It was only in the late 19th century that it was first officially recorded by scientists, after one leviathan squid washed up on a beach in New Zealand. Related to slugs and snails, this monster from the deep, along with its cousin the colossal squid, is the largest invertebrate in the world. It has never been filmed in its natural habitat hundreds of metres down, but occasionally specimens are brought to the surface by deep-sea trawlers. Joy Reidenberg and Mark Evans fly out to New Zealand to join a team of experts and dissect a rare specimen of a giant squid and a bizarre octopus that inhabits the 'midnight zone' over a kilometre deep, where there is no light at all. The team discover that the giant squid has teeth on its tentacles and tongue, a throat that dives through the middle of its brain, and three hearts that power blue blood through a muscle-filled jet-propulsion cloak. They investigate how octopus and squid are masters of disguise and survive underwater warfare using camouflage, ink jets and spectacular light shows. They piece together the puzzle of how the giant squid hunts, how it jets through the water, how its quick-fire beak pulverises food and why it has such enormous eyes. They also discover the brutal truth about giant squid sex. EPISODE GUIDE ● The ...

Dava Sobel, a writer of popular expositions on scientific topics, has published works such as Longitude: The True Story of a Long Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time; Galileo's Daughter: A Historical Memoir of Science, Faith and Love; ,and The Planets. Her work has also been dramatized for television on the A&E Network. In this program from the NIST Colloquium series, she discusses how navigators and scientist like Galileo and Newton had difficulty keeping track of longitude until an unknown self-educated clockmaker offered timekeeping as the unlikely solution.

We found "Sammy" the salmon shark washed up exhausted on Chesterman Beach in Tofino, BC. Even the surfers couldn't get him out past the pounding tide. So we decided that he would unlikely live, so we picked him up and put him in our trunk and drove 5 minutes over to the inlet side of Tofino, and revived him over by the crab docks. And sure enough, he survived, and made his way back to the ocean. Good Luck Sammy!! October 16th 2009
www.jellyfishart.com Click on link to see more jellyfish aquariums at Jellyfish Art! This is a jelly that I've never seen here off our coast. I may be wrong on the identification but I'm pretty sure that this is a Mauve Stinger also known as simply a Purple Jellyfish (Pelagia noctiluca). If in fact this is noctiluca then it has some very interesting facts behind it. According to a few articles on this animal, this is a bioluminescent species, meaning it is capable of generating light similar to a firefly. These jellies can form large swarms of up to 600 individuals per square meter and in some places it's not uncommon to see these washed up on shore. Here in Southern California I'd guess that it's safe to say that they are fairly uncommon. These are capable of delivering a painful sting so if you see these while out swimming in the water be careful to avoid touching them.
Yeah for all of you locals and tourists there are huge sharks right off the Delaware Beaches.
