Dr. Ratnayake is the author over 100 scientific publications, authoritative review articles, and book chapters. He has made over 120 presentations at national/international scientific meetings. Dr. Ratnayake is considered to be the world authority on the analysis and health effects of trans fats. Dr. Ratnayake's demonstration of exceptionally high levels of trans fat in the Canadian foods and human breast milk led to the mandatory labelling of trans fatty acids in Canada as a means of reducing the levels in foods. Furthermore, his studies helped to confirm the safety of canola oil and contributed to supporting Canada's canola oil and seed exports. Dr. Ratnayake was the very first researcher to discover adverse health effects associated with excessive intakes of plant sterols. This work led Health Canada to make a regulatory decision not to permit addition of plant sterols to margarines and other common foods in Canada. Dr. Ratnayake most notable recognition came in February 2003 when he was awarded the Commemorative Medal of Queen Elizabeth's Golden Jubilee, citing his research on canola oil and trans fats.

Hello Im Nairisha Batada from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada and this is my entry for the who inspires you video essay contest sponsored by Tri-Cyclen and Lo. The person that inspires me is The Aga Khan. He is the founder and chairman of the Aga Khan Development Network. One of the largest private development networks in the world, which work towards social, economic, and cultural development in Asia and Africa. His projects focus on the elimination of global poverty, advancement of the status of women, promotion of Islamic culture, art, architecture, and furthering pluralistic values in society. He inspires me because he is a role model for millions and millions of people out there, he has taught us to build bridges between different communities and to accept diverse cultures, he voices that pluralism is the key to peace and development and that people to understand each other and to se difference as an opportunity rather than a threat. He inspires me to follow my ethics and vales in order to become a better human being and to help not only my community but other communities in this diverse nation. Following his example we have proposed to start a club in our school to raise awareness and funds. We registered 80 students from our school and proposed the club which is in the finalizing process. Recently, I joined the World Partnership Walk teams Portfolio, it is one of the many projects run by the Aga Khan Development Network in order to increase awareness and raise funds to fight global poverty. If I win this contest, a large portion of the money will go towards the world partnership walk so it can contribute to educating and housing people around the world. Later on in my life I aspire to be an integral part of the Aga Khan Development Network and to help out will their goals to annihilate poverty. If you would also like to be a part of the solution to global poverty join us on May 25th at Metro hall for the World Partnership walk. To JOIN us in the solution to global poverty Visit http://www.worldpartnershipwalk.com The Aga Khan Development Network includes the following: Aga Khan University (AKU) University of Central Asia (UCA) Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development (AKFED) Aga Khan Trust for Culture (AKTC) Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS) Aga Khan Education Services (AKES) Aga Khan Planning and Building Services (AKPBS) Aga Khan Agency for Microfinance (AKAM) Aga Khan Award for Architecture (AKAA) Focus Humanitarian Assistance (FOCUS) Recent examples include the massive earthquake in Pakistan (AKDN earthquake response) and South Asian Tsunami. Aga Khan is also the chairman of the Board of Governors of the Institute of Ismaili Studies. Recent projects led by the Aga Khan include Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat Global Centre for Pluralism (GCP) Aga Khan Museum Al-Azhar Park Aga Khan Academies (AKA) Aga Khan has pledged $75 million for the rebuilding of Afghanistan. The pledge was the largest by any single donor and more than many countries.
