Google Tech Talk April 6, 2010 ABSTRACT Presented by Dr Matthew Todd, School of Chemistry, University of Sydney. Open Science: how can we crowdsource chemistry to solve important problems? Science shaped itself in the founding days of learned societies: individuals or teams competed, in secret, with paper-based communication in subscription journals. Why are we all still doing science like this? The internet has had a major impact in our sharing of data by traditional means, but it has not yet radically changed the way we actually perform science. My lab is involved in a new project a government/WHO-funded research project that is completely open, where we are trying to solve a serious problem in public health through basic research in organic chemistry. The project involves a wonder drug used to treat a tropical disease but we need to improve it, and fast: www.nature.com With an eye on the bigger issue, we propose open methods can allow science to happen faster than traditional means, but we do not yet have the tools to make this happen. This talk is about hard science and soft human nature. It is also an appeal for decent tools scientists need to collaborate properly. The over-riding requirement: low barrier to entry.

We have officially kicked it off today! Geoff, (convenient that the two guys behind this are named Jeff & Geoff, eh?), has updated the 'official' blog for the campaign and we have ironed out all the problems regarding PayPal and their donation requirements. Wed simply point and laugh at the mob most of the time, but this isnt the first time weve seen a major blunder from Google. In fact, its the second time in a month that GMail has gone down, calling in to question whether businesses, who rely on bulletproof communication, should start reconsidering GMail, and move back to their own email servers. To parse the problem, we talk to Natali Del Conte from CNET, and Mark Harris, who is a freelance writer for numerous tech publications. Natali brings up that 2009 in general seems like a year where were seeing problems across Google, not simply with GMail. Mark attributes the problems to growing pains, with GMail being one of the most rapidly growing email services to date. After upgrading it downloaded an update for 10.6.1. I had a small problem in which I left the computer unattended for about 30min... just watch! XD I had to cut out a lot of parts cuz of the video's length. Anyway, it's really good, I've been using it now for about 3 days and it's been a lot faster than Leopard, but for some reason it froze a little bit. :S Sometimes it got a little slow the first day, although no problems again so far! ^_^ Anyway, I should be installing Windows 7 Professional Edition and comparing it to Snow Leopard extremely soon! :) I will be intalling it today or tomorow and posting the video as soon as I edit it! ^_^ Maybe I'll edit it in Movie Maker on the newly installed OS.
