Pianist: Glenn Gould (1932 - 1982) Photos: All rights reserved to Life magazine The majority of the photos were taken during the recording sessions for Gould's 1955 debut recording of the Goldbergs. While I realize the "Gouldbergs" are in abundant supply here on YouTube, I felt I would give a rendition of my own. I wanted to do something in tribute of Glenn, and I couldn't come up with a better idea than the Goldbergs. I hope they capture as many new listeners as old, and perhaps make fans for Bach and Gould alike.

Glenn Gould on Sviatoslav Richter, and in particular his interpretation of Schubert. UPDATE re: the voice in this clip -- it turns out that this was taken from a Russian TV program, in which Gould originally spoke in English but was later overdubbed in Russian. The original English audio was lost, and it had to be re-overdubbed in English, using the text of Gould's comments (which is stored at the National Library of Canada). So while the voice is not Gould's, the comments are.
After having made seven films on Glenn Gould, Bruno Monsaingeon signed a masterpiece with this new portrait of the famous Canadian pianist. Bruno Monsaingeon, the person in the world who undoubtedly knows Glenn Gould best started to look for footage that had never been seen before among the many rushes of his own films. Glenn Gould plays the fugue from Bach's Prelude and Fugue in A minor (BWV 895).
Full Art of Piano documentary segment on Glenn Gould. Includes clips from: Bach's Partita No2 in c minor (BWV 826); Bach's Keyboard Concerto No1 in d minor (BWV 1052); and an interview on the roles of the performer, composer, and listener.
Glenn Gould watches, conducts, and discusses the CBC recording of his composition 'So You Want to Write a Fugue' (and fugue writing in general). With Bruno Monsaingeon. The full video of So You Want to Write a Fugue can be found here: www.youtube.com Note that there are many subtle musical references in this piece -- for example, after the "just ignore the rules and try" line, the bass and tenor blatantly do just that by singing in parallel fifths, and after the line "John Sebastian must have been a very personable guy" (and before the "never be clever for the sake of being clever" verse) the string quartet cleverly plays a brief quodlibet of JS Bach melodies.
