At 3000 metres (nearly 10000 feet) altitude, the air in Gangotri is thin and fine. Day time it was warm, but at night it was a case of huddling under duvets. The terrain reminded me of Scotland (though multiplied by several units), but the territory was as Indian as you could get. Gangotri, being the nearest you can get by road to the mouth of the holy Ganga river, is a major pilgrimage centre for Hindus (the more hardy of whom make the 38km round trek, up a further thousand metres, to the actual source of the Ganga at Gaumuk). Further down the Ganga at Rishikesh, Westerners were getting hassled by the police for swimming in the Ganga (a couple of people drowned there in the 2 months I was there) and one Russian woman got arrested for skinny dipping (I guess she took the sign that said "holy river, no bikinis" too literally). Up here in Gangotri though, the Indian women were getting their tits out all over the place and even stripping naked to dry off after immersing themselves in the freezing Ganga (and it is freezing, total snowmelt!). It was a bit of a shock to see Indian women getting with it up here, considering how prudish and repressed the rest of India is.
