First Niagara Financial Group (NASDAQ:FNFG)announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire NewAlliance Bancshares (NYSE:NAL) in a cash and stock deal valued at $1.5 billion or $14.09 per share. The acquisition will provide Buffalo-NY-based First Niagara with a foothold in the New England region. The banks said that the deal represents a 24% premium over NewAlliance's closing price of $11.36 Wednesday. The transaction, once completed, will end up creating one of the top-25 largest US banks, ranked by assets, which will total $29 billion. Details of the transaction dictate that each NewAlliance shareholder will receive 1.10 shares of First Niagara stock, cash, or a combination of the two. The deal is expected to close in the second quarter of next year. SmarTrend alerted subscribers to take profits in First Niagara Financial Group on May 06, 2010 at $13.09, since then the stock fell 7.8%. We are now watching for any positive developments that could result in a new uptrend signal.
