying Tiger P-40 Tomahawk in the markings of the Flying Tigers American Volunteer group in 1941-1942.
Year of the Tiger Feb 14, 2010 heralds the year of the metal element Tiger, one of the most Aggressive, attractive and powerful in the Chinese zodiac. The metal tiger is never to be challenged, but admired and revered. Famous metal tigers include Steven Segal, Joey Ramone, and Angelica Houston. SBTG Basics special edition "Feline Fury" AF1 and Dunk Hi feature animal camo on the swoosh, metal vent monogram on side wall, and the Chinese "Tiger" character inscribed on the heel in metallic gold. Fire for the feet. SBTG salutes the fighter plane art used by the notoriously successful "Flying Tigers" of 1941: the first American volunteer group in the Chinese Air Force. The Flying Tiger features a freehand-replicated illustration of the namesake 1941 icon, toebox sawtooth nose art, bullet hole print and metal vent monogram on side wall.
Video shot by Hans again of another season`s flying session at the Christie Conservation Area around 1988. This was put on by the Hamilton Flying Tigers, that became a yearly event in the 80`s. Maybe you can spot a familiar face. The Flying Tigers sure sucks now compared to what it used to be.............Jetwaco
This vid was shot by Hans around 1987. It shows our local float fly held by the Hamilton Flying Tigers RC Club at the Christie Conservation Area on Hwy 5 in Flamborough. It starts out showing Peter Baab` sitting on top (!) of his 1/2 scale Aeronca on floats, and then moves on to other local modelers such as Laddie. Always a event filled happening which I hope these two vids revive some old memories..........Jetwaco.

Here is the late Don Scott in 1985 & 88, who was a good friend of mine and my familys. Don was a pioneer modeler, one of the origonal members of the Hamilton Flying Tigers way back when they flew free flight and U-control from the Mt Hope (Hamilton International now) airport`s taxi-way. In this video, Don is wearing his home made "cloud gazer" hat. And with his unmistakeable silloette, he was a regular sight at the HFT field for years. He was also a early SAM member, with a very large collection of vintage model engines that most of us would only dream of. Don was also a early MAAC member, his # being 35L. He would go out of the way to help a friend or fellow modeler, obtaining members butrate dope, alcohol, and nitro by the 5 gallon pail. I am still using small hardware he aquired for the club at a bulk rate discount. In the first clip he describes his Lanzo and engine. For control you see his trusty single stick EK Logictrol. The next short clip is a Sal Tiabi powerhouse with ignition engine. Holding his airplane in the first clip is the late Jim Crawford, another pioneer. In the second, Peter Baab. Don was fun to be with, loved a good joke, and lived for airplanes. He was a great guy and I miss him. Origonol VHS video taken by Charlie Chomas
Background: During the Sino Japanese War, prior to World War Two, the Nationalist Chinese of China were an ally to the United States of America. The Nationalist leader Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek requested retired American Army Air Force officer, Claire L. Chennault to help train the Chinese Air Force. 100 P-40 fighter planes were purchased for the Chinese Air Force. In 1941 112 American aviators volunteered to go to China and formed the American Volunteer Group (AVG), popularly known as the Flying Tigers with their iconic P-40's front painted with shark teeth, on the body painted a flying tiger. These men fought and flew heroically to defend an American ally and after December 7th, 1941, defend their nation, the United States of America. Recently it was reported that the eco-terror group, Sea Shepherd plan to bastardize the logo of the heroic Flying Tigers as a symbol in their harassment of the Japanese whaling fleet. Sea Shepherd is doing dishonor to our brave military of World War Two who fought in the China Burma Theater. How can girly men ever respectfully pretend to be 21st century Flying Tigers? They should be ashamed of themselves for exploiting the heroic and selfless sacrifices made by the Flying Tigers of the last century. - Sea Shepherd Flying Tigers US Army Air Corps General Claire L. Chennault fighter pilot Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek Chinese Air Force President Roosevelt AVG American Volunteer Group Sino Japanese War China Burma Theater World War 2 WW2 ...
Check out Patty Wagstaff fly at the Flying Tigers field in Lake City, SC. Patty was our guest at the Biggest Event of the Year on September 26, 2009. Patty was awesome to see. Classic scene from that classic film!! N324F, a Boeing 707-349C (msn/ln 19354-503), was delivered to Flying Tiger Line on June 21, 1966. Since then, it had the following registries: EI-ASO, VH-EBZ, G-BAWP, 9J-AEC, S2-ACG, and finally PT-TCS, on Trans Brasil Airlines. Sadly, on March 21, 1989, it crashed while making a final approach at São Paulo-Guarulhos Airport. The three occupants of this freight flight, plus 18 people on the ground died. Flying Tigers was the popular name of the 1st American Volunteer Group (AVG) of the Chinese Air Force in 1941-1942. Arguably, the group was a private military contractor, and the volunteers have also been called mercenaries. They were former United States Army (USAAF), Navy (USN), and Marine Corps (USMC) pilots and ground crew, recruited under Presidential sanction and commanded by Claire Lee Chennault. The group consisted of three fighter squadrons with about 20 aircraft each. It trained in Burma before the American entry into World War II with the intention of defending China against Japanese forces.
P-40s from around the US show off their colors! The pink Shark's Mouth P-40 belongs to Mrs. Suzanne delano Parish, a former WASP and president and co-founder of the Kalamazoo Aviation Museum. Desert Pink was an official color but this one is REALLY pink. Note the eyelashes on the Shark face and the Fifinella insignia which is the Women's Airforce Service Pilots (wasps) mascot, designed by Walt Disney.

Theatrical trailer for the 1942 Republic Pictures' wartime classic, FLYING TIGERS, starring John Wayne, John Carroll and Anna Lee. Loosely based on the heroic exploits of The American Volunteer Group organized by Gen. Claire Chennault to fight the Japanese in China prior the US entry in World War II, the film was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Special Effects. Most of the film's superb aerial battles were accomplished with miniatures filmed against natural claoud and rock formations by Republic's ace special effects team, Howard and Theodore Lydecker. Even the full-size P-40 airplanes were made of plywood, since real P-40s were unavailable fort the studo's use.
