BIOGRAPHY: Gerry Rafferty born Gerald Rafferty, 16 April 1947, in Paisley is a Scottish singer and songwriter. He is the son of a Scottish mother and an Irish father. In his early years, Gerry Rafferty earned money busking on the London Underground. After working with Billy Connolly in a band called The Humblebums, he recorded a first solo album, Can I Have My Money Back. In 1972, Rafferty and his old school friend Joe Egan formed Stealers Wheel, a group which was beset by legal wranglings, but did have a huge hit "Stuck in the Middle With You" (made famous for a new generation in the movie Reservoir Dogs) and the smaller top 40 hit "Star" ten months later. The duo disbanded in 1975. In 1966 Gerry and Joe had released a single, "Benjamin Day" / "There's Nobody Here" (Columbia 8068), as members of The Fifth Column. In 1978, Gerry Rafferty cut a solo album, City to City, which included the song with which he remains most identified, "Baker Street". The single reached No. 3 in the UK and No. 2 in the US The album sold over 5.5 million copies, toppling the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack in the US on 8 July 1978. Even today, "Baker Street", which features a "glistening" saxophone solo by Raphael Ravenscroft, remains a mainstay of soft-rock radio airplay. Also from City to City, "Home and Dry" managed a #28 spot in the US Top 40 in early 1979. One of the more obscure tracks from that time is "Big Change in the Weather" (the B-side of "Baker Street"). His next album, Night Owl ...

A perfect song, for lovers out there... You know I need your love, You got that hold over me Long as I got your love, You know that I'll never leave When I wanted you to share my life, I had no doubt in my mind And it's been you, woman, right down the line I know how much I lean on you, Only you can see Changes that I've been true, Have left there mark on me You've been as constant as the northern star, The brightest light that shines It's been you, woman, right down the line I just wanna say this is my way Of telling you everything, I could never say before Yeah this is my way of telling you that everyday, I'm loving you so much more Cause you believed in me through my darkest night Put something better inside of me, You brought me into the light Threw away all those crazy dreams, I put them all behind And it was you, woman, right down the line I just wanna say this is my way Of telling you everything, I could never say before Yeah this is my way of telling you that everyday, I'm loving you so much more If I should doubt myself, If I'm losing ground I wont turn to someone else, They'd only let me down When I wanted you to share my life, I had no doubt in my mind And it's been you, woman, right down the line

Winding your way down on Baker Street Light in your head and dead on your feet Well another crazy day, youll drink the night away And forget about everything. This city desert makes you feel so cold Its got so many people but its got no soul And its taken you so long to find out you were wrong When you thought it held everything. You used to think that it was so easy, You used to say that it was so easy But youre tryin, youre tryin now. Another year and then youd be happy Just one more year and then youd be happy But youre cryin, youre cryin now. Way down the street theres a light in his place He opens the door, hes got that look on his face And he asks you where youve been, you tell him who youve seen And you talk about anything. Hes got this dream about buyin some land Hes gonna give up the booze and the one night stands And then hell settle down, in some quiet little town And forget about everything. But you know hell always keep movin You know hes never gonna stop movin Cause hes rollin, hes the rollin stone. And when you wake up its a new morning The sun is shining, its a new morning But youre going, youre going home.

Gerry Rafferty - Night Owl (1979)
From Gerry Rafferty's 1972 studio album, Can I Have My Money Back? I heard this on Democracy Now and it wormed its way into my head. Having a song stuck in somebody's head is a terrible thing, and I couldn't find it on teh YouTubes. So here you go.
"Baker Street" is a song by Gerry Rafferty, first released in 1978 on his album "City to City". The song was named after the famous London street of the same name, this was Rafferty's second solo album. The single reached #3 in the UK and performed even better in the US, where it became a #2 hit, in addition to reaching the top 10 in the Netherlands (#9). It was Rafferty' first release after the legal issues surrounding the formal separation of the band Stealers Wheel in 1975. Rafferty was unable to release any material for three years after the band's break up, while resolving the disputes about the band's remaining contractual recording obligations. City to City is an album by Scottish singer-songwriter Gerry Rafferty. The album was strongly received and went to #1 in the US, going Platinum. By 1988 the album had gone 5 x Platinum. This song has been covered at least 20 times including covers by "Waylon Jennings, Rick Springfield and The Foo Fighters" On at least 4 TV shows including "The Simpson's" and 2 feature films including "Good Will Hunting" The covers by the group "Undercover" reached #2 on the charts in the UK in 1992 and "The Foo Fighters" cover reached #34 in the USA in 1998.

Gerry Rafferty - Right Down The Line
.
I remember the sound of the passing train As it rolled through the night in the pouring rain And the touch of a hand and the way she said 'Goodbye'. And we walked in the sun down the royal mile Saw the light in her eye and the way she smiled And she cried in the night and I heard her say 'Don't go'. What can I do, sweet darlin', I don't want to go away Looking at you sweet darlin', I know I want to stay What can I do, sweet darlin'? In the light of the day I was rolling home I was thinking of you waiting on your own And I wanted to call but then something said 'Oh no'. Yeah but now it's a dream, it's a memory But I'll never forget what you gave to me I was lost and alone but you made me feel ok. What can I do, sweet darlin', I don't want to go away Looking at you sweet darlin', I know I want to stay What can I do, sweet darlin'? I remember the sound of the passing train As it rolled through the night in the pouring rain And the touch of a hand and the way she said 'Goodbye'. I was lost on an endless sea Going down, going down, going down on an endless sea Sail with the wind, you weather the storm You bring it all home, bring it all home, you bring it all home. I was free in the dead of night I want you, I want you, I want you in the dead of night Give me your love, I'll sing you my blues I bring it all home, bring it all home, I bring it all home. I was blind in the light of day I need you, I need you, I need you in the light of day I still won't let go, hang on to this pride I bring it all home, bring it all home, I bring it all home. Gerry Rafferty - Right Down The Line. www.SomeCoolStuff.net
Half Irish, half Scottish, Gerry Rafferty, who, before going under his own name, co-founded Stealers Wheel ("Stuck In The Middle With You"), had bigger hits with "Baker Street" and "Right Down The Line". This one, however, is my personal favorite. From the 1979 album Night Owl. To go along with it, to me, the second prettiest face in the world, Danica McKellar! Yes, she played Winnie Cooper on 'The Wonder Years'.
Have a look at the first shot in the offical Music Video of Gerry Rafferty's great 1978 song - www.youtube.com - and compare it to the opening scene in my clip: Yes, it's the same spot, about 31 years later. I've always adored Raffertys music and happened to live in an apartment nearby in june 2009. So I had plenty of time to stroll around on Baker Street and check out what's left of the city desert or the lad in his place with that look on his face. Since the video would most certainly be removed if I put "Baker Street" as background music, just play the song from your MP3 collection.
