Review of the Opinel number 7, an elegant French knife design that has been around since before the dawn of the 20th century. At about $10 a piece this knife is a bargain.
Unboxing and review of the Spyderco folder designed by three esteemed French knife designers, among them, Fred Perrin, a Martial arts master, former French army commando, and government adviser. They haven't been a knife in my whole collection that I have tried harder to get than the Spyderco Street Beat. Since December last year I have been absolutely and utterly hypnotised by it. At first I wasn't sure it was right so I asked around, Bast2a of course but also US based Spyderco lovers such as JohnWayneColt45. They all told me the same thing, it's a great knife but beware it is on the smaller side. So I watched and watched tons of reviews on the subject and nothing could drive me away from it. Yes I bought several knives before the Street Beat but mainly because of misleading information from retailers or importers over here in Europe. Check this out the UK importer told me in May that he could have one for me on a special order within 2 t o3 weeks. After several chasing sessions having the same answer all the time, I gave up. I finally found a great lady called Charity on a forum that secured my Spyderco business for now. The knife itself is a design from French Knife Maker and martial artist Fred Perrin. It's nice 3" clip point of super VG10 with gorgeous black/green micarta handles. The feel in hand is immediately amazing and very intuitive. I personally believe that this is Perrin's greatest talent when he designs a knife: the ergos are phenomenal. It comes with a Kydex sheath that is very well adjusted. It was not the case on the first models and people complained about the knife rattling in the sheath and the blade being all scratched up by it. Where it ...
Recently I have been very interested in blades made in Europe. Since I have been on YT I have been following French Custom Knife maker Bastinelli-Creations on Bast2a Channel. Now I am looking at a very talented knife designer from Italy. His name is Molletta and he has a thing for designing great knives. I think that it is fair to say that he's got a thing for strong and sturdy knives. He is the designer of LionSteel's Most Innovative Knife of the year 2010 at Blade: the SR1. Molletta is also the designer of the Neoczen knife, a strong fixed blade that follows requirements from a French Knife forum. What I like about his work is that it's being manufactured by LionSteel. Their attention to detail and look for a great finish is second to none. There is no compromise on quality of materials either. Nexus is a brand born in the mind of Italian archaeologists who wanted to have the perfect knife for their travels. It's started with a small utility fixed blade and then the Caio. The Caio is a rather large camp knife. It's made in A2 which is a very strong tool steel quite similar to D2. It is 320mm long with a 190mm blade. The blade thickness is the most insane I have ever seen, 7mm on the blade itself and 7.4mm on the tang. The handle is made of FR5 which is a kind of FRN that is impervious to fire and chemicals, making it strong than G10. It offers a very good amount of grip. I really like the "double jimping" on this design. When handling the knife normally you can rest ...
This particular model of Opinel, the slimline, has a long thin stainless steel blade and a bubinga wood handle. I find it perfect for filleting fish. A great blade to take on a fishing holiday, but it is an evil looking thing so be sure to pack it in your hold luggage, not your pocket! In Britain, the state has effectively criminalised the carrying of knives in public places. this is because some people stab each other. Of course, they ignore the law while honest citizens like me who often have a sharp penknife in their pockets now live in fear of both criminals AND police.
Just a short review of a 18th century French style patch knife. Great little neck knife, great for food prep, skinning, and light camp chores.

Another French knife. This one is very cheap, simple, but effective. Look this knife up on Wikipedia. Laci Szabo used to have a great video up about the Douk Douk, but it was removed. His video inspired me to find a Douk Douk, and szaboinc sells a sheepsfoot version of this knife. Very simple, very rugged, very politically correct.

Perceval makes lovely original knife designs in the typical French style: knives that are good for general use, AND they definitely should look good at the table as well. Here we have a closer look at their chic L10, which features a delightful old-fashioned "Piémontais" one hand-opening system.

The venerable French brand Opinel is mainly popular for their affordable and functional folders. From time to time they also offer limited versions with special handle materials and usually with polished blades as well. Here we have a look at two limited editions: the "Old School", and one in ebony. FYI My other video on Opinels shows more different models and gives more background history.
These are two french knives I got in France which sell for 10 times the price in America. These are great knives.
Thank you very much for this Gift my friend.!
Here we have a closer look at a well-made French companion knife: l' Arconsat by Laforet. It's a neo-regional knife where the cutlers hope to establish their recent knife design as the knife associated with their village (Arconsat in this case). This knife is particularly elegant, a nice alternative to the better known laguioles for example.
There are true classic regional French knives such as the famous Laguiole and Nontron. And in addition these days there are many "new" regional knives, as if every local cutler wants to propose his regional knife. So, yes, it's often a rather commercial affair. Still some of these knives are interesting and pretty: here we have a closer look at neo-regional knives called "Le Camarguais" and "Le Montagnard" and one knife from Breizh Kontell, a cutlery from Brittany.
In this short clip we'll examine the classic Corsican knife which is somewhat similar to the Spanish navaja, and also the better known "Corsican Vendetta". Enjoy !
I now have plenty of info, check this out for a lot of info - The douk-douk is an inexpensive French pocketknife, of simple sheet-metal construction. It has been manufactured by the MC Cognet cutlery firm in Thiers, France, since 1927. Design Origins The external engraving of the douk-douk was created in 1929 for sales to France's colonies on Oceania. The handle depicts a "douk-douk", or Melanesian spirit incarnation. This design was originated by Gaspard Cognet, who chose this emblem from an illustrated dictionary. Later other designs such as the "El Baraka" and "Tiki" were developed for other regional markets, particularly in French Algeria, and even down into Sub-Saharan Africa. Description The douk-douk is a very simple slipjoint knife, having no locking mechanism, but only a very strong backspring to bias it towards opening and closure. It consists of only six parts: A folded sheet-metal handle, which is very slim A carbon steel blade, of a soft and easily-sharpened steel, generally of the "Turkish clip" profile reminiscent of a scimitar. The blade has indentations at the back, and is decorated with acid-engraved arabesques. The blade has no nail-nick, but is easily grasped for opening since it tapers at the spine. A strong backspring Two rivets (one to hold the blade, the other to hold the backspring and bail) A metal bail or lanyard loop The cutlery firm of MC Cognet has continued to build the knife up to the present day, using the same simple methods. Today they ...
The Laguiole knife name is not protected, hence next to the original artisanal French ones, you can find cheap interpretations made in far away. Many of these cheap designs are not really good, but is it possible to find interesting ones that originate outside France? Watch the clip to find out...
