My first visit was in May of last year (2008). This was my writing about the first visit: I was going to come straight to Mardin yesterday. But another guest at the Lizbon Konuk Evi started showing me photos he had taken the day before when Aziz had taken him and another guest to an active archaeological dig site, Göbekli Tepe (while I went to Harran). I also noted, this late, that I had fairly recently read about Göbekli in the New York Times (I think) before leaving home, and had made a note of it on my map of Turkey. So, before coming to Mardin I decided to have Aziz run my out to Göbekli. The Australian fellow also decided to go out again. Well, the Wikipedia entry (en.wikipedia.org epe) says, "It is currently considered the oldest known shrine or temple complex in the world, and the planet's oldest known example of monumental architecture." And it is something to see--if you like this stuff. For the dig site is small, and even from outside the fenced-off dig, one is quite close to these fresh discoveries. So one can see the artifacts in situ, I think the term, rather than in a museum. Unfortunately for me (not for the site) the guard would not permit the Aussie fellow, David, and I to enter ...

Teaser of a documentary, made by TRT (Turkish Radio Television Corporation), about the Göbekli Tepe excavation site near Urfa, Turkey. This 11.500 years old site, known as the first polytheistic temple, caused some rewriting in archaeological history after it's discovery and probably witnessed the settling of mankind. The documentary is still in post-production.
We are visiting the Gobekli Tepe archeological site in southeast Turkey between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers - where our understanding of pre-Neolithic hunters and gatherers has been turned on its head by the uncovering of monumental stone circles from 12000 years ago.

www.megalithomania.co.uk - Filmed at the Megalithomania Conference in Glastonbury on 9th May 2010 by Nautilus AV Productions. Description: In southeast Turkey stands the oldest temple in the world. At nearly 12000 years old, Gobekli Tepe is an enigma to archaeology. Consisting of a series of stone circles, made up of T-shaped pillars bearing exquisite carvings of animals, birds, insects and abstract human figures, this ritual complex was constructed at the end of the last Ice Age by faceless individuals, who rose far beyond the conventional understanding of the hunter-gatherers who occupied the Eurasian continent at this time. Why were these amazing stone circles buried overnight, sometime around 10000 year ago? It is an enigma that seems to start in Africa some 17000 years ago, and ends with not only the creation of civilization down in the fertile crescent of Mesopotamia, but also in the sudden emergence of the ancient Egyptian civilization, where the story continues with the discovery in 2008 of a cave underworld beneath the plateau at Giza. Powerful evidence suggests that this underground complex existed ever before even the Pyramid Age, and might well reflect an African origin to the roots of ancient Egyptian religion. It might also hold the key to answering claims that in the vicinity of the Sphinx is a lost Hall of Records. Biog: History and science writer Andrew Collins is a leading expert on Gobekli Tepe, and provides a powerful insight into the strange worlds ...

Gobekli Tepe ( Kurdish: Girê Navokê) is a hilltop sanctuary built on the highest point of an elongated mountain ridge about 15 km northeast of the Kurdish town of Urfa in northern Kurdistan. The site, currently undergoing excavation by German archaeologists, and was erected by hunter-gatherers in the 10th millennium BC (ca 11500 years ago), before the advent of sedentism. . Göbekli Tepe is the oldest human-made place of worship yet discovered. Until excavations began, a complex on this scale was not thought possible for a community so ancient. The oldest occupation layer (stratum III) contains monolithic pillars linked by coarsely built walls to form circular or oval structures. So far, four such buildings, with diameters between 10 and 30m have been uncovered. Geophysical surveys indicate the existence of 16 additional structures.Stratum II, dated to Pre-Pottery Neolithic B (PPNB) (7500 - 6000 BC), has revealed several adjacent rectangular rooms with floors of polished lime, reminiscent of Roman terrazzo floors. The most recent layer consists of sediment deposited as the result of agricultural activity. The monoliths are decorated with carved reliefs of animals and of abstract pictograms. These signs cannot be classed as writing, but may represent commonly understood sacred symbols, as known from Neolithic cave paintings elsewhere. The very carefully carved reliefs depict lions, bulls, boars, foxes, gazelles, asses, snakes and other reptiles, insects, arachnids, and birds ...

Thx for watching this clip. This new updated version contains a few corrections of errors and glitches that were still present during the first video I made about this neolithic structure. And again I just have to apologize for the crappy quality. Guess it'll take a while, till I figured out a resolution and bitrate that actually works. Regarding the Firepit: I have recieved several comments saying there is no evidence whatsoever for a fire pit ever being there. Fair enough critisim, yet I'd like people to note that I am NOT A scientist and this reconstruction is not necessarily an accurate depiction of the site 11.000 years ago. I do not profess to uphold truths here. Yet, the reason why I included the fire pit was because I see the pillars as a sort of maya stella. It is quite probable that rituals where performed here similar to what we know from the aborigenes. They, as well as the mayans used fire as a medium so it is likely that the people of this site used the same medium to tell whatever stories they made up about the critters on the stellas. Regarding the Causeway The causeway in this clip is purely ornamental 'garb', though it is quite possible that such a thing could have existed (kind of hard to work out what's left after 11.000 years!) and that it functioned in a similar fashion as the Nazca lines or the labyriths of northern Europe. Rergarding the Reliefs: The reliefs I created by recoloring pics from the actual site using MicroGraphx Picture Publisher ...
* Notice the sound on the video does appear to be off by just a second or so, but still able to watch easily. I recommend anyone who seems to be interested in this to check out the series on BBC Called The Incredible Human Journey, this was from Part 3 towards the end of the show. The entire series is a very nice example of how Humans left Africa and started to settle around the entire world. Gobekli Tepe is around 10-12k years old. It is one of the Oldest Known man made settlements which appear to have temples and offer Sky Burials. Some of the craftsmanship are just amazing to see coming from a culture which pre-dates Egyptians by over 5k years. The opening music is made by my self, and free to use if you wish, contact me if you wish to obtain any other songs, I have tons that I have made from 1999 to 2001 and will use this music for now on so Youtube can't yank the audio from it since I Own it, and made it. ;)
This is a reconstruction of the meso-/ neolithic temple site of Göbekli Tepe. The site itself consists of several circular temple structures although I chose to do only one. The music I composed with Music Maker 2008. : I designed it with Google Sketch Up. Which is why there are no reliefs on the stone pillars, cause I havent's figured out how to post a pic without it being a continuous pattern (notice the 'Sky' in the back). : And YES. I HAVE noticed that the door is missing in the interrior. This is an unfortunate error.
