There's a whole lotta hollerin' goin' on every June in Spivey's Corner, North Carolina. That's when this little crossroads is home to the National Hollerin' Contest, where contestants try to impress the judges with both their vocal 'stylings' and their knowledge of the different types of 'hollers'. People here consider hollerin' to be a folk art, a tribute to an era when rural residents had to communicate over long distances with nothing but their voices. This video was shot at the 41st Annual Hollerin' Contest on June 20, 2009.

Flat Forks, Texas lies on US 59, a route that I have traveled many times. I have noticed this place several times before and made a mental note that if I had the time, I would visit and make a video. In January 2005, I got my chance. I parked my truck on the shoulder nearby, and I discovered an eccentric folk artist "living the dream," constructing his own surreal world. I'm very lucky that I was able to make this video, because the Flat Forks Art Show is no longer there. I never found out what happened to the artist and his great unfinished exhibit.

Rasa Sayang is Malaysias folk song too, says Rais KUALA LUMPUR: The call by Indonesian lawmakers for action against Malaysia for using the Rasa Sayang folk song which Indonesia claims to be its traditional song in its Truly Asia tourism campaign is unrealistic, said Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim. The Culture, Arts and Heritage Minister said the issue should not have arisen as the song, like other folk songs such as Jauh Di Mata, Burung Pungguk and Terang Bulan, were songs of the Malay archipelago inherited by the people from their ancestors. I think Indonesia or other parties will not be able to prove who the composer of the song (the Indonesian version being Rasa Sayange) was, he told reporters at the breaking of fast organised by his ministry here on Tuesday. He was commenting on Indonesias House of Representatives member Hakam Naja, from the National Mandate Party, calling on his government to sue Malaysia over the use of Rasa Sayang in its tourism campaign. Chairman of the Golkar Party faction at the House, Priyo Budi Santoso, was also reported to have said the government needed to determine whether Malaysia was using the song without Indonesias permission. Rasa Sayange is believed to have originated from Maluku, Indonesia, where it was sung for generations by people of the island. Malaysia can also say that some songs sung and recorded in Indonesia originated from this country for which it has not received any royalty payment, argued Rais. Hakam also accused Malaysia of ...

Video of Chavittunatakam, a dance-drama popular among the Christians of Kerala. This art form originated among the Latin catholics during the early days of Portuguese occupation. Folk art, a form of creative expression that is distinctively Nova Scotian, often takes its inspiration from the sea. A well-known Canadian, most recognized for his folk art is Reed Timmons. He built a shop by his home in Pleasant Bay and took to whittling whales out of pieces of wood when there was a downturn in the fishing industry, and the rest, as they say, is history. The brilliant colors that are used on the puffins, fish, seagulls and other local critters reflect the array of colorful fishing boats that dock in the harbor near his shop.

People all around the world love Bottle Village and are quite surprised when told of the "local politics" surrounding Bottle Village. How does Grandma Prisbrey's Bottle Village feel about being located in Simi Valley? Like a family skeleton hidden in a closet— Like a family secret swept under a rug— Like the orphaned child of a Victorian nun. Many of the locals don't know it exists, the "Knowsits"(aka Movers & Shakers, PowerPals, etc.) pretend it doesn't exist, some outright hate the place, especially Elton Gallegly, our Congressman who called it an "eyesore"! Shame on him! It's on the National Register of Historic Places! Question: If there was a "National Register" place in your town or city wouldn't you expect it to be taken care of and supported by your friends and neighbors? Your Chamber of Commerce? Your City Council? Your Elected Representatives? National=Federal=Important! It's just plain 'ol Simi Valley PMS— Post-Modern Sub-Urban. (Like in the basement of Global Cultural Awareness!)
