GEMINIDS - December 14 - Enjoy meteors and meteor showers? Here's a holiday Solar System event for nearly everyone! One of the best meteor showers of the year! And since the First Quarter Moon sets an hour or two after "local" midnight, the 2010 Geminids should be a treat. This video, using the free astronomy-simulation software CELESTIA, shows you what to expect. Let us know at www.celestia4all.com how many Geminid meteors you see this year. May all of your voyages be joyous!
Save The Dates and look to the skies the last quarter of this year. October, Orionids Meteor Shower, November, Leonids Meteor Shower and December Geminids Meteor Shower. Also don't miss December 21 - Total Lunar Eclipse
Geminid meteors appear to fall from near the star Castor, one of the "heads" of the constellation Gemini, the twins. The meteors are not actually related to Castor; they are debris from an asteroid called Phaethon. The shower recurs each year when Earth passes through this debris strung along Phaethon's orbit around the Sun.
This video is 1.5 hours of the Geminid meteor shower 12/13/2009 8:30 PM MST compressed into 30 seconds. While the show was actually quite good this video only caught 3 meteors all around the post on the lower left of the frame. Most of the meteors were either too faint for the camera to record or outside the frame. The 1st is at 8 sec. just to the right of the post. The 2nd is at 13 sec. just above the post. And the 3rd is at 21 sec. left of the post. If you blink you will miss them. The most interesting feature in the video is the several airplanes that pass through the frame. It is still an nice view of the stars rolling across the night sky. The constellations Orion (right) and Gemini (center) are clearly visible. One other thing to note is that at the very start you may notice the cactus in the foreground has a short flash of light behind it. This was a result of a car coming up the road toward the camera.
December 2009 a group of amateur Astronomers led by world famous Sheridan Williams FRAS travelled to Libya to observe this meteor shower; this year considered by many likely to be the best so far. This is their story . . . Yes, we saw many meteors - I saw over 256 in 5 hours of observing; experts indicate that this would be about right for the predicted 120+ per hour. BUT! We got only a hand full of meteor photographs.

Time lapse of the Geminid Meteor Shower as seen from Stovepipe Wells, Death Valley, California, 12/13-14/2009. Shot from 6:30 pm to 1:00 am. using a Canon EOS 5D w/17-28 mm f 2.8 lens, iso 6400, 30 sec exposure @ 5 sec intervals. Yes it was cold.
Timelapse video of 2009 Geminid Meteor Shower, shot in Colorado's Rocky Mountains. Several planes are visible, but only one actual meteorite. Stars are much more visible in the HD version. As with most of our clips, this sequence is available for licensing. Find it on Pond5, or write to us directly for a rate card.

This video shows the meteors per hour the ultimate Geminids has been producing. In fact, the peak meteors per hour was near 180, which was 40 more than the predicted 140. Tonight is December 15. This will be your last chance to see spectacular shows of this shower! If your weather has been nasty since it peaked, tonight is your chance if your weather clears! Good luck and happy viewing!

It is Geminids Meteor Shower before dawn the 12th and December 15, 2009.
I set up my D200 to capture one image every 45 seconds. Each image is 30seconds/f2.8@1600. I paused the movie here on the image where I caught the meteor! Enjoy!
Driving to beautiful Tawharanui with Shane and Jenni, laughing about dead animals, because we're mean like that, then scientists talking booze, me and the shark - at that point I wasn't sure but apparently it really was one - and then some serious sunrising!
From John Chumack.... "The 2009 Geminid Meteor Shower is underway! We are now hitting the edge of the debri field from extinct comet Asteroid 3200 Phaethon. I captured 30 early Geminids from 7:00pm until 7:00am, with my All sky video cameras from my backyard observatory in Dayton, Ohio USA." We thank you!!

If you missed the Geminids this year, sit back and watch the show as seen from Bangor, County Down (Use HQ mode) This is just a concatenation of the two other videos. Conditions were less than perfect but this is Northern Ireland in December so it's pretty good considering. It shows all the meteors captured (inc. non-geminids) on two evenings between the 12th and 14th December 2009 from Bangor, County Down, Northern Irieland. There are about 103 meteors in all, 85 are probably Geminids (needs 2-station confirmation) the brightest one is near the end and was at least Mag -6.0 although it's very hard to tell due to the fact it was through cloud. Other images and videos of the Geminids can be found here, www.flickr.com

Sequence of 275 images taken on the night of December 13, 2009 between 9:18PM and 11:40PM CST. Each shot is a 30 second exposure taken with a Canon 40D (modified for astrophotography) and an 8mm lens. Thanks to Steve A. for the loan of the camera and Jay A. for the loan of the lens (my Canon 20Da and 15mm lens was recently stolen!). Several meteors and a few airplanes are visible in the movie.
Youtube's default encoding is a bit brutal, so again, HQ mode is strongly recommended! Even though the evening of the traditional Geminid peak (13/14th Dec) was very cloudy, there were enough breaks and enough Geminids to keep things interesting! Stay tuned till the end for a Magnitude -6.0 and rising Geminid fireball. Graphical plot of captured meteors found here, www.flickr.com Composite image of captured meteors here, www.flickr.com Full motion video of the Geminids from the evening before the traditional peak can be found here, www.youtube.com
Even through the clouds the Geminds put on a good show! The video shows all meteors captured on the evening of the traditional Geminids peak (13/14th Dec) Full motion version also here, www.youtube.com

Dec 12th/13th 2009 - 52 mostly Geminid meteors. Can you spot which ones aren't Geminids? You will see the constellation of Gemini pass through the field, so you will be able to easily spot the non-Geminids! Most of them are fairly faint so it's best to use HQ mode. Composite image here, www.flickr.com The video for the evening of the peak can be found here, www.youtube.com Both videos rolled into one, 7 minutes long, 103 Meteors! www.youtube.com Please note there are a couple of 'cosmic ray' hits rather than meteors that appear near the end of the video.
It was the night before the peak and things were looking very good indeed. Full motion video from the evening of the peak here, www.youtube.com
A meteor is a shooting star (laymans Language), space dust about the size of a grain of sand. The dust hits the earths atmosphere and burns up in a blaze of light. This meteor shower gets the name "Geminids" because it appears to radiate from the constellation Gemini.www.ournewplanets.com

A flurry of Geminids in Dec. 2008 recorded by Nasa's all-sky camera at the Marshall Space Flight Center. In the movie, note the circular halo that forms around the Moon as it arcs across the sky; that is caused by ice crystals in high clouds.
